Banks, M.A., of Arnold House, wiho presided, referred an grateful terms to the priv-ik-g-e extended to the gather- ing that evening in having an address on on-e of tlie most famous cities of Europe by so eminent an authority as Mr Shaw. The lecturer, Who was oondially received, spoke (with much eloquence. He confined himself largely to the historical and asthetic side of ibis subject, and in a xaey manner spoke cf the remarkable influence of Daoi'te, Michael Angelo, SavanaroLa, and other Florentine leaders in literature, art, and thought upon the development of the Historic Oity. The Rev Canon Jones, M.A., officiated, and based his address on "The Com- passion of Christ for tho multitude." The result was announced on Friday, and Mr Thomas returned homo on Saturday. VICTORY FOR THE COUNTY SCHOOL XI. --The football eleven of the Abergele County School played the St. Asaph County School team here on Saturday, and the match resulted in an easy victory for Abergele, the score being 8—0. It was almost exactly i-h^* reverse of the result of the previous match between tlie same teams played in the Cathedral city some three weeks back. Mr Palmer, the new science master, who is a keen athlete, played for the home side, and scorod two goals. Percy Harrold was responsible for three. The reforc-e was Mr Alexandre. LECTURE. Mr Ifor Williams, M.A., of the University College of North Wales, lec- tured to a large audience at the Cafe Club on Friday evening, the subject being "Geiriau Llafar Gwlad" (Colloquial Welsh). "Lli.fon" presided, and amongst those who afterwards addressed the gathering were Sir Herbert Roberts, Messrs E. Ellis, J. Williams, M.A., G. T. Evans, and J. H. Lewis. A CHARGE OF THEFT. Dr. Peter Jones and Mr J. Duncan Miller, of Abergele, had before them yesterday week at the justices' court room a man named Thomas Hand, of Mount. Pleasanl, whu was charged with felon iousiy stealing, cn the 27th of December last, three sheepskins, valued at 5s, the property of David Edwards, Gaino Fawr Farm, Towyn. Charles Kemp, skin buyer, said that on the 27th of December prisoner came to the Abergele Tan- nery yard with four "kins, saying he had had them given him, and asking- witness to buy them, Witness replied he would pay the prisoner the m<)rn' following '119, and did io on tfic 28tit. Addressing Hands, Mr Duncan Miller explained to him the seriousness of the offence he had committed. The magistrates had no wish to imprison him but it jjras a sad case, and he would be fined 30s and 15s casts. He was allowed until noon on the following day in which to find the amount.

AN ENGINEER'S APPOINTMENT. — ::fr Gcthin Jones has been appointed to take charge of several new water schemes in Brecknockshire, and will leave next January for South Wales, where he has decided to reside. Mr Jones A-as for several years connected with the Dolgarrog scheme, and has a sound reputation as an en- gineer. PROGRESS AT THE ALUMINIUM WORKS The contractors have practically completed their woriv at Eigian Lake, and are now working on the Cowl yd leet. After the collection of water from the Porthlvvyd and Cowlyd valleys is completed, it is expected that there will be suffi- cient volume to generate electric power for the increasing demands of the Aluminium Works. The furnaces at the works are gradually increas- ing, and the number of men working on the premises is also augmented weekly.
