A WARNING TO LODGING-HOUSE…
A WARNING TO LODGING- HOUSE KEEPERS. A number of Towyn lodging-house keepers were at the Towyn Police Court last week charged with failing to register visitors under the Alien's Restriction Order, Defendants ad- mitted the offences and said that as the people who stayed with them were very weJI known to them they did not ask them to sign on their arrival. The Chief Constable (Mr Richard Jones), said the object of the proceed- ings was not to punish the defendants, but to warn the public that the Registration order must be carried out. He did not ask for a penalty, but wished all lodging-house keepers to take serious warning not to repeat their omission. Heavy penalties were pro- vided under the Act. In reply to a question by one of the defendants, the Chairman said it was their duty to do all possible to help the country, so that if they entertained sus- picions regarding any visitor they should report to the police. The cases were dismissed as a varning on payment of 4s. in respect of each defendant.
MERIONETH EDUCATION.I
MERIONETH EDUCATION. I The annual meeting of the Merioneth Education Committee was held at Bala on Wednesday last. Dr. John Jones, Dolgelley, was re- elected Chairman for the ensuing year. The Clerk (Mr Barnett), in sub. mitting the estimates of expenditure for the ensuing year, said the grants from the Board of Education bad dropped from iCl5,000 three years ago to R13,250 last year, whilst there was a decrease of of 1,000 ebildi;en-attedding the Council schools compared with the number ten years ago. The committee during the last winter provided free meals to 300 children each day at a cost of JE150. Another serious item of expenditure was the payment of travelling expenses of children, which bad increased from £ 150 to nearly 2400. A curtailment in this respect could be effected, and no doubt many asked for travelling expenses for their children who could well afford to pay. He estimated the expenditure atv £ 15,554, including an overdraft of £ 2,000. Ib was resolved to levy a rate of Is. 3^d. in the pound, as against Is. 2d. last year. .»
