The annual election of committee and -officials in connection with the Nan.-Pol. Club took place on Friday and Satur- -day, and the results were declared on Saturday evening. Mr T. L. Thomas was returned unopposed as chairman and Mr H. De la Hay as treasurer, but there were ballots for all the other offices. There were three candidates for the vioe-chair, the result being Len. PRESENTATION MEETING At the Yjilsoedwyn Arms on Thursday -evening an interesting presentation meet- ing was held, when Mr Thomas Thomas, of the M'ners Arms, waa presented with j a specially cast medal to commemorate his plucky action in stopping a runaway honse and trap at Abercrave recently. "It was due to the sugeetion contained in "Llais Llaifur" -a. fortnigrit ago," said Councillor J. W. Storgan, "that I have procured a medal which will be a lasting memento of the -aplendid act of gallantry performed by Mr Thon-kas on that never-to-be-forgotten -occasion. Councillor Morgan went on to ..de-rib the thrilling scene of rescue, but before he was able to finish, his emotions overcame him, and there was scarcely a dry eye in the room when the worthy •Councillor -at dllwn. CINEMA The attractions at the New Cinema and Theatre this week rival that of many a first class house in provincial cities, and undoubted', Messrs. Edwards and Page are serving up "the goods." The Hod- gini Trio, consisting of two ladic-s 4aid a gentleman, give a. g-rett, gymnastic per- formance, including contortions <af a mar- vellous nature, and some balancing feats which are sr. daring as to be astounding. They perform a series of tricks on the trapeze and rings, and the act finishes with a sensational breakaway ladder feat which revolves ,at a tremendous speed, during which time one of the ladies per- forms some extraordinary contortions in the spokes of a ladder. The audience demand more Miss Maud Goodman, male impersona- tor, has received rousing receptions, and she speedily became a. great favourite. The Five Kels, direct from the Agricultural Hall, London, give a wonderful display of tumbling, contortions, teeth work, on the rings and trapeze, and their comedy is excellent. They have been compelled to appear again and again, after thunder- ous applause. The Cinema. this week-end should be too small to accommodate those who desire to see the finest programme I ever submitted in the Swansea Valley. "THE MIGHTY ATOM." I Alf. Jones, the weight lifting champion, of Ystradgynlais, w ho is more familiarly known as "The Mightv Atom" is to be presented with a bar-bell by a number of his numerous admirers at the Cillema on March 2nd, after which he will proceed to London to take pa,rt in the Weight Lifting Championship for Great Britain. The Society, of which Mr J. Evans, hairdresser, is the secretary, numbers about 30 members, but it is hoped that the number will be increased to 100 before April 1st. Application, on behalf of the Society, has been made to the Board of Agriculture and Fisheries for power to form a Board of Conserva- tors for the river from Abercrave to the confluence of the Tawe and Twrch. now tha4t the workers of the district have practically in their own hands the control of this fine stretch of fishing grounds, they should buckle to as one man, and do all in their power to make it one of the finest fishing grounds in the country. "I don't care," replied Charles, desper- ately, "I'll stop his srames even if he were your step-aunt!" ANTIQUARIAN WEALTH IN YS- TRADGYNLAIS AND NEIGHBOUR- HOOD. A friend, who has had occasion recently to traverse the neighbourhood, whites as follows :— "I have been much struck with the im- mense value of the antique oak furniture, old pottery and china found in the cott- ages and farm-houses in and around Ys- tradgynlais. It is evident that the owners of the goods have but a remote idea of the antiquity and value of what they possess, otherwise they would set a higher store on them. Some of the articles I have observed were rare speci- mens of Swansea and Nantgarw china, and I noticed in one case an old Old Swansea wai-e jug and in another case a piece of Wedgwood ware, each of the value of several pounds,—being used for domestic purposes! Is it not possible to arouse the interest of the owners in their possessions, so that the valuable pieces may be conserved to posterity? Here is a locality in which the antiquarian would revel. A BOXING ENTHUSIAST At the Neath Police Court on Mon- day, an Ystradgynlais collier was brought up on a charge of being dis- orderly at the G.W.Rly. Station. A ticket collector stated that after he had ordered some boys off the station the de- fendant interfered and challenged the witness to fight. Defendant stated that he ws interested in reading a boxing paper, and ha.d lost oon.trol of himself. The Mayor suggested tha.t defendant would do wdi to give up reading such literature if it prompted him to lose con- trol of hiirielf. D-fondant would have to pay 20. ai!