Coronation Band.—The Coronation Band gave a concert on the Promenade on Tuesday evening, July 6Lb, but the weather was against it, and consequently the attendance was only meagre—a pity. On Thursday evening they gave a con- cert at Porkington Terrace. The pro- gramme was good, Gems of Cambria" being creditably performed. Though the best items of the evening were 11 My I I' little Snowdrop and Scottish Gems." We are sure the people of Barmouth and the visitors now realise they have got a real live band and feel proud of it. The band have been practising all' the winter, having shut themselves up within four bare walls and kept, tbeharmony to the few who penetrated the inner chambers of the rehearsal room. Now we bear the band playing twice a week, and their playing is a pleasure to their many supporters, and a credit to their painstaking con- ductor. The band will play on the Pro- I nienade every Tuesday evening through- I I out the season, and other parts of the I town on Thursday evening.' It was reported that a valuable gift of Books had been received from Mrs Keigbtley of Glanmawddach. Several members spoke in the most eulogistic terms of the generosity of Mrs Keigbtley, and a hearty vote of thanks was passed. In addition to the books 17 numbers cf The Times History of the War were presented by Mrs Keigbtley, Mr Bal linger, National Library, Aber- ystwyth, presented a new volume entitled Sir Alfred Lewis Jones, K.C.M.G," by A. H Milne, C M.G. The Secretary was instructed to acknowledge the gift with thanks. The Quarterly Report was submitted and considered most satisfactory. Improvement Association.—A meet- ing of the above Committee was held on Friday night, at the New Council Offices. Present:-Re% Gw)noro Davies (chair- man), Dr. J. Pugh Jones, Mr J. Jones (The Library), Mr Henry Freeman, Mr Gwilym Davies, Mr John Morgan, Mr John Roberts, C.C., Mr Rhys Jones, and Mr William Owen with Mr R. Llewelyn Owen (secretary).' The Chairman said that the .meeting bad been called to decide what steps could be taken to advertise the town in the daily press. Applications for the guide book were received daily, and the Secretary«had sent quite a large number by post. Now was the proper time to advertise the town, and he quite agreed with the letter that appeared in the Barmouth Advertiser that week. The question to be settled was how to obtain the necessary funds to carry on the work. The Committee bad an abundant supply of the guide books in band. The Chairman said be understood that the Secretary (Mr R. Llewelyn Owen) had been sending the guide books by post at his own expense, and further that he bad not been paid anything for his services during last year. j -==- Mr J, Jones said that it would be well if the Committee approached those who derived the most benefit from visitors when they came into the town. Mr John Morgan concurred and added that those who derived the most from the visitors did not help the Committee in the least as regards funds to adver- tise the town. Mr Henry Freeman said that one of the best friends the town ever bad for helping the Committee financially was Mr John Walters of the Art Pictures Pavilion, and be was sure that if Mr Walters was approached again be would help the Committee. Mr John Morgan (honorary treasurer) reported that the Association had a bal- ance of 14 10s. Od. in its favour. The Chairman said be was very glad to hear such a favourable report. The Secretary reported that from last May up to now he had sent 485 copies of the guidebook by post to different parts, and that day 15 applications were received for the guide books. The Chairman said that steps should be taken forthwith to advertise the town in the daily press. Mr Rbys Jones said he had inserted an advertisement in the Daily Des- patch at his own expense, as he be- lieved that it would be a great loss to the town that no advertisement appeared in any of the daily papers. The adver- tisement was no gain at all to him, but to the town in general. Of course, it bad been some expense, but he bad done it for the town. In response to that advertisement, be bad sent 150 copies of the guide by post, and applica- tions were coming in daily. The Chairman said be had also sent a good number of guide books by post. Mr J. Jones (The Library) said be bad sent between 40 and 50 guide books in response to applications by po-t. The Chairman said that close upon 700 guide books had been sent by post since last May. In reply to a question, Mr Rbys Jones said that the advertisement first ap- peared in the Daily Despatch about Whitsuntide, and was inserted every alternative day. The Chairman said that it was very kind of Mr Rhys Jones to insert the advertisement at his own expense. He believed that the town ought to be ad. vertised. Other towns along the Coast were advertising, and there was no sea- side place along the North Wales Coast that could compare with Barmouth. Mr J. Jones said that other towns along the Cardigan Bay Coast were ad. vertising extensively, and Barmouth should not be left behind. Something should be done at once, and he suggested that an appeal should be made for funds to advertise the town in the daily press. No doubt they were behind with other towns in this respect, and perhaps it would be better for them to resign en bloc as suggested by a letter signed "Anxious" which appeared in the Ad. vertiser that week. Mr John Roberts—Perhaps the writer cf the letter has some money to give himself for advertising. Dr. J. Pugh Jones-The Advertising Committee had done good work in the past for the town. The Chairman—Yes, excellent work. Dr. J. Pugb Jones -We bad better resign and ask the writer cf the letter in the Advertiser to come to their aid and do the work. After some further discussion, it was decided that the members present should call personally upon a number of tradesmen, lodging-house keepers and others, and to point out the importance of havfcig funds to advertise the town in the daily press forthwith. Further it was decided to advertise in a number of leading papers, with what funds was available.. The meeting was adjourned until the canvassers bad called when a report of their work will be presented.
