Swansea Rural District Council have granted their inspectors a war bonus of 2s. 6d. per week. Mr. Asquith has stated in the House of Commons that Lord Kitchener was con- tinuing the duties of Secretary of State for War. The Rome correspondent of the "Echo de Paris" hears from a well-informed source that grave dissensions have arisen in the German high command, especially between Marshal von Hindenburg and General Falkenhayn, chief of the Head- quarters General staff. It is stated this is the reason of German inaction for some weeks past.

By the way it is interesting to find that Llaethferch is having a busy season. She has five engagements to ful- fil during the next few wee ks, namely I Tumble, Gwauncaegurwen, Llansamlet, Ystalyfera and Porth. At the latter place, j where she has appeared previously, she was picked out of six tor the coming con- cert in February. I RHOS MINISTER'S SUCCESS. I At the Morriston Eisteddfod on Box- ing Day there were a large number of competitors for the best poem in memory of the late Rev. Emlyn Jones of Morris- ton. It is very doubtful whether all the tradesme* in Pontardawe approve of the application, judging by Mr. Griffs Davies, draper, of Bridge House, who has a card in the window to the effect that from January 1st his shop would be closed on Saturdays at 10 p. m. However, Mr. HuAs Davies, of London, who has been appointed as special commission, will be set rolling at 3 p. m.. and we understand that strong "teams" will be I present from Ystalyfera and Clydach. THINGS LOOKING UP. ) 1 A ine snooting range which was recently operjed in the old Bungalow in connection with the V.T.C. of Pontardawe, has I aroused much enthusiasm in connection with the mpvement in the locality. The range is being exceedingly well patron- ised, and it has been the means of un- earthing many good shots who would prove ot great value if sent to the trench- es. Captain F. R. Phillips, J.P.. is the only one who has secured a possible—but unfortunately he is over age. AT THE WORKHOUSE. As has been their custom for several years, Mr and Mrs. C. G. Gilbertson, of Gellygron, entertained the inmates of the Pontardawe Workhouse on Tuesday night. The guests had an excellent time for several hours, and they were not backward when the time come to show their appreciation of the kindness extended tc them. Mr C. G. Gilbertson made an ideal chairman. The programme, which had been ar- ranged was one of the best. It in- duded a couple of excellent piano- forte solos by Master Arthur Gwynne Davies, eon of Mr a.nd Mrs. Dan Davies, Victoria. Hotel; recitations de- livered in her usual impressive style by Miss M. J. Francis (Llaethferch), and solos and duetts by Miss Edith Thomas, Messrs. David Daniel and D. Davies. Needless to state they were I all in excellent form. During an in- terval, Mr and Mrs. Gilbertson pre- sented toys and sweets to the children who never seemed happier; tea and sugar to the femal e adults, and to- bacco to the male inmates. On the I motion of the Master, Mr J. Morris Jones, a hearty vote of thanks was ac- corded to Mr and Mrs. Gilbertson. I WITH THE MACHINE GUNS. I Private Arthur Williams, of Clyd- ach, who is now attached to the I machine gun section at Wokingham, was home for a fe-w days last week. He looked in the best of health, and was accompanied by Pte. Edgar Davies I who hails from Vancouver, but who is also attached to the same section. Pte. Williams was the Swansea Valley I traveller for Messis. Evans Bros., I Morriston, prior to enlisting. MEMORIAL SERVICE. Lewis, was exceedingly effective. The Vicar, in the oours.e of an appropriate salmon sa-id there should be no terms peace until the tyranny which threat- ened them had been finally crushed. Several Welsh hymns wore sung, and the service closed with the singing of the National Anthem. CILYBEBYLL FESTIVAL. J A musical fes?ival wag held at CIIybe?- yll Church on Sunday afternoon last. The I congregation w?u not large owing to the ) inclement weather. Those who took part i in the programme were Miss Edith ) Thomas, Pontardawe; Miss Dora Swain- I son (Alltwen), Messis. John Williams I (Rhos), and James Jenkins (Cilvbebyll). Anthems and caVrols were also given by the choir. Miss May Jenkins was the accompanist. DESPICABLE VALLEY THEFT
DESPICABLE VALLEY THEFT WIFE DEAD, HUSBAND IN THE TRENCHES, THIEF CARRIES AWAY THEIR PROPERTY. Woot must be described as the most despicabla and meanest theft ever re- ported comes to hand from Graigcefn, parc,o r what is new known as "the neu- tral country." On Thursday last Mrs. Griffiths, wife of Sergt. Gwilym. Griffiths, of the 6th Welsh, passed away afteT a severa illness at her home in Graigcefn- pare. The news vas sent to her hus- I band, who was at the front, but unfor- tunately he could not return for the funeral, which was fixed for Mondav The funeral was accordingly postponed until Tuesday, by which time he was able to return. On Monday night, however, no less than six ohickens, the property of the deceased lady, were sfcolen from a shed in the garden. The matter is in the hands of the police, and it is to be hoped that the thieves will be brought to the local court, where they should be stern- ly dealt with. —————- -————