(t costs or 21 days. CWMLLYNFELL I I THE BLACK MOUNTAIN COLLIERY WORKING. llie information authoritatively an- nounced in this column last week re- specting the recent acquisition by a London company of the Black Moun- tain Colliery created quite a buzz of excitement in the village, and the mat- ter has undoubtedly been the chief sub- ject of general conversation ever since. This week the colliery has presented quite an industrious appearance, and it is stated that already about 30 men are working on the premises under the guidance of Mr. Morgan, who has re- cently been appointed manager. It is stated also that some coal has already been brought to the surface, but con- siderably more work on the part of the labourers is required before coal getting must be started in earnest. Possibly a few men will be engaged in the work- ings next week, but at any rate it is anticipated that a considerable number of men will be kept busy in the course of a few weeks' time. TOM EN OWEN WATER. I I At last, atter several weeks' delay, the Carmarthen County Council have commenced the work of putting down the pipes for the water supply for Towen Owen, and there is now a pros- pect of the local houses shortly receiv- ing their supply of the precious liquid from the Cefnbrynbrain reservoir. Quite a small army of workmen are en- gaged on the work, and the district has presented quite a busy appearance dur- ing the week. FOOTBALL: CUP MATCHES LOST. As indicated in last week s notes, Saturday was a highly important day for local footballers, as both first and second teams were engaged in cup matches. The firsts played Glais away in the first round of the 1st Division of the Swansea Cup Competition, the teams having previously met at Cwm- Uynfell, and the game ended in a draw. On Saturday, however, the result was even more disappointing from the local standpoint. True, Cwmllynfell had not a very strong team in the field, but they were quite equal to the home side throughout, and they ought at least to have drawn again, if not won the match. During the first half the home side played fairly well and registered one try, but in the second, the visitors were keenly on the attack practically the whole of the time, yet failing to get over, although two or three favour- able opportunities occurred. The game thus ended three points to nil in favour of Glais. The Seconds met Birchgrove at Mor- riston, and were up against a much stronger and generally superior set of players than themselves. This match was the semi-final for the Swansea Cup Competition (third division) and after a fairly interesting encounter, the local players lost by ten points to nil. Thus neither of the Cwmllynfell teams have any further interest in cup matches. I MUTUAL IMPROVEMENT SOCIETY There was a large gathering of mem- bers of the Cwmllynfell Mutual Im- provement Society at the Vestry last Wednesday evening, when the Rev. T. M. Roderick, of Cwmgorse, gave an excellent address on Human Develop- ment, urging the necessity of cultivat- ing all human faculties, physical, in- tellectual, and spiritual. The pastor (Rev. D. Jeremy Jones) presided over the audience, and the proceedings were thoroughly enjoyed. I CO-OPERATIVE PROGRESS. Members of the local Co-operative Society will be gratified to learn of the great success of the past quarter's busi- ness. The accounts have not yet been audited, but we are able to say that the sales for the past thirteen weeks show an increase of quite L600, and it is hoped that the profits will have in- creased accordingly. There is thus every prospect of an excellent dividend. Mr. Owen may well be congratulated on the excellent results of his management. CHILDREN'S FESTIVAL. In place ot the usual evening service at the Cwmllynfell Independent Chapel on Sunday, a festival took place under the auspices of the Band of Hope, the members of which organisation contri- buted to a very pleasing and well ren- dered programme of sacred songs, solos, recitals,-etc. The musical items were ac- companied by Messrs. A. W. Thomas and D. W. James. The pastor (Rev. D. J. Jones) had charge of the proceedings and there was a good congregation.
