I REVIEW.
I REVIEW. UNTIL THE DAY DAWS. By John Puleston Jones,M.A. (London: James Clarke & Co. 3/6 net). So many books have been written on the inspiration of the Bible that it re- quires some courage in a writer to take in band to add to the pile. And after all it must be admitted that the best book on the subject is the Bible itself; but the more we search and study it the more difficult we find it to define its inspiration. The honest and diligent student of the Book when asked: "What is Divine inspiration ? may answer in the words of a great English philospher in referring to a similar question If you don't ask me I know." Although the book before us does not contain much that is new and original on inspiration, the author's fresh and interesting way of dealing with the sub- ject justifies his attempt. It may be mentioned that the homiletic diversions are among the best things in the book, and some, undoubtedly, will object to it because of its sermonic character but it must be remembered that the author above all is a preacher, and for Welsh readers this will be in its favour, because of their fondness of sermons. The pithy comments on passages of the Bible and apt illustrations make the book of great value for preachers and Sunday school teachers and scholars. In our opinion the author spends too much time with the Spirit and the Letter, andhad he satisfied himself with one chapter instead on two on that sub- ject and added one on Inspiration and Revelation it would have greatly added to the completeness of the work. What were the human conditions for the high water mark of inspiration in the Bible I,' when the revelation of Divine truth in a special sense became possible, and what are the reasons that similar con- ditions will never be possible again ? A chapter on these questions would have added to the interest and value of the book. There is much in the able chapter on Characteristics of Scripture Inspiration with which we agree but we fail to see how the fact that an apostle is a first- hand witness gives speciality to his inspiration, which differs only in degree to that of believers in general It would be as proper to call the inspiration of Christ's messenger in the twentieth cen- tury functional as that of the witnesses of the first century. As Dr. James H i nL. on reni,,trks:Irispit-ation goes 5 with the life it is a part of it; having life from Christ we must be inspired. And our inspiration is of course the same as that of the Scriptural writers, their inspiration was that they were made alive; it was not intellectual, nor is ours. How simple it would have been if instead of beginning a long way off we bad commenced from the present. We are inspired but we know our in- spiration does not guard us from error; i.e. is not intellectual; it is a fact of life in the actual Being; it belongs not to the physical or mental, but to the spiri- tual." So the writers of the Bible may contradict each other, but the revelation it contains cannot contradict itself. Some orthodox readers will, undoub- tedly, consider the book too advanced, but before forming an opinion of it we advise them to give it a careful perusal and study. It is written with great simplicity and in a deeply religious spirit, and we cordially commend it to our readers.
ICORRESPONDENCE.
CORRESPONDENCE. We do not hold ourselves responsible fot the opinions of our correspondents. To the Editor. Dear Sir,— With reference to the paragraph on the importance of obscuring lights, I may say that for some weeks it bus surprised me that so many are to be seen from Lhvyngwrii, a distance of Si- miles as the crow flies. Some are so brilliant that I. suppose them to be electric or incandescent* gas. On Saturday the number was greater than usual. As the sun sets about eight, none should be seen after nine o'clock, yet on clear nights some are seen at ten thirty. In former years the view of Barmouth with its rows of lights has beeu a source of pleasure to August visitors at Llwyngwril, We will gladly excuse the people of Barmoutb if .they do not provide the illuminations while the war lasts. Yours truly, OBSERVER.

From the Papers. The body of a girl visitor to Howtb, near Dublin, was found on the roaks on Tuesday, 150 ft. from the top of the cliff. She has not been identified. She wore an engagement ring and a wrist watch. During a violent storm over North Hertsou Monday, eleven sheep belonging to Mr Farr, of Weston, near Stevange were killed by lightning. Crops were enormously damaged, and floods have occured. The torrential rainfall con- tinues. ❖ of. Simeon Stimotis, a Lithuanian Pole, who had come to J St. Hdens from Earlestown without a permit, was ordered to find sureties of X2- Defendant, through an interpreter, said he desired to work at St. Helens. He wos told at Earlestown that he could not do that,so he came to the town to enquire at the Town Hall why he could not.
