LOCAL FINANCE.
LOCAL FINANCE. lBy OUR FINANCIAL EDITOR. 1 CARDIFF, MONDAY. An average amount of business has been done in local securities to-day, and in most department a healthy tone prevails. Barry Mock, as far as we can ascertain, has not been dealt in, but there are buyers at 210 and sellers at 211. The new shares have been transferred at lOt and the fractions at JE2 2s. ad, and £2 3s, Taffs have been firmer, business having been done at 754a, and it is contidelltly stated in some quar- ters that as soon as the report of the investigation committee is published a substantial rise may be expected, lihymney Ordinary is still in demand at 145, but no stooli is obtainable. The Four per Cent. Preference has been done at 116, Khondda and Swansea Bay Shares are flat. The other business includes International Coal at 5J, North's Preference at lis. 3d. prem, Pennkyber Colliery Preference at 9, Powell-Duffryn £25 Shares at par, Central 11raving Docks at 47J, North Eastern 1876 Preference at 126J, Thompson and Shackell's Ordinary at G, nnd Hancock's Old at 20. It is too early to state definitely the suc- cess which has attended the floating of the Albion Colliery Company, inasmuob as the returns from London and Manchester have not come in. It is known, however, that in this district the shares have been applied for to a larger extent than was anticipated, notwithstanding the adverse criticism of some of the financial papers which were not favoured with advertisements. One paper in which an adverse critique appeared has been distributed broad- cast in Cardiff, but the effect has been rather beneficial to the promoters than other- wise. Mysore-Hamhalli Gold Mining Shares, which were dealt in to a very great extent here a few months ago, show signs of recovery. They went up from 7s. 6d. to £4, then 'dropped to 5s., and have now improved again to 14s. 6d. A special meeting of the shareholders in the Cardiff and Swansea Steam Coal Com- pany was held at the Cannon-street Hotel, London, on ;Satnrday for the purpose of confirming a resolution authotising the directors to re-sell the property to Messrs. Cory Brothers and Co. for £ 90,000. As usual, representatives of the press were refused ad- mission, and we have been unable to obtain any authentic report of what took place. It is stated, however, that the resolution was confirmed, the shareholders present seeing that if they did not adopt the course proposed I by the directors nothing remained but the winding-up of the company in the ordinary way. Those who are interested in the Severn Navigation soheme will be pleased to learn that the Cardiff Corporation, after saying they would never consent to lend £5,000 to- wards the work unless a clause was inserted in the mortgage to the effect that the money should be re-paid within a certain term of years, have thought bettet of it and con- sented. The commissioners will nolV lose no time in commencing the work. What they want to do first is to deepen and widen the lock at Gloucester. It would then be possible for boats of about 200 tons burden to go all the way up to Worcester before the other improve- ments are effected. The commissioners, how- ever, will find some difficulty in persuading the Gloucester people to allow them to deepen the lock until the whole of the waterway between that city and Tewkesbury has been deepened, so that grain cargoes can be taken up to the latter town. Two steamers are now being altered at Chepstow purposely for the "evern trade. lbey are the passenger Boats which the Great Western liailway Company ran between Portskewett and New Passage previous to the opening of the Severn Tunnel. The boats now belong to Messrs. Bland and Co., timber merchants, and the alterations which are being made will give them a lighter draught and allow of the funnels being lowered in order to pass under the bridges. Messrs. Watsons and Co., timber merohants, and the South Wales Publio Wharf and Transit Company are also preparing for the new trade, but have not yet gone, so far as to commence the construc- tion of suitable boats, as they were not certain whether the soheme would be carried out. 'I hey have conceived the idea of con- structing large lighters, which can be towed by cargo steamers up as far as Worcester. The busiest part of the year, both in the grain and timber trades, is from August to Novem- ber, and every effort will be made to get the lock at Gloucester deepened before next autumn. When the whole of the waterway is improved as set forth in the Act, boats of between 300 and 400 tons will be able to pro- ceed as far as Worcester. I he shareholders in the Milford Dock Com- pany have had their hopes alternately raised and dashed to the ground for many years, and we would not be surprised if they now refused to believe in any good thing which is pro- mised them. The debenture stock has fallen considerably of late. On the let of March it stood at 79J; it is now 75,a drop of 4. Some encouragement may, however, be obtained from an article which appears in the American Engineer. According to that paper, the Inman and International Steamship Company is perfecting its plans for the construction of two new vessels at the Cramp Shipbuilding Yards at Wilmington which shall surpass in size and "wiftness the City of New York and the City of Paris. The writer claims for the Cramps that they can build ships as cheaply as they can be built upon the Clyde, and that on his side of the Atlantic there are better workmen and more skilful appliances than on this. This, of course, is only the customary Yankee brag, but the portion of the article in which we are interested in this part of the country reads as follows:- The Ininan Line proposes to re .luce the crossing between this lonntry una zdgianu go live dnp. This has lh,elllau¡¡h..d t liS impossible, but it is one of the mi st practical questions of the day. Upon the route ai now run, pernaps live da) s Is all inip. SiLiiii),, but if the route is changed it will be fouud feasible. I'rogretsive staamsiiip meu who have studied the question ,ay that it is only a question of a short time when steamers will run from Now York direct into Milford Hiven, oil the coiift of Wules, and will not touch Queenslown at all. finch a route" ill result in the saving of « good deal over a day in arriving in London, With fist irain< the run can b, made in even quicker lime than between Liverpool and London. MHord Haven is said to b one of the finest harbour, on the Knglish coast. Such a change upon the Pit" of any one line would force other tteainers competing for the puoenger trade to follow the same route. This would be a jr at blow to Liverpool; but it is one of the puzzle. of modern navigation that the route to Liverpool from this country has been so long mnintained. Sever.i hours are always lost in the atop at Queenstowo, and then upwards of twelve hours must he added for t'ie Liverpool tun. There is always the chance of biing delayed there at the mouth of the river. The run 10 Milford Haven could be mnde dirccliy without stops and over a more s iulhor)y cojrse. Upon such a route the five-day paoage is absolute.)* ceitain." As the opening of a new route from New York to Milford has not been abandoned, there is hope for the shareholders in the Milford Dock. The Americana are very desirous of shortening the voyage as much as possible, and undoubtedly one of the best means to accomplish this object is to run steamers direct to Milford. The Great Wes- tern Railway Company may be relied upon to do all in their power to convey the passengers as speedily as possible to London. LOCAL STOCKS AND SHARKS. Advanced.-Midland Three per Cent.
