HENDREMYNACH BELGIAN HOUSE.
HENDREMYNACH BELGIAN HOUSE. In presenting the Balance Sheet to the public, the Committee would like to record their thanks to Mrs Parker Smith for lending the house to Dr. J. p. Heath for his kindness and attention to the Belgians under his charge, es- pecially during two severe illnesses, which necessitated his attendance seve- ral times a day; to Mrs Keighfcley for her generous supply of vegetables for more than four months; to Mr Hum. phrey Jones, London City & Midland Bank, for the trouble be has taken in auditing the accounts; and finally to the many kind friends and neighbours who have contributed so many gifts of food, clothing and furni- ture, without which the Committee could not have presented such a satis- factory balance sheet. Twenty-six Belgians have been pro- vided for,—six men, six women, and fourteen children. Of this number we have lost one child, of ten months old, of double pneumonia after measles. Pierre Welan has gone to some Govern- ment works at Peterborough, and is now busily engaged making torpedoes and mines for the Admiralty. Konigslower and his wife and child have gone to a farmer in Huntingdon, and are now engaged in agricultural work. In their place we have taken a Belgian family of four,—a man and his wife and two children. In consideration of the satisfactory balance in band, the Committee have decided not to ask for fur- ther contributions for the next three months, trusting that at [he end of that time, should the necessity arise, sub- scribers will again come to their aid in ttbe generous manner they have done before. Carr Jones was well known in Barmouth to residents and visitors as a member of the famous Royal Magnets. Mr Carr Jones acted as accompanist and flutist in the company. His genial manners and clever executions as a musician won him many friends, who, we feel sure, extend sincerest sympathy to the mourning relatives. Obituary. —It is with deep regret we have to record the death of Mr John Williams, Tanygrisiau, which took place on Thursday after a short illness at the age of 78 years. Deceased bad been in the employ of the Urban Dis- trict Council for many years and was always well spoken of by the ratepayers for his faithful and honest services ren- dered to the Council. He was highly- respected by a large number of friends and was a faithful member of the Baptist Chapel. The funeral, which was private, took place on Saturday afternoon at Llanaber Churchyard, the officiating minister being the Rev. E. J. Parry. The duties of undertaker were carried out by Mr Richard Roberts, Ivy House. Much sympathy is extended to his two sons, viz, Messrs John and David Williams in their sad bereave- ment. At the Barmouth Council on Thursday night a vote of condolence was passed with the family in their sad bereavement. Bowling Club, -The annual meeting of the Bowling Club was held on Thurs- day last, Councillor R. W. J one, presiding over a good attendance of members. It was reported that the Tennis Club had agreed to let the Club have the use of the same ground as last year, and as the membership fee has been reducted to 2s. Gd., it is confidently expected that the number of members will be greatly in excess of last year. It was decided that a Tournament bould commence on May 26tb., for which a first and second prize is to be awarded. The entrance fee is three- pence, and names must be given in to the Secretary not later than Tuesday evening next, when the draw will take place, the result of which will be ex- hibited in the Waverley Cafe window on Wednesday morning. The charms of Barmouth the Beautiful appeaPvery much to the family, and they never tire of singing the Vi-aisesof its health giving properties. Belgian Pupils.—At the Merioneth Education Committee held last week at Bala. Alderman T. Martin Williams, J.P., said about thirty to forty Belgian child- ren attended the Council School. The staff found considerable difficulty in meeting their requirements. He there- fore, on behalf of the Managers, asked the Committee's permission to engage a Belgian teacher to attend to tbem. The Clerk, in answer to a question, said the Committee could* delegate power to the local managers to make the appoint- ment.—It was decided to give power to appoint a teacher at 10s. a week. The Penny Fund for the Sick and Wounded.—On Tuesday afternoon at the Bella Vue Hall a well attended meeting was held to support the above fund.—The chair was taken by Miss Patchett, Alltfawr, who in the course of her opening remarks said I am here to-day only because I was appealed to from the Chairman of the Sick and Wounded Fund to do all I can to help on the scheme.—Lady OsmondWilliams, as wife of the Lord Lieutenant and President for the Red Cross Association in this county, has been appointed by that Committee to be President of the Penny Fund.'—To inaugurate this fund in the county, she called together a small meeting last week consisting of the Presidents and Secretaries of the V. A. aid detatebments in the county—It was then decided that the County should be worked in polling districts, and a local Committee formed in every district to carry the work through.—Mr Haydn Jones kindly consented to be vice- President, and Mrs Denton was asked, and consented to be Secretary, and Mr Humphrey Jones, Treasurer.—This meeting, to-day, is called for the polling district of Barmouth, which runs from Sponig to Penmaenpool Bi-idge.-IL is sincerely hoped that anyone who is willing to collect fcr this fund will come forward at the end of this meeting which will enable us to form a working Committee, which will be worked on the lines sent down to us from London. The National Penny Fund is simply an attempt to raise money for ambulance work among the troops at the front, whether in France, the Dandanelles, or elsewhere.—The money raised is handed over to a body known as the Joint Com- mittee, composed of half representatives of the British Red Cross Society and half the representatives of St. John's Ambulance, to be used for field purposes only.—Beyond the collection of the money, the Penny Fund Committee have no function whatever.—We simply band over the money to the Joint Com- mittee, and our whole object is to get our fund well advertised and taken np- by any kindly person who is interested in the welfare of the soldiers. This is an object that must appeal to everybody as there are few amongst us who have not, or will not bave, some relatives at thel* ront. Our strong point is we ask only for this one contribution, a penny, or as much as every one thinks he or she can afford for this object. The fund to be closed as soon as possible so as not to interfere with other organisations which must be carried on during the war.— Stirring addresses were also delivered by the Rev. Gwynoro Davies, the Rev. Z, Muthpr, and Mr C. A. Mend ham.
