BARMOUTH BOY SCOUTS. The week ending on Wednesday, July 12th, 1916, will be a red-letter week in the annals of the Boy Scouts movement in Barmouth. Long had t,be young scouts looked forward for a week under canvas, and great was their joy and ex- citement when they were informed that arrangements bad been completed for them to spend a week camping out at Geilfawr. As the selected ground was situated some two miles up the moun- tains, it meant considerable labour to cart up the tents, bedding, provisions and all the rest of the necessary paraphernalia'; but wiicu iij«# iucculi\a of labour is love, and the actors in the drama are young and brimming over excitement and enthusiasm, obstacles are easily overcome. Thus it was in this case. A large handcart was pro- cured, to which two long ropes were fastened. With our sturdy Assistant Sboutmaster, Mr Caradoc Evans, in the shafts and fifteen eager Scout Boys at each rope, a start was made from the parade ground at 8-80, and the camping ground reached at 10 o'clock. Supper had to be prepared, beds made, and with the excitement of baviog to sleep away from home for the first time in their lives, no wonder they were up with the lark in the morning. At 6-30 in the morning they were marching through the town, and, with the beating of the drum and playing of the bugle-band, they fairly startled the natives. SomeBel- gian refugees jumped out of bed scream- ing with joy, concluding that it was the herald of a joy-day at the announcement of peace. 19m truly sorry for the rude .awakening that followed. Each day a similar programme was followed. Up at 6 in the morning—a thorough wash in the cold and silvery stream that runs close to t,he camp, breakfast, and down in (be town by 7 o'clock-some to their employment, others to sun eirands and help before going to school. On Sunday the mode of proceedure was slightly varied They stayed in the C'mp all ÔHY. After breakfast, a service was held fiom 10 to 11 15, under the able management of the Scoutmaster, Mr D R. Williams. At 12 30 their mid- day meal was served this consisted of ronat beef, new potatoes, and green peas, with tinned pears and apricots for sweets, tyid oranges and bananas for tfeseeifc. In the afternoon they were allowed their freedom. Some went for a ramble over the mountains, while others sat about reading. At 6 o'clock a service was held, when a powerful discourse was delivered by the Scoutmaster on beauty and purity- beauty of human, animal and vegitable fcftms, natural beauty as exhibited in the surroundings, but the greatest of all beauty was a beautiful life, a beautiful chatacter. A powerful and touching lesson was given on the purity and cleanliness of body and mind, word and deed, which elements are characteristic of true scouIs. About forty Barmouth friends of the boyb who came to visit the camp attended the service and joined in the singing. A collection amounting to over 7/- was made at the close, the object of which was to send a small token of cheer to John Morris, one of the Boy Scouts who unfortunately i& an inmate of the Bryn Sciont Hospital, Carnarvon. Thanks are due to Mrs Maurer, 5, Pavilion Miss Richards, 6, Porkington ■Terrace; ftÐdMr Morgan Richards, Fronoleu, for their kind and practical, though unsolicited monetary support; to Mr Ingram and Mr Owen Llewelyn Williams for the loan of their camping tents, and in particular to Mro Williams, Geilfawr, who spared no trouble to make the boys comfortable. The Scoutmaster, Mr D. R. Williams, and his assistant, Mr Caradoc Evans, deserve the highest credit for the keen interest they are taking in the boys. The Committee were particularly fortun- ate in securing the services of these two young men as masters. The conduct of the boys, with one or two f xeeptions, wns exeeptionrily good, and I undpistand that the promotion of HughIe Willianis-one of the senior bc,y--is contemplated, as a recognition of tip pplendid assistance be rendered. I liiigt, that the boys will reap some benf fit. from the change, both in body and iiiitjd.
