F16 ——————' Public Lighting in the Vstrad= j gynlais Council Area. j During the last few months malicious and serious damage has been done to the electric lamps in the Yniscedwyn, Penrhos, Cwmmaenfaen, Cae'rbont and Abercrave distuicts. i The Glantawo Electric Co. desire to make an earnest appeal to residents in these areas to assist thenl in maintain- ing the public lighting by discouraging and condemning the persons who com- mit such damago, and where possible, giving 41forination to the manager of the company Wl prwate). Ten shillings reward will be given for such informa- tion. The Company feel convinced that the largo majority of the inhabitants highly appreciate the great convenience and comfort of public lighting, as was fuly proved by the general complaints from, all classes when the lighting was suppressed for a time. In the com- mon interest therefore, it is nothing less than a scandal that a small num- ber of thoughtless and mischievous youths should cause the public such grievous inconvenience and discomfort by deliberately breaking the lamps and also throw upon the Company a con- siderable monetary loss. The senseless- ness of the proceeding is deepened when it is ralised that not only has the public to suffer tho loss of the light, but that ultimately the monetary loss has to be paid for by the public. The Sompany hope this appeal will meet with the co-operation of all well- disposed inhabitants. GLANTAWE ELBCTRIC SUPPLY I °0-»T4>TY. GWAUNCAEOURWEH
GWAUNCAEOURWEH PERFORMANCE OF. AERES MAESYKKIJN. A repeat performs\mr-e <x "Aeres Maesyfelin" (the prize drama at vhe Gla-nanims-n Eisteddfod), wa.s given at the Public Hall la>t Saturciav eveniug. Despite tho fact that nearly had already witnessed the j>erforn.ian<tfs d..1' '} 1 }' daring Christmas week, the hall waa filk-d to overflou-ing, giving ample of the inuner-st' popularity Ihi. new Addition to Welsh drama has attained. The urania is founded on the roman- tic; love storv of El in. Fychan of Maesyfelin, and Samuel Pntchard, ■on of Vicar Pritchard. of Llandovery. Facts-—and it may l. a little fiction— have supplied the tissue of the story. Though the v/uthor (Mr Rhys Evans, *v-hooliitast«r, Cwmgois-a), has been re- strained to a exieat by the of facts he has tato u the free- dorn to emit certain dis; (leasing lea tures, and to rearrange facts in insta-nces. Momavtj', he allows himself to draw freely upon his store of imagination. All th s the author has done without distorting facts, so that the ixioture wheh he has dra.n is ti-tio and artistic, and a vivid repre- sentation of the mode of life during the nericd portrayed. As act follows act, the characters come into ever closer tn-d more vital relation to the course of events, till at last the play is closed with Elin Frychan happy in the belief that her Samud is still alive and living her own ideal or <-cnniuct. The author has cut away in the last s viie all tho time-wom mechanical de- vices whereby the semblance of happi- ness is vainly preserver, and goes with open eves tt mtet a trial that has be- come inevitable. And out of this ( o I trial he emerges triumphantly. His •solu tion of a most intricate plisycho- iogical pi-oblem is at once hoth iji- i and a<.x?eptable What reallv hap pens to Samuel and Elin gives the lie to what we had at first imagiti-ed, and we recognise how poor and false our fancy was, and how much ti-uer and surprising the tilings that happen arc than the things we had invented. The author's surprises have a convincing quality,, a3id the audiejice watch the the events of T' al life, a-nd from their vantage ground as it were, they see •into the mystery of thl>n-<rs. Tho drama, lias infinite variety.— pathos, love, humour, wit a.nd go--A sense, h in tuni entrance's the aud- t- l;cop the interest unflagingiy the very^er.d. A-eres Maesyfelin is undoubtedly destined for a long and successful career, and will in tho near future find a warm corner din the dram at ic circles cf the Principality. "Aeres Maesyfelin" will be staged at the Cwmllynfeli Hall next Satur- day night, when the innumerable friends and patrons of the Welsh drama will be given: rare treat.
