Ammanford Police Court Monday, February 17th.-Before Mr. W. Llewelyn, Fair water (in the chair) and Mr. J. Evan Jones, Ammanford. PRIDING ON TRAMS. David Evans and David E. Thomas, two colliers engaged at the Gellyceidrrm Col- liery, were summoned for an offence committed under the Coal Mines Regulation Act, Sec- tion 43, Sub-section 2. Mr. T. M. Evans, M.A., solicitor, Ammanford, appeared for the Company. Neither of the defendants appeared, but had sent a plea of guilty. Mr. E. R. Fisher, manager at the colliery, deposed to the offence being committed cn the 18th January last. It was a very dangerous practice. Fined 10s. each and advocate's fee. VARIATION OF PATERNITY ORDER. The Bench granted, an application for an increase of a paternity order from 3s. 6d. to 5s. weekly. At the same time, the Bench took into consideration the circumstances of the defendant, the Chairman remarking that it was within their power to grant the increase up to 10s. weekly. SCHOOL ATTENDANCE CASES. I David Davies, David C. Davies, Arthur Jones, Thomas Jones, Arthur Morris, Richd. Horner, William Jones, Wm. J. Thomas, Walter Thomas, and Joseph Morgan were all summoned for neglecting to send their chil- dren to school. Evidence was given by the School Attend- ance Officer, Mr. John Bowen. In the case of Arthur Jones, it was stated that defendant was a married man with five children, and in receipt of parish relief. He also was half-blind. In view of these circum- stances, the Bench adjourned the case for a month, and in the meantime the child to be sent regularly to school. Various excuses were brought. forward, and included the inability of the father to provide boots for the child. This case was also ad- journed for a month. The others were fined or ordered to pay costs. NO LIGHTS. I John Harries, Brynmelin, Capel Isaac, Llandilo, was charged with driving a horse and cart without lights. P.C. Higgins proved the offence, and stated that on the 24th ult., at 6.30 p.m., he saw defendant driving a horse and cart on the Glanamman Road, in the parish of Llan- debie. He had no front or rear lights. When asked where his lights were, defendant re- plied: I travel by day and not by night." He (the constable) advised him to get lamps. Later on in the evening a complaint was ie- ceived from a pedestrian of his nearly being run over by defendant near Glanrhyd. Defendant did not appear. Fined lOs. for each offence. EJECTMENT ORDERS. Patrick Lewis applied. for. an ejectment Patr c k is >rder against Joseph Price. Defendant's wife appeared, and said that she had ten children. She had been unable :o find a house, and had even travelled )eyond Llandilo in search of a suitable dwelling. She admitted notices having been served. The applicant stated that defendant had not attempted to look for a house. There were three houses vacant recently in Coro- nation Road, Glanamman. Defendant: Why did you not tell me of them? Applicant: It is no good of me telling you. Defendant: You only carry everything next door. They are like a lot of spies. Adjourned for a month; in the meantime, defendant to find a house. A like application was made by John Evans. of Bronallt, Glanamman, against Arthur Williams, Ceidrim Terrace, Glan- amman. The defendant in tiA case was serving in the Navy. Adjourned for a month.

DISCHARGED SOLDIERS' PROTEST. I At the meeting of the Llandovery War Pensions Committee, held on Friday last, reference was made to the laxity of the County Committee and the Ministry of Pensions in dealing with the claims of soldiers. Mr. R. F. Thomas, the discharged soldiers' representative on that body, said that in one particular instance a case had been in abey- ance for the P<W two months. .4 two mont h s. Mr. Mervyn Peel, the chairman, said that they should send a strongly-worded protest to Carmarthen. He would see the matter through, and that in the meantime he would prepare the grease to rub it in. Mr. Peel's suggestion was- adopted.

Under medical orders, Mr. Towyn Jones, M. P., has to take to his bed and remain there in order to get rid of a severe attack of bron- chitis, from which he has been suffering for the last few weeks. Were it not that he would insist on attending occasionally to his duties at the House and at Downing Street, and to meet friends who have come up to Town on urgent business, he would doubt- less ere now have recovered from the severe attack from which he is slowly recovering.

