The Council's Workmen.-The two new workmen appointed last week by the Urban District Couucil to do the scavenging work, etc., at £ 1 per week plus Is. war bonus, did not after all accept the work, and consequently the Council have re-appointed Mr Richard Lloyd, and Mr Robert Griffith, (two of the four employees who wanted an increase to Xl 8s. Board of Trade and the County Member. House Reftise.-Re,-tlizing the ut-gent need for economy in every department, the Urban Council on Monday last re arranged the system in force for the I collect, ion of house refuse, and only one cart will henceforth do the work. Some I inconvience will doubtless he felt, but, having regard to the motive which I prompted the Council to effect this economy, it is to be hoped that the Council's action will neet with the rate- payer's approval. It is suggested that all refuse such as paper, etc., which can be burut, should be so dealt with by each householder. The Council have for some months past been paying 5s for half day for collecting and taking the refuse away, as the Council bad only one horse, thus 30s. a week will be saved in that direction. At the same time, it is the dutykof the Council to see that the town is kept clean and tidy, and if this new arrangement does not work out successfully they will only haveto go back to the old practice.
