Mr. George Lansbury, the well-known social re- former, has been invited down to eon- fer with them. After the conference a mass meeting will lie held at 7 p.m.; when Mr. Lansbury and other promi- nent Labour loaders will speak. Prohibition.—A public meeting was hold on Thursday evening at the Gwyn Hall, Neath, under the auspices of the Free Church Council, on "Prohibition of the Drink Traffic." There was a large audience. Powerful addresses were delivered by the Rt. Hon. Lief Joi 10s, M.P., and Rev. H. C. Mander, Swansea. A strong resolution was car- ried "urging the Government to pass a Bill prohibiting the sale of intoxicat- ing drink during the duration of the 1. war and for six months afterwards." Sudden Death.—The death occurred with tragic suddenness of an old in- habitant of Briton Ferry, Mrs. Mary Jenkins, Lowther-street. Deceased had been for some years housekeeper to Mr Thus. Stephens, yard foreman of Messrs Taylor and Sons. On Tuesday night wlule sitting by the fireside she had a seizure, and foil to the floor. When piok<<l up she was dead. A11 inquest was held, when the verdict of "Acci- dental death" was returned. Women's Party.—The women of Briton Ferry are looking forward with anticipation to the visit of Mrs. Park- hurst, the well-known advocate of woman's suffrage, and the promoter of the new "women's party," the ob- ject of which is to support the Gov- ernment in their war policy. Ni rs. Pankhurst will address a meetin g of women it the Public Hall (m Saturday (Feb. 16) at 3 p.m. A full report of the meeting will appear in -tlie following week's issue of "The Labour Voice." Amddf,iit.-A serious accident occur- red at* the Eaglo Tinplate Works, Melyn, on Saturday. A youth named Wm. John, residing in Old-road, Molyncrythan, was working at the cold ioll.,i, and by some unfortunat" means one of his hands got into tho rolls. When relea&ed it was found that his hand was terribly mutilated. Medical aid was immediately summoned, and it was found necessary to amputate tho hand. Fatal Accident.—On Tuesday after- noon last an accident which proved I lat?d, occurred at the Melyn Tinplate Works. While Mr. Jankin Francis, rollerman, was at his work, his apron was caught in the spindle, and he was whirled round the machinery. Mr. David, roll-turner, who was near, went to tho unfortunate man's rescue, and was able to prevent his head from com- ing contact with the concrete fioor un- til the shafting was stopped. Tho interment took place on Wednes- J day at the family's burial ground in Cadoxton. The Vicar (Mr. James) offi- ciat-ed. T here was a large gathering of sympathisers present. Lecture.—On Sunday last at Horeb Baptist Chapel, Skewon, a lecture, for men only, was delivered on "Social Evils" by Dr. Williams, Cwmavou. The ¡ popular doctor treated his subject in a frank and able manner and oonvincod the crowded audience that in the in- terest of the future generation imme- I diate steps should be taken to eradi- cate this terrible evil from our midst. Gambling.—Numerous complaints are being made of the provvlence of gambling among the young people of Briton Ferry. It is stated that it is j customary for a number of young men and boys to meet together on Sunday afternoons and play cards. I was told this week that a young hoy lost 1:0 loss than t1 8s. last -Suuday playing t a game called "Banker." It woijld be) a blessing to the young people them- selves if the police were to take the matter in hand and prevent these mis- guided youths ruining themselves in this way.
