WOUNDED SOLDIERS AND SAILORS…
WOUNDED SOLDIERS AND SAILORS FUND. Our readers will remember that about twelve months ago, the Rev. P. H. Lewis, promised his valuable assistance in augment- ing the above Fund, Eis method would naturally lean towards the musical, and at that time be began to train a choir of children for the purpose, So many entertainments, bow- ever, were held about that time, that Mr Lewis decided to post- pone his performance tiii the end of the year. Hundreds of Barmoutb people, who remember the excellency of previous performances by the children under the exceptionally able conductorsbip of Mr Lewis, will be delighted to learn that the postponed entertainment is to take place at the Pavilion, next Wednesday week, the otb. December. The selected piece is an exceedingly amusing and in- teresting Cantata, entitled The Children's Holiday Concert." We venture to assure our readers that it will be the prettiest thing of its kind, ever performed in the town. Mr Lewis has enlisted the voluntary and willing assistance of a com- pany of well-wishers. A strong Orchestra Band will take part, the children's costumes will be as dainty and pretty as fond mothers and many other kind ladies can make them. Mr D.T. Roberts and his friends will leave nothing to be desired, in the way of stage decorations. Not only will this, undoubtedly, be one of the most pleasant evenings of the year, but the ob- ject, for which this trouble is taken is a laudable one. Every one penny of the takings will go to swell the fund, which is being collected to ussist our wounded men, after the war is over. Who can think of a more. deserving obj ect. All the expenses attached to the entertainment have already been defrayed, so that the tola! proceeds will be devoted to the fund, which now stands at close upon £400, but which the pro- moters arc anxious to raise to £500 before i'j is closed. We anticipate one of the best houses ever witnessed at the Pavilion. The performance will command an audience, and the object is one that demands the interest and sympathy of every class of the community. When ladies come round with tickets, we feel certain they will be cheer- fully received, for that will be one of the many wages in which they do their "bit" to help to win the war. Tickets can be reserved at Mr Owen Parry, the Jeweller, or at the Barmouth Library, where the Plan of the Hall can be seen. WEDNESDAY, Dec. 5th. J917.

The Rat? tbe h:b meeting ho bad coHccted thE: sun.! of R- 11 0 t) 18.j. 8,1 d. TIMELY DISCUSSION ON THE RATES QUESTION. Tbe Firwnce Committse reported that the Council would consider, in Corn. mittee, what steps should be taken to recover the arrears of rates now outstanding, as it was the convic- tion of the Finance Committee that there should be a better response on the part of certain ratepayers in view of the substantial reduction granted in this year's rate. The Rate Collector (Mr John Roberts) said that on the 7tb of November be bad sent notices out to all those rate' payers who were behind with the rates, and by November 13tb, a number of ratepayers had paid the rates in futi; others bad paid a certain amount of money on account, whilst others were asking for more time to pay the rates. Many ratepayers bad not paid any heed to the notices he bad sent them. There were some ratepayers who could easily pay the rates, but up to now they bad not paid a single penny and they had no excuse whatever for not paying. Up to the present time, the total amount of ra.ea he bad collected this year was £1,972, which would compare favoura.biy wiLb bbe previous year. Th bairman said that in face of what the Council had done as regards reducing the rates this year, be honestly believed that more rates would have come in, but it was no fault of the Collector. He would have thought, as the Council had made a substantial re. ductionin the rates this year, tba.taii the ratepayers would have paid the rates early. He did net think it was fair at all that some people sbon!d pny the rates and others noti, especially those who could weli afford to pay and had not paid up to now. He nrmly be- lieved that the Council should support the Bate Ccltector in every possible way to hd-ve all the rates in from every ratepayer. He wished to thank all tbosa ratepayers who bad so readily paid the rates this yoa.r. Mr Wiiham Owen said the Council had made the substantial reduction in the rates this year with a view of en- couraging the ratepayers and thought that the ratcpllyüfS would support them in paying the rates in full. Ho could not uaderetacd those people wboc&aid afford to pay the rates and bad not done so. The Council ought to insist thab all the ratepayers should p.ty the rules this year, especially so as the Council had made a substantial reduction. M:' Hpnry Freeman said be quite con- curred with the two previous speakers. It was deplorabie to think that some people who coufd well afford to pay tbo rates bad not paid a single penny yet, whilst otuGi's bad paid. Those people who had not paid were to biame for their notion. He should !ik& to know from the Rate Collector whether the members of the Council were giving the ratepayers a good example in paying the rates early. The Rate Collector said he couM noti very well answer the question, as he thought it was uot a faÎ1' one. Mr Heniy Freeman said ha did not wish t-bab any names should be men- tioned tU-aU.; oniy he beUeved that the members c't the Council should give an example to the Ditcpayet's in paying the rat.es c&y.. Mr Francis Mortis a&ked were tbc rates to be paid before the end of JY.brcb? The Chairman sodd the ra.tes were to be pnJd on demand, but s.he Conucii were giving a little grace in. not de- manding them when due. The Cterk said the rates were to be paid within 14 days after the demand. The Chairman remarked he hoped the locat press would mention that point. The Connci! then reso!vcd into com- mittee to deal with the rates question.
