BOY SCOUTS and MILITARISM.
BOY SCOUTS and MILITARISM. Reprint, by permission, of leading article from the Manchester Guardian" of October 24th, 1913. For some days there has been a dispute in our correspondence columns about the Boy Scout movement, one side holding that its spirit is militarist and the other that it is not. The dispute might never end of itself, for both sides are right at least, both have something to say which cannot be altogether dis- missed. It is quite true, on the one side, that General Baden Powell, the extraordinarily ener- getic and inspiring fonnder of the movement, has made a few slight attempts in print to influence the Scouts' mind in a militarist or big-armament direc- tion. On the other hand, the intention and spirit of the move- ment are unquestionably neither militarist nor anti-militarist, but simply recreative and lightly educational, all the stress being laid on the practice of the good ordinary decencies of boyhood,on loyalty to accepted and quite sound ideals of comradeship and self-control, and on the acquision of the general quality of gump- tion,' or practical sense and alertness of mind. The move- ment sprang from the mind of a person eminently boyish, in the best sense, and its appeal to the boyish mind, which loves every form of practical ingenuity or contraptiousness," and of pictur- esque and elastic concerted action, has deservedly been enor- mous. To a multitude of sons of people who are not well-to-do we believe it offers an equivalent to what other boys, if they use their opportunities, may derive from the outdoor life of a good public school. It would be the greatest pity if those who, like ourselves, do not believe that war is either a school of character or a reputable means of national gain were to stand aloof from a movement so sane and right in all its essentials as Boy-Scouting, and leave it, perhaps, to be captured by the foolish people who do think it a good thing to seek war and ensue it. It is our intention, in future,to devote what might be designated as Boy Scouts Corner' in every issue of the Advertiser. This corner will contain any items of interest concerning our own £ Branch' as well as anecedotes and camp-fire yarns out of Scouting for Boys,' by Lieut- Gen. Sir R. Baden-Powell,K.C.B. and other literature on Scouting. Occasionally we hope to receive short contributions from our own Boy Scouts, for even a small beginning in that way may tend to give their mind a turn in the right direction.
ABERYSTWYTH RESIDENTS GRATITUDE.
ABERYSTWYTH RESIDENTS GRATITUDE. Purely out of gratitude, and with the wish that others may profit by his experience, a resident of our neighbour- ing town, Aberystwyth, authorises the publication of the following. Mr E. White, wno lives at 6, Pound Place, near the Parish Church, Trinity Rond, Aberystwyth, is now stationed at Gibraltar, in the Royal Naval Naval Reserve, and has spent twenty-five years altogether in the Navy. On Sept. 4th, 1911, Mr White said: I have had kidney trouble for the last four years or so shooting pains seized me right across my back, and these preven- ted my standing erect after bending. Fearful bendaches also bothered me, as well as dizziness. There waa gravel in the water, and I had scalding pains when seeking relief. I lost energy for work, but after taking Doan's backache kidney pills I bad great relief. They put new life in- to me, and I feel a different man a.together. I shall cestainly recommend Doan's pills to others, for I have faith in them as a kidney medicine. (Signed) E. White." On April 1st, 1915-nearly four pears later.—Mrs White said I am pleased to say my husband is in the best of health, in fact, was never better." Often those in tke greatest danger from kidney complaint do not know their kidneys are diseased, and so the trouble is neglected until it reaches a serious stage. Cure your kidney while yon can, by commencing with Doan's backache kidney pills as soon as you notice any such clear signs of kidney disorder as urinary sediment, gravel, pains in the loins and back, rheumatism and dizziness. Price 2/9 a box, 6 boxes 13/9, of all dealers, or from Foster McClellan, Co., 8, Wells Street, Oxford Street, London, W. Don't ask for backache or kidney pills,—ask distinctly for Doan's backache kidney pills, the same as Mr White had.
