Afterwards he transferred to the Bursicni Port Vale Club. That was in the days of the Football Alliance. From Burslem he wet to the Newton Heath Club, now known as the Manchester United, which was then in the Lane a;-1 lire League. Subsequently he accepted an invitaton to play for Small Heath, now Birm mgliam, for wh:ch club he took part in all the principal comp -titions for some years. In those days Small Heath were the champions of the Second Division of the League. After playing for Reading in the Southern League for a sea-son lie returned to Llandudno, and threw in lÙ lot with the Swifts once more. For one season he assisted Carnarvon, and it was Largely due to his splendid play that the Carnar- von Club that season became the champions of the Welsh Coast League and met Wrexham in the .gcmi-final of the Coast Cup. In more recent years he has been connected with the Wednc*iday football movement, organised for the benefit of fhop assistants and others whose half-holiday is on Wednesday instead of Saturday. He was one of the founders, and in turn ch;arman, captain, and secretary of the Llandudno Corinthians Wed ruesday Club, and up to his death he retained the secretaryship of the North Wales Wednesday Football League. Mr Jones while at Small Health played for Wales against Scotland at Wrexham. II retired no year ago from active participation n the game, and a testimonial for him has been promoted in the last few weeks among local footballers, and was to have been presented to him next Wednes day at a whist drive in connection with the Wed- nesday Club. The amount subscribed will now, however, lie handed to his widow, who is left with children, all young. THE IHQUCST. At the Town Hall, Llandudno, on Wednesday afteiTKXAn, Mr J. Pentir Williams, coroner for North Carnarvonshire, held an inquest touching the death of Mr Fred Jonos. Mr Pierce Jones wits elected foreman of the jury. William Hughes, a milkman, residing at 19, K.ngVroad, was the first witns. He said that about half-pxst five on Tuesday morning he was proceeding down Caroline street when he noticed some object on the pavement opposite Llys Arthur. At first sight he took it to be a tree blown down., therefore he went along to his work at the stables. Later, however, the thought struck him that what he had seen might be a human being. The tone was nice and satisfactory. The dhir was well balanced and moved well together. The attack and finish were excellent, and the intonation very satisfac- tory. Ihcir style and conception of the piece were also good. As to the unaccompanied piece the choir had selected a much more difficult oom- petition, and more marks were scored on that account. They had sung as only W/cbh children could sing, and I13 awarded them 49 marks out of 50. The Rhyl Choir would take 47 marks, and the Monai Choir 44. The conductor of the suc- cessful choir (Mr W. Humphreys) was invested by Mrs Rhydwcn Jones. There was a capital competition for the Eng- lish recitation, "The Railroad," for these under 15 years of age, the first prize going to Master Howel Jones, Bagillt, for a very vivid render- ing, Master Percy Jones, Rhyl, being second. Dr A. J. Mr Rhydwen Jones' grandfather was a great literary man, and he was responsible for educating many young men as public speakers. He was pi -as d to find that in this case the talents and the ability of grandfather and father had proved hereditary, and that Mr A. Rhyd- wen Jones was a worthy descendant of those men (applause). THE EVENING MEETING. The second me ting was opaned with the sing- ing of "Aberystwyth" by the audience, Mr Bryan Warhurst presid'ng at the piano. There was a large gathering, and the proceedings lasted until a late hour. I Four parties competed for the duet (own choice) and in giving the prize to Mr Frank Nicholson, Gwespyr, and Mrs Lees, Buxton (Madame Gert- rude Humphrey s, late of Rhyl), the adjudicator stat d that their rendering of a love eorig was faultless. There were eleven competitors for the best brush drawing or pencil eketch of a village sccne, and the first prise went to Mies Mary Brown, Bedford-street, Rhyl, end the second to Miss Phillips, Ivy Cottage, Rhyl. Another novelty introduced by the committee "Was a competition on any instrument selected by the competitor. One came forward and gave a ")'I o fine (txr)7,,?iti f tft7? Powers of the mouth- organ, the second tried a cornct solo, and the third the euphonium. In dealing with this com- petition the adjudicator complimented the ooin- niitte-c on their novelty, and said that instrumen- tal playing should be encouraged. As to the lad with the mouth organ, he was somewhat sur- pri-e-d nt ",hit he h?qd e,4ozi,?, but I.,e felt th4at it was ability wasted. The mouth-organ was a toy, and he was aston'slied at the expression that a led could get. from it. Jones, Cyffdu, Blaonau hVstiniog, ard the second to Mr J. T. Levi (Cweledydd), Aberoraf, South V/ales. PRESIDENTS ADDRESS. Mr Williams, in his presidential address, con- sidered it a great honour that one who had beer in Rhyl for so short a time should be asked to preside at that meeting, as the Eisteddfod was an honourable as well as an ancient insfctition. It wa. really the Olvmpie or Grand Assizes of Wales, and had th- ability, like all groat tilings, to adapt itfelf to tin times and prrsont day cir- cumstances. Tim:; was when the E^tcddfod wnfi conducted entirely in Welsh, but that day they had the bilingual el ment, and it showed how well they were able to adspt their great institu- tion. The Eisteddfod was perhaps the only really national institution which existed tc-dav, and no matter where Welshmen Were located they man- figod to get up an Eilst ddfod. They had gather- ings of that kind in Patagonia, vther-e he hed resided for many years; they bad them in Aus- tralia and in the United.States. The usual tiding for Welsh men was (o first establish a chapel, then to found a Sunday school, and the Eisteddfod fol- lowed as a matter of course. He hoped that they would keep their Eisteddfod pure, and that it would always foster the best- that there was in mu) literature, and ajt. For the soprano aolo, "Solveig's Song," the prize was divided between Miss M. Owen, Towyn, Abcrgele, and Miss A. Edwards, Gronant, Mi* M. Williams, The Beehive, Ruthin, took the first prize for the best piano cover, and tho second went to "Gladys." For the best recitation of "The Tramp" the first prize went to Mr J. P. Jones, Bagnt, and the second to Mr T. A. Williams, Garth Mynydd. The quartette competition (competetors' own choice) proved very popular. The- prize was awarded to Mr W. Davies, Old Coiwvn, and party. For the best drawing of a bird the winner was Mr Harold Edwards, Bag Jit, and the second prize went to Mr J. C. Roberts, Penrallt, Glyn- dyfrd'wy. successful competitor for the tenor solo, "How lovely are Thy dwellings," was Mr R. O. Williams, Ffyanongroew. CHIEF CHORAL COMPETITION. There was only one choir for the chief choral competit on, "Piignms' Chorus," and the adjudi- cator readily gave them the prizo. They were the Ffynnorgroew Male Voioe Choir, conducted by Mr I. Spencer. For the challenge solo the prize was awarded to Mr Frank Nicholson, Gwespyr. A vote COl thanks was passed to the chairman on the motion of the Rev T. M. Road, seconded by the Rev A. J. Parry. During the evening Mr Frank Dickson, the Yorkshire basso, of Harrogate, was the artiste, and he delighted the audfe/.oe with his beautiful singing. '$>■