I Our Poultry Column. Throughoift the whole of the poultry fancy you will hear this variety spoken of as the Rock, but those not so well acquainted with the show side of the industry refer to it as the Plymouth Rock. The breed is American in its origin, and they have more colours than we have here. We have the Barred, Buff, White and Black, while in the States they have also the Columbia and Partridge, both colours of which correspond with the Wyan- dottes of those names. All the Rocks are very hardy, and can be kept in almost any open or bleak situation, while a heavy soil is not so harmful as it would be among some of the light breeds. It is most essential with these, as with all fowls, that the house be kept well aired and perfectly dry, so that the birds may run in comfort, although the out- side ground may not be ideal. Some birds will stand confinement better than others, but the Rock wants a good run, and if a free range, so much the better, for Rocks like a free life and it suits them. For this reason it is the ideal farmer' s fowl where they can have a house in each field, and then given full liberty. When kept like this they can find a portion of tkeir food; and after the corn has been cut they can be put out on the stubble, and not given any food for three or four weeks. Being one of the largest, it is also a big eater, and should be given plenty of food if it is expected to grow well; and a small Rock is not representative of the breed. Where a rich co loured egg is needed this is the ideal fowl to keep, and if there is a desire to darken the egg colour, only the darkest shelled bird should be bred from. No one will recommend the Rock as an layer, and yet the Buffs have done better than most of the heavy breeds in the various laying competitions. The Barred is the most gerierally kept, and is understood by nearly eyery novice, although they might not know the finer points of the show bird. There are some districts where but few are bred, but when once a farmer takes te the colour he will not part from-them; and there is nothing more pretty than a flock of Barred Rocks on the grass when the Spring sun is shining. 1 he Barred will appear to many as just a grey fowl, and so it is, for the colours are really a light and dark shade of grey, although one might call it a black and white. While of great weight and plenty of flesh, one could not call it an ideal table fowl, though for home use as a family joint there is nothing better, because one can cut and come again. All the Rocks have a yellow leg and skin, and this is against them in the idea of some people; but when once they have been tried, they will be appreciated, for it is the cut and come again sort to make a family dish. This variety always has a good length of leg and neck, which, of course, weigh when being sold this way; and though this would be reckoned as offal in the bird, rt is the only part wihch is in excess of any other. Weight of flesh compared favourably to any other breed. They never make up much as young- sters, but want to go till six months old before being killed; then they make a fine bird, which shews a good breast if only there has been plenty of food supplied. Every colour has the same characteristics, and the self shades are easily understood. There is much in the strain of layers, and when a well- selected pen of Rocks is put up, they will keep peace with some other breeds, though for this alone the Buff is best.

I Social at Bwaun-cae-ourwen 1 The first annual social in connection with the local lodge of the South Wales and Monmouthshire Colliery Officials' Union was j held at the Cae-gurwen Hotel, Gwaun-cae- gurwen, last Saturday. A large number ci members attended, and did ample justice to the really excellent fare provided by the host and hostess, Mr. and Mrs. Jeiskins. After the tables were cleared, a capital programme was gone through. The celebrated Tim Brothers," of Gwaun-cae-gurwen, gave a splendid account of themselves in solos, comic songs, duets, and trios. The brothers are a concert party in themselves, and fully merited the lusty encores their renderings. evoked during the evenin.g. Master Arthur Wyn Williams, Brynaxnman, entertained the < company with penillion singing in the mas- terly style which won for him the title of Juvenile Champion of Wales at the < Neath National Eisteddfod. He was re- j peatedly recalled. Mr. D. G. Williams also < contributed to the programme with a sense of well-sung comics. Toasts were. ably pro- posed to H.M. the King, the Union, the Host and Hostess, and the Ladies in Attendance." Mr. Jenkins and Miss Jenkins responded in happy strains to the last two. Jones, termi- nated a truly enjoyable eveain.g-the first of what is hoped to be a long series of similar functions under the auspices of the Lodge.