DULAIS VALLEY.I I
DULAIS VALLEY. I Lance-Corporal Syd. Thomas, who was home on reave last week, has re- turned to Conway. He expects shortly to proceed to Newport to undergo a three week's course of in- struction in physical training. After- wards, if successful in his examination, he will be appointed Physical Instruc- tor. We wish him all success. At the Palace on Tuesday evening, another presentation of medals to re- turned heroes took place. Owing to the very inclement weather, the hall was not as crowded as it usually is on these occasions. Councillor Prosser was in the chair, and Miss Katie Griffiths and Miss Muriel Evans pre- sented the medals. Miss Griffiths, whilst presenting Corpl. J. Thomas (K.R.R.), with his medal, recited the following verse, and Miss Evans pre- sented Sergt. H. Llewelyn (S.W.B.) with his? Mae'n hen arferiad yn y Seven, Rhaid dal y drefn i fyny, I barchu'r "boys" sydd wedi bod Yn Ffrainc yn gwasanaethu; Ac heno rwy'f ar rhan y lie, Yn myn'd i rhoddi cerflun, Neu yntau hoff fathodyn aur, Ar fynwes mab Nantmelyn. Corpl. Thomas leaves for the front again on Sunday next. During the meeting, solos, etc., were rendered by the following :—Miss Lewis,- Messrs. Hughes, Davies, Williams and Llewelyn. At Salem on Sunday the half-yearly big meetings were held, when the Rev. Owen, Caersalem Newydd, was the officiating minister. His sermons were very much enjoyed by the large num- ber that attended the services. An interesting fact that came to light was that Mr Owen had five brothers (doing duty) in tliq King's service. Local friends of Mr A. S. Whittaker, the popular ex-manager of the Palace, will be interested to learn, that he has forsaken the ranks of the bachel- ors. He was married in London on Christmas day, the happy lady being Miss Kathleen Michell, of that same little village. They intend residing at Swansea, where Mr Whittaker manages the Theatre Royal. At Bethania, Crynant, on New Year's eve, the annual tea and eistedd- fod took place. The Rev. R. U. Phillips, B.A., was in the chair. The adjudicators were, music: Mr D. JeffreySj A.C. literature, Mr J. Mor- gan (Creunantydd). Keen competition was ths rule, and all who attended voted tllq functions a complete suc- cess. The following were the chief awards:-Opon recitation, Mr John John, Neath Abbey (seven competing) champion &olo, Sarah Blodwen Evans, Crynant (eight competing); champion recitation, Katie Morgans; chief choral, Bethania. The proceeds are to be given towards the chapel funds. At last a move is on foot in Crynant to recognise the services of soldiers re- turning from the front. Representa- tives of the local places of worship met at Saron last Tuesday evening, when Rev. J. Morgan presided. Godre'rhos was represented by Messrs. Morgan Jones, D. Owen, and J. Hughes; Zion W. Osmond and J. Starks; Bethania, Rev. J. Morgan and W. Howells; Saron D. Lewis, Roderick Evans and J. W. Davies. Salem was the only place of worship in the village not re- presented. It was decided to call a public meet- ing on Friday, January 14th, to be held at the Council Schools at 7 p.m. In the meantime, Mr J. W. Davies (Saron) was appointed to interview I representatives of both the Football Club and Drawing Committee, with a view of taking concerted action in the effort to obtain funds. The two latter bodies have already made a. start, and it seems now as if the people of Cry- nant are intent upon following the good example set them by Seven Sis- ters At Neath last Thursday, the marriage was solemnised of Mr Wm. Howells. Woodlands, and Miss Katie Harries, Gwynfe House. The bride was neatly attired in a blue serge costume with hat to match. Mr and Mrs. Rhys Davies accompanied the happy couple. We are glad to see that Pte. Tom Evans, of the Welsh Guards, who is home on leave is looking 60 fit and well. Much interest in, and sympathy with, Miss Gladys Davies, daughter of the late Mr Tom Davies, precentor at Saron Chapel, is being felt locally. Miss Davies, who suffered from knee trouble, underwent an operation at Swansea hospital during the early part of the week. From the latest repori:6 we learn that she is progressing favourably. Salem ladies have for some time past been engaged in making comforts for the young men of their chapel who have answered their country's call. Last Tuesday evening, at the invita- tions of Mrs. D. Daniel, Bryncoed. and Mrs. Dr. Edwards, a meeting of ladies of all denominations took place at the Infants' School. The meeting being for the purpose of forming a general sewing class for the locality, The Literary Society of Saron and Gedre'rhos Chapels is proving quite a success. Some very interesting and; instructive papers were read there on Wednesday evening last 'by the follow- ing :—■"Florence Nightingale." by Miss M. Davies, Nantrnarl "JosephParrv" bv Mr Roderick Evans 'John Penrv,' by Mr Isaac Curtis. Rev. U. Phillips, B.A., presided. All who attended, thoroughly enjoyed an ent ertaining and elevating evening. May the Society long continue to flourish,
