HOW LONG WILL OUR COAL LAST?
HOW LONG WILL OUR COAL LAST? The Royal Commission on Coal Supplies reported in 1905 that the contents of the proved coal- fields of the United Kingdom were 100,000 million tons, and of the still unproved coalfields 40,000 million tons. Taking the latter at 25,000 million tons, then at the present rate of consump- tion, we have still five hundred years' supply. Five hundred years is certainly a long time to look forward to, and if we can assure posterity an ample coal supply for that period, they will not have much to reproach us with. But the calculation turns entirely on the assumption that our present rate of consumption will not be increased. Forty years ago our coal production was 132 million tons, of which 14 million tons were exported. In 1903 it was 230 million tons, and in 1911 it was 272 million tons, or more than twice what it was in 1875. If this rate of in- crease is mained, the estimate of 500 years will dwindle to two figures before the present cen- tury has expired. There is, how- ever, a great deal of coal in the world outside of these islands, and already there is known to be in existence 7,3(.)7,553 million tons equal to the world's re- quirements for 5,400 years at the rate of consumption. This esti- mate should go far to reassure us, so that our descendants will not need to sit over coal hearths, for although we find it repugnant to picture our country dependent on imported coal, yet the idea is no more possible than our living on imported wheat or meat. Sixty years ago it was counted impossible that the Western prairies of America could com- pete with our own wheafcfields, but we have all lived'to see it. 9
BARMOUTH'S QUESTION.
BARMOUTH'S QUESTION. The proof was Barmouth proof, and Barmouth bad confidence in a neigh- bours word. But there was still a question-would the cure prove lasting? A reassuring answer is given here by a Barmouth resident. On January 30th, 1909, Miss S. U. Davies, of 5, Glasfor Terrace,Barmouth, said:—" 1 began to suffer with dragging pains across my back and loins about twelve months ago. I felt so tired that I could hardly keep to my work. My knees were weak and stiff, and I felt al- together out of sorts. I had no doubt that my kidneys were causing the trouble so I made up my mind to try Doan's backache kidney pills. I was pleased to find these pills were just the medicine I needed, for after I bad taken a few doses the pains began to leave me and the tired feelings- pnssed away and I was able to get about with ease. I am as well as ever I have been, and if Ifeel any sign of the old trouble returning I shall certainly use Doan's pills. I heartily recommend them. (Signed) 3. C. Davies." On March 29th, 1915 —over six years later-.tuiss Davies said My health is very good now, and I attribute this to Doan's pills, which cured me six years ago. Often those in the greatest danger from kidney oomplaint do not know their kidneys are diseased, and so the trouble is beglected until it reaches a serions stage. Cure your kidney while you can, by commencing with a course of Doan's backache kidney pills at once if you have any such clear signs of kidney disorder as urinary sedimeat, gravel, signs of rheumatism, pains in the back and loins, and dizziness. Price 2/9 a box, of all dealers or trom Foster McClellan, Co., 8, Wells Street, Oxford Street, London, W. Don't ask for backache or kidney pills,—ask distinctly for Doan's backache kidney pills, the same as Miss Davies had.
