.,COUNTY APPEAL TRIBUNAL.
that they had granted the military re- presentative's appeal and had decided not to grant exemption. They also refused exemption to Evan Morris, assitfmt teacher, Llanuwchliyn, and J, Llewelyn Davies, head teacher at Llawrybettws. In deciding the cases, the Central Tribunal had before them circaiar 927 of the Board of Education and received an assurance that provided every reasonable effort was made to secure a satisfactory substitute, the Merioneth Education Committee would not suffer in the way of grants. The Military Repiesentuti ve appealed against conditional exemption granted to Wm. Hughes, headmaster of Tyny- berth Council School, Corris, and John Daniel Davies, headmaster of Rhoslefain Council School, Towyn. These cacies were adjourned from the last sitting so that the decision of the Central tribunal in the other cases given above should be known. At the previous bearing, Mr Richard Sarnett, clerk to the M E C., said that the Board of Education would not give grants in respect of schools not in charge of a certified teacher. Capt. Hughes said that the present cases were identical with the three al- ready decided by the Central Tribunal. Evidence was given by the two masters appealed against, and Mr R. Barnett stated that there were 52 teachers of military age in the county. Of those, nine were rejected and 11 had enlisted. Of the remaining 32, eighteen were head teachers, eleven being mar- ried. Of the seven single men left, the Central Tribunal bad decided that two must go. All the assistant teachers except two were called up, so that over 60 per cent of the male teachers of the county would have gone. Relative to the grants, Mr Barnett said that if the head teachers were taken the attend- ance would suffer. A drop of fiue per -cent-and be anticipated a larger drop- meant a, loss of £1,000 to the county. The Military Rresentative's appeal were allowed, with the provisio that the military shoufd not call the men np for 14 days. The members of the M.E.C. did not sit on these cases. NOT IN ORDER. An appeal by the Military Represen- tative against conditional exemption granted Robert Peter Williams, Tyntwll, Dinfls Mawddwy, was down for bearing. Mr William George for respondent, claimed that the tribunal could not hear the case. Robert P. Williams was an attested man. His brother, John Williams, was unaltested and had been refused exemption. He was, however, found to be unfit for service, and the Military Representative gtve notice of review on the ground that R. P. Wil- iiams should take the place of bis re- jected brother. It appeared that the case fchad been reviewed by the local tribunal wijbhout notice being given to the man, and after he had received notice to appear at Barmouth, and the certificate of exemption withdrawn behind his back. The Tribunal ruled that they bad no locus standi to hear the appeal. OTHER APPEALS. Howell Jones, Tynybuartb, Llanfach- reth (21), who appealed on physical grounds at the last tribunal, but who has since been passed for general ser- vice by the Medical Board, was refused exemption. John Llewelyn Owen, Dolgelley, was given until August 18th.—This appeal was beard in private. His employer appealed for Humphrey Thomas Evans (40), coal carter, Dol- gelley.—Refused. His employer appealed for Maldwyn Jo nes, Aberllefenni, slate planer and under foreman. His withdrawal would involve great dislocation of work.- Refused. His employer appealed for John Williams, l'aiin servant,, Dolgelley.- Dismissed. An appeal by Griffith Davies, against lempofiny exemption granted John Ief, is Davies, Aberdovey, was beard in ett nie Exempted until September ■30th.
