I DYFFRYN. I DYFFVN. 1 Proceeds of Concert.—The sum of £ S 4s. 4d. has been sent to the Belgian Minister for the Belgian Relief Fund. This sum was the net proceeds of the, concert given by the Patriotic Choir on I February 15th. National Egg Collection for the Wounded.—During the month of Feb- ruary 504 eggs (all Jaid on Sundays)bave been sent to the Depot in London. Belgian Concert.-Under the distin- guished patronage of His Excellency, the Belgian Minister, Count de Lalaing, the Dyffryn Patriotic Choir gave a most successful concert on Monday evening, February 15th., in aid of the Belgian Relief Fund. The Council School, in which the concert was held, by kind permission of the Managers, was packed to the Jast inch, and several late comers were unable to get even standing room. The Patriotic Choir, conducted by Mrs Basil Jones, sang the National Anthems of the Allies. The Marseil- laise and La Brabanconne" with fine effect, and were especially good in the Part Song Soldier Rest," by Oliver King but they aroused the greatest en- thusiasm with "Difyrwch Gwyr Har- lech," which rings like a trumpet call to the Nation in these perilous times. The choir numbered nearly fifty, and the ladies in their white dresses with tri- colour sashes made a pretty picture, against the background of the Union Jack, but it occured to us that though the black coats of the men made an effective contrast, they would have looked better in khaki. Mrs Taylor, who opened the concert with Paderews- ki's Nocturne for the pianoforte, ably played the accompaniments, and the highest praise is due to her for her un- tiling work during the evening. The Male Voice Choir sang "Myfanwy" by Dr. Joseph Parry, and Adolpb Adam's Comrades Song cf Hope," giving an especially good rendering of the latter. Mr Lindsay Jones recited with fine dramatic sense Browning's Pied Piper of Hanelin and Kissing Cup's Race and Mr Eric Lidge, one of the most promising pupils of Professor Henley of Birmingham, played Franz Ordla's Serenade, and the variations on The Old Folks at Home, by August Wilhelms, with a certainty of execution and a delicacy of tone and expression that gave evidnce of true genius. The greatest musical treat of the evening was given by Miss Nortcn, of Cemmaes, who, though suffering from a severe cold, sang magnficently "Birds of Love Divine," and Paul Rubens' stirring song "Your King and Country Want Yon." She was recalled again and again, and was presented, amid great applause, with a bouquet of tulips of the Belgian national colours with streamers to match. The humorous part of the progromme was provided by Mr Duncan Tovey, a Sergeant oftheLon- don Scottish Territorials, who is a visiitor at the Rectory, recovering from wounds received in France. His songs, of his own composition, caused much amuse- ment, especially a parody on Ten Little Nigger Boys" entitled "Ten Little Sausages," and some renderings of the chorus of" Tipperary" as sung by Scottish, Germans, Turks, and lastly a Welsh version bringing in local names. He apologised for appearing in the kilt, which he called his hobble skirt," and explained that be bad left his other garments in Belgium, and the Kaiser had captured them and made them into bags for the German war bread. Thanks are due to the following, who acted as stewards :—Messrs. JobnLewis, Ty'r Iddew Richard Roberts, Bryn- rhyfel; Stanley Davies and Edmund Davies, London House; Wm. Davies, Ysgoldy Mr Lindsay Jones and to the Secretary, Mr Harry Roberts, The Terrace who, as a result of the success of the entertainment, will be able to hand over a considerable sum to the Belgian Relief Fund.
ICORRESPONDENCE.
I CORRESPONDENCE. We do not hold ourselves responsible for the opinions of our correspondents. BARMOUTH LIGHTING. To the Editor. Sir,— The precationary measures taken in reducing the lights of Barmoubb sug- gest a few questions which seem perti- nent to the matter. 1.—Is it not equally important that the lights of Liwyngwril, Harleeb, and Criccieth should be reduced ? 2.—Is ib not the general glow of light above a town that indicates its position quite as much as individual lamps fac- ing the sea ? If so ought jot house- holders and shopkeepers to be asked to use dark blinds as much as possible ? One cannot help doubting whether the slight reduction made will have any effect at a distance on the sea. 3.—Is it not time that the large num- ber of special constables appointed at Barmouth be drilled, trained and in- structed about their duties in case of a visit from an enemy ship or submarine? At Criccieth special constables are on patrol duty during the night. If special constables have been appointed it seems equally important that they should be trained. Yours etc., OBSERVER.
