COLWYN BAY. IN AID of the Cripple Fund of the W suite' and Strays' Society a recital was given in the Church Room by Mr John Astley, who -wa.s assisted, by Mr Edgerley Taylor as pianisit. Unf ortunately the aittends-nce was far fmm satisfactory. An elevating and entertaining progriaxamia was presented, the -well-known elocutionist being in excellent form. Among the items contribulted by Mr Astley vere "Euooch Arden" (Tennyson- Strauss), "The Cyniic," and. RAILWAY TEMPERANCE WORKERS. — The first m-oeti-ag of tihe session in oonneobioci with the local branch of the Loradooi and North-Western Railway Company's Temper- ance Union was held at the Lecture Hall, on Friday evening. SALE, OF WORK.—A sale of work was held in the Assembly Rooms, Old! Colwyn, yesterday afternoon (Wednesday), and was opened by Mrs Lloyd., Tanyooed. Tho Rev. J. Griffiths, in the course of his short speech:, referred to the great interest which Mrs L!oyd had taken in J.be move- ment. The proceeds were in aid of St. Catherine's Church, the National School, and the Men's Club. Mr Lloyd, of the Marine Hotel, on behalf of St. Catherine's Church, pro- posed: a vot-e of thanks to Mirs Lloyd. It was decided to hold the annual dinner at tihe Marine Hotel on Wednesday, January 11th, 1911. SMOKING CONCERT.—The first of a pro- posed series of smoking concerts was held in the Marine Hotejt, Oild: Colwyn, on Tuesday, in connootion with the Old Colwyn and District Agricultural Society. Mr D. Mac. NioOli, of Derwas, presided. A very good programme was provided, and it was a matter of regret that the audience was so smalll. The hard-working- secre- tary, Mr R. Mar ton Smith, deserves better sup- port in his excellent endeavour to further the interests of the Society. The audience war, however, most appreciative. Tbe items included sculos by MT Mobley, Colwyn Bay; Mr Del Pritehard, Glan Wern, Mochdre; Mr Ed. Davies, Mr Hugh Lloyd and Mr E. Ed. Ro- berts, Old CotLwyn; oomio songs by Mtr Catlow Old Colwyn., and Mr Nee*, Coiwyn Bay (whose rendering' of "The Weilshman in Lon<k>n" was as good can be seen on many a professional stage). Duets were given by Messrs E. Ed. Roberts and Dd. P.ritdhardi, and aJso by Messrs Hugh Lloyd and Ed. Davies. Mr Bird*, Colwyn Bay, gave several of his best recitations, which were very (highly appreciated. Mir E. FA Roberta, Old Colwyn:, accornpandod most efficiently. A vote of thanks was passed to the Chairman, accom- panied by singing "For He's a Jolly Good FefLlow." Thanks were also votedi to Mr J. W. Lloyd and family, of the Marine H who very kindly gave refreshments to the artistes for their services, end to the secretary. A very pleasant evening was brought to a close with the National Anthem.

Mr David Thomas, whoae success in the final examination of the Incorporated Law Sbciety, we recorded a few week's ago, passed with honours. He was the only Welshman to obtain that distinction in this examination. CHRISTMAS POSTAL ARRANGEMENTS. —There will be a general delivery of letters and parcels throughout this district on Sunday, 25th December (Christmas Day), with the ex- ception of those places which have only a three or a four day delivery a week. The public are invited to post their correspondence early during the Christmas season, so as to accelerate the deliveries. CHILDREN'S DRAMATIC COMPANY.— Mr M. R. Jones, organist of the Congrega- tional Church, has decided to form a Children's Dra,matio Company in connection with the ohureh "AELWYD ANG Il ARAD. "-Tliis popular Welsh musical drama was successfully performed at Rhyl on Tuesday night, by the Abergele Dramatic Society. The proceeds went to the funds of Towyn C.M. Chapel. Ellis presided over a large audience at the Ship Cafe lecture-room, on Friday even- ing, to listen to a debate on Welsh Home Rule. Mr W. J. Evans, County School, took the affirmative side of the question, and Mr Payne the negative. Part was tabem in the discussion by Mr Edward Ellis, Mr J. Wil- liams, M.A. (County School), Miss Gittims (Girls' School), Rev. J. Davies., Mr B. Cybi Williamg, and Mr J. H. Lewis. The voting at the clû revealed a majority of only three for the affirmative view. On the motion of Mr R. Percy Davies, seconded by Mr J. Williams, M.A., a hearty vote of thanks was accorded Messrs Evans and Payne.

