DISABLED SOLDIERS AND SAILORS…
DISABLED SOLDIERS AND SAILORS FUND. A FEW weeks ago it was pro- posed to hold a Sale on a very modet; pcnie to -.i.tiprment a fund, which has already been started, to supplement any Government aHowance which will be made to any soldier or sailor in the parish of LIanaber who may be so aeriously disabled as to prevent him from following his occu- pation after this terrible war is over. The idea was to the liking of the parishioners generaHy. It caught on," with the result that quite a large number of enthusiastic supporters have taken the matter into their own hands. The proposed Sale is likely to turn out to be a success- ful Baar. It is the excellent cause that appeals so strongly to the better feelings uf every man and woman worthy of the name. Stalls have been arranged for Drapery, Grocery, Green Grocery, Confectionery, Refreshments, and Miscellaneous. In addition to goods and artic!es aotd from the Stalls, Mr. Waiter Lloyd Jones will at intervals sel! by public auction. It reftectstbe highest possible credit upon the farmers and tradesmen when we, state that, with but one or two exceptions, they readily and spontaneous!y responded to the appeal of the canvassers, so that the stalls wiU be loaded with a variety of artic!es. So many householders complained that the movement was confined to farmers and business men only, that the Committee decided to throw it open, and accept any article of usefulness or curio, with the result that a large number of pictures, articles of furniture, etc., have already been promised. We wish the movement every success, and hope that the net result will run well into the th ree figures.

; RATEPAYERS MEETING. I
RATEPAYERS MEETING. I War Savings Association Formed at Barmouth. Strong Protest Againat the Increased Railway Fares. (By our own Reporter). Oo Tuesday eight, at the Belle Vue Hall, a pabiic meeting, convened by the Urban District Council, was held with a view of forming a War {Savings Associa- tion in the town. The chair was taken by Mr WiHiam Owen, J.P., Chairman of the Council, and there was a good attendance. The Chairman, at the outside, ex* plained that the meeting had been called on the advice of Mr Haydn Jones, M P for the county, who had been asked by the National War Savings Association to canvass the county, for the purpose of forming War Savings Associations, and be was very g!ad to see the County Member present at tha meeting. It was their duty to do ai! in their power to help the Government to bring this terrible war to an early and successful issue, and the Government were appealing for more money to carry on the war. He hoped that a local War Savings Association would be formed that evening, and that all the in. habitants wou!d give it all the support they ooutd. He had every faith in the townspeopte that they woutd do their otmoat in taking oat war Joans. He then ca!!ed upon Mr Edward Rowlands, Penna!, the Organizing Secretary of the County War Savings Aesooiatton, to addrMa the meeting. ',¡" Mr Rowtands explained that Mr Haydn Jones had been asked by the National War Savings Afsooiation in London to do bis best with a view of forming War Savings Associations la the county of Merioneth, and up to the present he was glad to be able to fay that twenty War Savings Associations bad been formed in the county. He hoped that a iooat association would be established at Barmoutb, as the Governmpnt were at present appeating most etrongty for more money to carry on the wqei He then fnity pxp!ain<*d bow a local association would be carried on, and said that. war savings certiR- Cfttea ccu!d he purchased for 15/6 each, The only !imita<ion was that no indi- vidufll could bny mma than 600 Cftincatea Thf war savings ceruS. For aehoo! children and a!i young people this was an excellent way of saving, and helping to bring the war to a apeedy issue. ? Mr B. Haydn Jones, M.P.. in the course of an exceitoot speech, said that be had already addressed fifteen meet. inge in the county with this movement, and he hoped that Barmouth would I form a strong locat association. In forming iooat associations, they were appealing to the sma!! investors to come forward and lend the Government aa much money as they could. The Govern- ment were in need of money and the country were responding to the cati in a most ernest manner. The money in- vested was absolutely safe, and if it was needed at any time it could be got back from the association, and no income tax would have to be paid at the end of the five years. Any one present by tending money, to the Government would be doing a great service to the count'y, and be appealed most strongly to all to do its Jittle b!t by taking out war Joans. All of them were anxious to see this terrible war coming to an end, and be did not think that the end was far distant. The Government needed men and munition, bat they atso needed money to bring this war to an end. All ofthpm coutd do their JtttUo bit in win- ning this war, and those of them, who were privileged to stay at home, woutd help the Government materially if they would take out war loans. Apui! and a put! together was essential to have a iaating victory, and be sincerejy hoped that an association would be formed at Barmoutb and that a!t the townspeople would do what they oouid in taking out war loans. The Chairman said that Barmoutb bad not yet been behind with anything in connection with the war and ho was sure that this movement woutd be taken up in ernest by a!t. On the propoaitioo of the Rev. R. Lloyd Roberta MA. (Rural Dean), seconded by Councillor John Robertf, Ripon House, ibwaa unanimously de' cidedtoform a War Savings Associa- tion for Barmouth. The foliwing were thereupon elected as omcera and committee to carry the matter through:— Secretary, Mr Henry Freeman, G!an. aoeoo. Treasurer, Mr Rees Jonea, Moss Bank. CommittfW :—Tbe Rfv. Murtin WUHams, the following reso!u- ttun was unan!mous!y paaapd That this pubhc meeting of !odging bouse kepppts Mnd ttadpsmpn view with atarm and anxiety the gtoomy prospects of the town for the Coming season. The ad. vance in the railway fares will seriously interfere with the advent of visitors to the district. We therefore CMtt upon the Government to take immediate steps to remove this order to enabte ioytd ppopte to support thair country when such assistance is so urgent." On the proposition of Mr Edward WiHiams, seconded hy Mr Rhys Jones, a hearty vote of tbanka was accorded to the speakers. The singing of God Save the King brought a successful meeting to a close.