LOCAL FOOTBALL I
LOCAL FOOTBALL I At Neath last Saturday the boys of 1 h w l the Ystradgynlais County School played against the Neath County School boys. The Ntatk train was the superior in all ways. Owing to the Ystradgynlais team being two men short the Neath captain consented to their playing two old boys, D. L. James MM Eddie Morgan. Ystradgynlais kicked off against the wiud, 4ird in the first half Neath showed their superiority by scoring three tries, the kick in each ca.se going astray. Half-time srore was: Neath, 9 points; Ystradgynlais, 0. The second half was more favour- able for Ystradgynlais. The forwards continually rushed up the field to be turned back, and again, by the Neath bo vs. After one of these rushes tho ball came out from a scrummage, and James on receiving it put a splendid ckop kick over. Thus registering 4 points for Ystradgynlais. Neath again succeeded in adding two more tries, but failed to convert. At the nnaJ whistle the score was, Neath 10 jwnnts, Ystradgynlais, 4 points. The Neath team can be compli- mented upon their clean sportsman- like game. M. H. Jones, the Ystrad- gynlais captain, Gwyn Watkins, Teddy Morgan andf D. I.. James dc-servo special mention. A rkeik- last Saturday the Vstalvfera Schoolboys were beaten at Neath by the Neath Schoolboys. The final score was: Neath 14 ;x>intH Ystalyfera, Nil. Me sen.

-r- u I YSTSASCYKLAiS POUCE (iOlifiT. Thursday.—Before Messrs G. T. Stmk I (pr?idin?), M. W. Morgan, Rhys .L iJavi?s. L?wis Thomas. "T_ .í""t. I JrlK AMlr-M liKi l Mr. W. Jones-Williams applied for a full transfer of the licence of the Ancient Briton Hotel, Penycae, from the executors of the late Priacilla Morgan. The application was allowed. I ANNUAL LICENSING REPORT. Deputy Chief Constable Joite-i sub- mitted his annual report Li which it was stated that thciv were twenty-seven licensed houses Ill, the district, five of which were licensed for seven days, and the remainder for I six days. There was one wine licenct- and two clubs. According to the la;;L oensus the population of the district was 10,671. There was only one Ciisc of drunkenness in which there was a- conviction, as against 1.) eases last year. One lieencee was proceeded against and convicted on four_charges. All other houses had been conducted satisfactorily. -t h (, Mr. Strick eoncratula-ted the sutxm- intendent on being able to pre-sent such an excellent- report. Ho also con- gratulated the police and licenccos. and also the public for their excellent- conduct. He thought the regulations- had had a good effect in preventing drunkenness, and he had also observed that the war seemed to be having ¡c sobering effect—not only from a liquor point of vi#w—on the minds of the people. It was also noticea ble that during the two years before the war there was a decrease in the number of cases of drunkenness. He thought it was a good sign that the people were developing a sense of s?lf respect. Mr. Strick further said it was better to have houses over which the licence*" eould exercise proper supervision than to have large palaces of drink where drinking could go on without being under proper supervision. The law was made to improve the conduct and morals of the people however thii- might be brought about. He also noteJ that, generally speakinp-. the oor- sumption of drink, which was respon- sible for most forms of crime, had diminished to about one-seventh of the pre-war standard. He expressed the hope that the Chief Constable woukl be able to produce as satisfactory a report- in twolve months henc<». I WITH THE EXECEPTION OF GOrGH ARMS. All the licences were renewed with the exception of that of the Gough Arms. Ystradgynlais, which was left in abeyance so that certain alterations to the premises might- be loeked into. The adjourned sessions were fixed for March 14th. and transfer sessions were also fixed. I SCHOOL CASES. GwcnlUan Connick was charged with not sending her child to school, and she was was ordered to pay 5s. Mr. T. R. Joseph, Abercrave, proved the case. Tom Williams i p d iii Mr. Tom Williams appeared in similar cases when J. Macarthy and H-o ii rv Holwell were fined -5s.. and Griffith Griffiths ordered to send his child to school as soon as it was fit. Lydia Jones again summoned Wm. Rees Potter in respect of her illegiti- mate child. An order had been macto in Feb. last, and defendant had gone to prison on several occasions rather than pay up. He now owed JE3 12s. 6d. —a sum which had accumulated since his last internment. Defendant doggedly refused to make an offer as he said he was not the- laoier. He was again sent down for a month.
ANNIANFORD.
ANNIANFORD. -Synchronising with the shortage of llIe-at there have been depredations up- on the shewpfolds in the Ammanford district. A sheep was caught and killed on Cathilas Farm oni Saturday night. It was afterwards carried to a secluded spot, llld flayed and opened. The skin and entrails were there left behind, and the carcase taken away. Mr Fred Brarrdey, of the Parlia- mentary Committee of the Trades Union Congress, addressed a crowded public meeting at the Padae-ei Theatre Ammanford on Sunday night, upon "Food Prices and Monopoly in War Time." At the lo. a. res()btion wru. passed, on the motion of Mr T. Gib- bon Davies, seconded by Mr T. Dafen Williams, ealling for the socialisation 'of the food supplies, and the repeal of the.
