DIARY OF THE WAR. July 23 —Presentation of Austro-Hungarian Note to Servia, which is given 48 hours to which to reply. July 24-Russian Cabinet Council held. The Austria-Hungarian demands considered an indirect challenge to Russia. July 25—Servian answer considered unsatis- factory by Austria-Hungary. The Austro- Hungarian Minister, with the Legation Staff leaves Belgrade. July 27—Sir Edward Grey announces in the House of Commons his proposals for a Conference of Germany. France, Italy, and Great Britain. Acceptance of proposals by France and Italy. July 28-War declared by Austria-Hungary Servian vessels seized on the Danube. July 30—Partial mobilisation in Russian Army. War Council in Berlin, Bombard- ment of Belgrade. July 31-General mobilisation in Russia State of War declared in Germany. Murder of M. Jaures. August I-War declared upon Russia by Ger- many. Germany invades Luxem burg. August 2-French territory entered at Cirey by German troops. Russian forces cross. German frontier at Schwidden to south east of Biala. August 3—Skirmishes on the Ru,sio-German frontier. Sir Edward Grey defines the atti- tude of Great Britain. British Fleet mobalised. German ultimatum to Belgium. August 4—Ultimatum sent by Great Britain to Germany demanding an assurance that the neutrality of Belgium shall be respected Mobilisation of the British Army. Great Britain declares war on Germany German cruiser captured in Mediteranean by the French. German attack on Leige begins. August 5-German mine-layer sunk by British cruiser. Germans defeated by the Belgians before Leige with losses estimated at 8000, but capture Vise. French Army enters Belgium. Many German merchants vessels captured. Moratorium extended. Colonial assurance of help. August 6-British cruiser Amphion lost with 131 men through striking a mine. 1100,000,000 war vote passed. Lord Kitchener appointed Secretary of War, and asks for 500,000 more men for the Army. Bank rate reduced to 6 per cent. Maure- tania chased by German cruiser. German attack on Leige again unsuccessful. They ask for an armistice which is refused. Losses announced at over 15,000 dead and wounded and 8000 prisoners. August 7— French troops capture Altkirch and Mulhausen, in Alsace-Lorrane. German troops enter town of Liege. Forts still un- captured. Montenegro joins Servia Prince of Wales and Queen Marv issue appeals for national relief fund. £ 250,000 collected. £ 1 and 10s bank notes issued. August 8—British seizure of South German Togoland announced French enter from Danomey. Admirality accept help of colon- ial auxiliary forces. Bank rate reduced to 5 per cent. Bill passed in Commons to prevent witholding of foodstuffs, and another intro- duced to provide building work for unem- ployed. August 9-German submarines attack British cruisers unsuccessfully, and with loss of one submarine. Another unsuccesful German attack on a Leige fort.J apanese fleet puts to sea. August 10-Austrian troops in.Alsace. War declared between France and Austria. French troJps retire from Mulhausen. Ger- man evacuation of Swakomund, in South- west Africa, announced. ■ August 11—Ten thousand German Cavalry reconoitre in Belgium Slight engagements. French and German outposts in contact along entire line in Alsace. Fighting on Russian frontier. German cruisers reported in the Dardanelles. Aug. 12th-Germans attack Fort Seraing, South of Liege, but are repulsed with heavy losses caused by Belgian artillery. The Germans leave 800 dead and wounded within the space of one square mile. Aug. 13th-Lord Kitchener appeals for new army of 100,000 men. Aug. 14th—England declares war against Austria. Aug. 15th-Japan sends ultimatum to Ger- many. Aug. 16th—Great Battle at Dinant, Germans routed by the French. Aug 17th—Death of Lieut. General Sir James Grierson from heart failure whilst travelling in a train. British Expeditionary Force land safely at Boulogne. British Soldiers sing Are we down-hearted ? No-o-o-o-o-o and "Shall we win ? Ye-e-e-es-s-s-s," and Its a long way to Tipperary," etc. when marching through Boulogne streets. Aug 18th — The situation between Turkey and Greece is disquieting.
