ORGANISING BRITISH ENGINEERING…
ORGANISING BRITISH ENGINEERING INDUSTRY. WE are glad that engineers are giving serious consideration to the problem of ensuring not only the return 'of commercial and in- dustrial equilibrium, but the quick expansion of our export trade, after the termination of the war. This is the more neces- sary, as the financial conditions imposed, even with the maximum of military success, will be a serious handicap to the nation and to industry. The burden, in consequence of the war, can only be met without serious hardship by great expansion of our export trade. There have been repeated articles in our columns to show that already the Germans are organising industries in order to recover the export trade which they have lost through the silent pressure" of the British ISavy; and it is incumbent upon every- one associated with trade to take measures, not only to cultivate new markets, but U to meet the threatened competition in every part of the world. To effect this purpose, a higher degree of co- operation is necessary in the future than has characterised our methods in the past. We are therefore glad to learn of schemes to this end, and one of them worthy of close study is that elaborated by a special com- mittee of the Engineers' Club, of Manchester, which has gone to the question very carefully. Their report, the outcome of a year's consideration, was submitted to the Club at its meeting held re- cently. rphe contention is that the time has comeefor a spirit of conference and co-operation to leaven that British independence which, despite its fine qualities, has hitherto hampered combined action. This, it is urged, can be achieved by a voluntary organi- sation of the whole industry, based upon the recognition of the interest common to competing firms a,nd common also to em- ployer and employed—an associ- ation on a non-trading and non- interence-with-price busis, to speak with a powerful collective voice on matters with which Parliament is concerned,to assist the Government in questions connected with industry and commerce, and to represent the industries and governing bodies of universities and technical col- leges.
I RESULTS TELL.
I RESULTS TELL. There can be no doubt about the results in Barmouth. Results tell the tale. All doubt is removed. The testimony of a neighbour can be easily investigated. What better proof can be had? Mrs A. Hiam, of Cliftondale, Marine Road, near the Promenade, Barmulb, says Pains have troubled me across the back occasionally during the last twelve months. I bad also headaches with tired, lanquid feelings about me. "I was greatly relieved by taking Doan's backache kidney pills. I proved them to be very effective in my own case of kidney trouble, and I have the greatest pleasure in recommending them to others. (Signed) 11 A. Hiam." The kidneys lie beneath the small of the back. Their great work is to fil- ter poisonous waste and surplus water out of the blood. But whan they are weak they leave some of this poisonous waste in the system, and you begin to feel dull, heavy and irritable you may get backache, gravel, urinary disorders, dropsical swelling, rheumatism or sciatica. Doan's backache kidney pills help the kidneys to throw off the offend- ing poisons and therefore reach the cause of the above symptons. Price 2/9 a box, of all dealers or trom Foster McClellan, Co., 8, Wells Street, Oxford Street, London, W. Don't ask for backache or kidney pills,-ask distinctly for Doan's backache kidney pills, the same as Mrs Hiam had.
GALLANT RESCUE.
GALLANT RESCUE. A story of the promptitude and pluck of a Walsall clergyman was related at the Walall Police Court last week wht n the framed vellum certificate of the Royal Humane Society was presented to the Rev. Ernest J. Hougbton, assistant priest at Jaldmore Church, in recogni- tion of a gallant rescue ffcom drowning at Aberystwyth on August 80th. In making the presentation, the Mayor (Alderman J. N. Cotterell) said the facts of the case were as follows :At about mid-day on August 80th there was a heavy sea running and much serf on the beach, and while Mr Houghton and a number of other visitors .were on the shore it was seen that a boy namd AJwyn Jones was noticed to be in diffi- culties, although he was a good swimmer. He bad disappeared under the waves more than once when Mr Houghton rushed in and swam to the boy, saving his life at the risk of losing his own. With considerable difficulty he brought him to the shore in an ex- hausted condition, and the saving of his life was attributed to the gallant act on the part of Mr Houghton.
