TO A MOTHER WHOSE SON .DIED…
TO A MOTHER WHOSE SON DIED ABROAD. (May I be allowed to reproduce one of Sumuet Rutherford's iettera written in the Year, 1645. It; may bring comfort to mot-bers who have lost their sons in the present war.— E. J. Parry]. In 1645 Samuel Rutherford wrote a better to Mistress Taytor, comforting her in her sorrow for her son, who bad died away from her !ovp and on.ce. There are so many mothers to-day in M'sLret-s Taylor's case that it seems worth while to reproduce the words of the saintly Scottish minister that they may bring like consolation to our present-day Racbefs The original letter is long, and is here abridged. No other com- ment is needed Grace, jnerey, and peace be to you. Though I have no woridty relation or acquaintance with you, yet I make bold, in Christ, to speak my poor thoughts to you concerning your son lately fallen asleep in the Lord. I know that grace rootetb not out the affection of a Mother, butputteth them on Hiswbee!, Who maketb all things new, that they may be refined therefore sorrow for a dead child is allowed to you, though by measure and ounce-weights. The re- deemed of the Lord ha.ve not a dominion or lordship over their sorrow and other affections, to lavish out Christ's goods at their pleasure "For ye are not our own, ye are bought with a price"; and your sorrow is not your own, nor hath He redeemed you by halves and, there- fore, ye are not to make Christ's Ctoss co cross. Hecommandeth you to weep; and that princely One Who took up to Heaven with Him a man's heart to be a compassionate High Priest because your Fellow and Companion on earth by weeping for the dead. And, therefore, ye are to love that cross, because it was on Christ's shoulders before you. The cup ye drink was at the lips of sweet Jesus, and He drank of it, and so it hatb a smell of His breath, and I con. ceive that ye iove it not the worse because it is sugared; therefore drink and batieve the resurrection of :your son's body. Your sorrow is akin to Christ's sorrow; and the kind and com- passionate Jesus, at every sigh you give for the loss of ycur now gtoriaed cbUd, with a man's heartorietb, Half Mine." It is true your son died before ha did much service to Christ on earth, but there is this to counter.ba!ance, that be hath changed service-houses, but bath not changed service or Master, And ye are not to think it a bad bargain for your beloved son, where be bath gold for copper and brass, and eternity for time. The good Husbandman may pluck His roses in the beginning of the first summer month, and He may transplant young trees out of the lower ground to the higher, where they may have more of the sun and a more free air, at any time of the year. They love the see too well who complain of a fair wind and a desirable tide, and a speedy coming aabore in that land where all the inhabi- tants have everlasting joy upon their beads. Your son cannot be too earty in Heaven; his twelve hours were not abort hours. And dying in another land, where his Mother cou!d not close his eyes, is not the worst. Who closed Moses' eyes ? And who put on his winding-sheet? For aught I know, neither father nor mother, nor friend, but God only. And there is as expeditions, fair and easy a way betwixt Scotland and Heaven as if he bad died in his bed at home. The whole earth is bis Father's any corner of his Father's bouse is good to die in." Grace be with you. Your brother and well-wisher, SAMUEL RUTHERFORD.
