I Heroic Labour Unit. I FOUGHT THE GERMANS WITH PICKS AND SHOVELS. How a British Labour company fought 'the Gc.rma.ns with picks and shovels was related at the Glamorgan Quarter Sessions by Major Rhys Wil- Iia.ms, K.C.,D.S.O., of the Welsh Addressing the justices, Major Wil- liams said they had of course read of the circumstances under which the Germans broke through a part of our line near Cambrai a few weeks ago, but probably they were unaware that the Germans encountered at one spot a Labour company busy with pick and shovel. These men did not turn tail, but stood bravely to their ground. The whole company, indeed, turned on the enemy with pick and shovel, and joined with the Guards in a nerce counter-attack and pursued the Ger- mans back. Major Williams said he was proud to say that the officer in charge of the Labour company was .a Rhondda. miners' leader—Major Watts Morgan. who had been awarded the D.S.O. This was one of five decorations award- ed to the heroic Labour conipany.