RHOS-ON-SEA. OBITUARY.—On Mondlav the death occurred of Mr James Sugden*, Wllitehall-road. The funeral took plaoa on Thursday, at We-astc Cemetery, Salford*, conducted by tli,, Rev. W. Foster, B.A., London. Mr Sugden. had resided at Rhos about 20 years and was wefl-knowa and respected by all. He was a generous supporter of philanthropic and religious societies. Mr Sugdien was 78 years of age. HOTEL LICENCE TRANSFER.-On the application of Mr E. A. Crabbe the licence of the Rhos Abbey Hotel was tainporal-ily transferred at the Colwyn Bay Petty Sessions, on Saturday, from Mrs Meyer, who ha saidt had! been oo judged! a bankrupt, to John Stain ton, acting for the trustee in bankruptcy. Supt. Beresford said the police had no objection. Mr Stainton was a respectable man and had been practically in charge of the bar at the hotel.

LLANDDULAS. FOOTBALL.—On Saturday the LlandduAas football team viisibod, AbergeJø. wlhere they played the County School on their own ground. A splendid game terminated in a win for the visitors by 2 guals to nil. One of the Llan- ddulas goals was effected by a long shot by All. Davies. This struck the crowbar and was rushed in by T. Williams. The other goal was scored by J. H. Davies. PARISH COUNCIL. A meeting of this Council was held last wieck, when thete were present: Rev. Oamcm Roibert-s (chairman), Rev. J. A. Ehooh, Messrs Edwim Janes, H. Hughes, D. Williams, R. R. Roberts, and the Clerk.—With regard to tho drainage of sur- face water in Mill-street it was stabed that the filling up of the ditch caused the water to flow over into the Toadway. It was de- cided to ask the property owners adjoining to ro-nove too obstruction and repair the road opposite their respective premises. New sewer: As -noithing mono dafimite- was received from Mr Wynne, it was decided to defer the matter till next meeting, or sooner if an aaisrwer caane.-Iteforring to the question cf protecting the tm, oe-s in Doiydd the Chairman remarked that if it was only paying a small tribute of respect to the late Sir Alfred Jones for his generosity in giving and maintaining the trees till the time of his death the least th-ing the Parish Council could do was to speIDd a few shillings yearly in protecting them. It was resolved to engage a man to do the work. A petition was read from the shopkeepers praying for an early closcmg and a half-day holiday each woek. RELIGIOUS EXAMINATION .-On the last Thursday in November the Diocesan Inspector (Rev. J. Hamer Lewis, M.A.) visited the Llan- ddulas schools, and' the result of the evamination has just been received. The rev. gentleman's report points out that: "The boys are extremely w-eoll taught, and so are the infants by Mrs Jones. There is never any difficulty in assigning the proper mark to this school." Of the giirls' de- partment, Mr Lewis writes: "On the whole, I think the girls ought to bei classed "excellent" this year. Much careful and painstaking work has been done dkxring the past year." Canon C. F. Roberts, M.A., rector, commenting on the report in his Parish Magazine for December, says: "We warmly congratulate the teachers Upon thp result of their conscientious labours in maintaining the religious instruction at a very Imgh level of efificaemcy. Calling defendant's employer, Mr Cross, wit- uless obtained permission to search the bed- room, and he did so in the preeemoe of both. Under tbe bod he found a brown-paper parcel trod up, and on opening it he found inside the light fawn livery coat, which he now produced. Turning to Owen, witness re- marked, "WeD, what is this?" and he replied, "I bought that coat from a man on the road near AbergeCe on a Saturday some time ago." Owen said he d/id not know the man, neither had he soon him before or since. WitneBs then charged him with having stolen the coat, the property of a man in the employ of Mr J. Williams, Harp Mews. "Well," he roe- plied, "I bought it from a man on the road, as I told you." Bringing hrim to Abergele, he delivered accused into the custody of Sergeant H. Jones-Roes. Payment of members of Parliament was the subject of a.n interesting paper Tead by Councillor James J. Marks, M.A., at tho weekly meeting of this society on Thursday evening. In the course of his remarks Mr Marks maintained thalt the salary suggested by the supporters of this movement, viz., C300 to X500 was not sufficient an inducement to men, who were not actuated solely by motives of pecuniary reward, to give up their vcoa- tion,. Mr Sutton J-ones, on the other hand, contended that the payment of members would tend to eteat-a professdon-ailisni among a. body of men. who should be,, if anything, absolutely free to express tiheir opinions. Does she earn money as music teacher ?—She used to, but her health, will not allow her to do so now. Have you any children ?—No. Was this debt incurred in respect of a young woman, who gave birth to a child of which you were the fatheT?-Ye& And you agreed to pay the debt forthwith ?—It was a matter of impoesibiity for me to do so. I was out of employment or else I would not be troubled with the debt now. I paid what was due up to a certain time but afterwards I failed to pay on account off my being out of employ- ment. What are your wages?—After paying travelling expenses they are 25s to 26s a week. My wife pays tloo rent. Mr Evans Jones (to the Judge): I submit he should pay 10s a month. Defendant: It is clear tha-t I am doing my best. I should like to pay all my liabilities. The Judge ordered payment at the rate of 7s 6d a month.
