THE 'NAMAE ElStTEDDFOD ,L- ,(Continuatim froan 10th page.) Sir Prichard Jonessald it was obvious that the Welsh County Schools were turning out a num- ber of well qpwfcfrad mteliiggnt yooag men and women, viad pmblm of sooaring employment for them aecioas cowiiieratiorL The Cynunrodorion 1: jnust be aonaplimented upon the TWO VERY IMPORTANT MEETINGS arranged in ccstaeetion with the Eisteddfod On Monday ovcswsg they had had a very interesting I meeting, but tie present one would, he hoped, develop inw that would prove highly beneficial to sfttion. He had very great plea- sure in supporting the motion, and in thanking Mr Evans for his paper. Mr W. J. Gruffvdd, Cardiff, said that much of the information which Mr Evans Aid would cost £ 2000 could be obtained for a few shillings, and all the information with regard to the Civil Ser- vice they could get for a few shillings (laughter). Tho fault lay with the masters of the Intcr- mediate Schools of Wales, who should do more to help boys to sboure appointments. So far as he knew, not a single boy from the Cardiff In- termediate School had been helped into position in the direction suggested by Mr Evans. Mr J. WiBiams, M.A., headmaster of the Abergele County School, said he must challenge the assertions of the previous speaker, because he felt sure that cases such as he had referred to were in the minority. He (the speaker) could safely say ho devoted one-sixth of his time to trying to solve that problem. He had bought books, and had often written instructions, and sent them to parents in regard to the future of their chileimn-fhm- r, hear) -a. great deal of his time was given to trying to find employment for his scholars. Nevertheless, there was a great need for the movement suggested by Mr Evans. The Intermediate School system would never be a s:ieccs3 until it was crowned by something of that naturo (hear, hear). The motion was carried with loud applause. Thanks to Sir Herbert Roberts for presiding were voted on the motion of Mr TV. J. Evans, seconded by Pedrog, who bore an eloquent Welsh tribute to the hon. member's services as a poli- tician and patriot.
:¡. WELSH FOLK-SONG !SOCIETY.
:¡. WELSH FOLK-SONG SOCIETY. the annual general meeting of the Welsh Folk- Song Society was held on Wednesday afternoon, a.t tiie Church Room, Cohvyn Bay. The Presi- dent, Sir William Praece, K.C.B., F.R.S., pre- sided, the room being fdlcd with an enthusiastic gathering of rjtstedcilodwyr and others. The Secretary, Mrs Mary Davies, read the report of the work for- the past year, which ran as follows:— During .;he year ended Juno 30th. 1910, one hundred n-jw mem- bers were added to the Society, and che year closed with a Lliembership of 262. In June, 1909, the general meeting of the Society decided to admit life members on payment of one subscrip- tion of 5s 6s, and as the result of that resolu- tion nine such members had joined the Society at the end of the year 1909-10. It is suggested that the money received from life members be invested, and interest only be used for current expenses. Arrangements hayo been made with the autho- rities of the University College of North Wales to kocp the literature of the Society in the Welsh Department Of the College Library. It is to be hoped that in time a valuable collection of books and MSS oonaected wiSi the work of the Society may be brought together, and mombers who possess items suitable for such a collection would be doing Wales and Welsh music a service by contributing towards this object. :¡. WELSH FOLK-SONG !SOCIETY.
could also gwatiy help the work of the Society by collecting and sending to the hon. secretary any folk metodies or ballads or the names of collectors of such in their own districts. The balance remaining now at the bank in favour of the Society is £ 92." The report of the musical editor, Dr. J. Lloyd Williams, Bangor, was also satisfactory. He stated that the Society continued to excite inter- est in the collection and utilisation of unpub- lished melodies, and he referred to the fact that there was now increased activity at the Eistedd- fodau. The centra f interest had that year been shifted from Carnarvon and Merioneth to Cardi- gan and Montgomery, where Mrs M. Davies, as- sisted by Mrs T. E. Ellis and the Misses Davies, Plas Dinam, and others, had secured some inter- esting "finds," and several new workers. The President, at the outset of his address, proposed a vote of thanks to all the supporters of the Society, and especial mention was made of Mrs Mary Davies, one of the secretaries. It was two years ago, at the instigation of Mr Percival Greaves, that they had established that Society. The Sooifety had made immense im- provements since Ot was first lornioj, and he ilop-d that the rapid increase of meinoers would only serve to effect further isnprovem^ntb. 'fhere' was liie question of what they were to do with their collections. He understood that they were to be sent to the Bangor University, and no bet- ter place eouid be found for them. But they wanted their collections to bo supplemented by books and everything that bore upon the history and practice oi i oik-songs in that county (hear, hear). Reference haa been made to Mr Davies, of the Board of Education, and no one had done more for them than him. The step he had taken to introduce folk-songs into the education of their children Was an excellent one (hear, hear). He (Mr Davies) had really taken up the text which had appeared in the "Times," which had said: "School chiblren who will remain cold in the presence of ail other forms of music, take to the true folk-songs like ducks to water" (applause). No doubt, the speaker continued, the education of their children in music from the early begin- ning would lead to great additions to their know- ledge. Mrs Mary Davies then sang an old Welsh melody entitled "Y Golomen." Dr. J. Uoyd Williams, Bangor, explained that the air "Y Golomen," was first discovered in Festiniog, but since then it had kept cropping up in many other places. He had recently had it sent to him from South Carnarvonshire, where it was said to have been sung by a grave digger. Mr Robert Bryan, in the course of a few re- marks, said that as one who had been away from his country for some time, he felt that he had no right to ba there. He was very glad to note upon his return to Wales, that a great deal of work had been done by the Society. He had been present at the first meeting of the Society, held in Carnarvon, when they hafl first formed a committee to go to Harlech. At that time he had I. ver thought the Society would turn out to l* Mich a great success. They now possessed between three and four hundred melodies, many of which were of great value. He also was greatly gratified to learn of the steps being taken to introduce folk-songs into the schools of their country, as he felt that no music went to the heart so quickly as that of a folk-song. It dove- loped their consciousness of national life (ap- plause). Miss Jennio Wrttams sang "Y Deryn du Wn rhodio'r Glyn," which Dr. Lloyd Williams ex- plained came from wweral locawies, but was first discovered in Festiniog. Mr A. P. Grearwes then followed with an in- teresting speech. He referred to the signal sue- cess of the Society, and expeessed the opinion that there was a still richer harvest in store for folk-songs in Wales (hear, hear). He had first of aU been set to gather Wefth folk-songs for an English Society, bat he had soon found that the Welsh people were so strongly in favour of "folk-song home rule" that he had to tell tho English people to mind their owfri business (laughter). He advised them to look for Welsh foJk-songs amongst the folk-songs of other countries, as he was certain that a beautiful air, named "Kathleen." which he had come across in Ireland, was a Welsh folk-song. In conclu- u sion, he urged open them to revive tho use of the old Welsh treble harp. This harp he eon- siderecl was a much sweeter instrument than tho more recent instruments of its kind. Mr Powell Edwards then sang "Breuddwyd y Lfam" with great effect. Dr. Williams said with referenoe to this air it had been published along with the words many years ago by Ceiriog. Mr W. Llewelyn Williams, M.P., said that at the next Eisteddfod at Carmarthen, which would be the Eisteddfod of the century—(laughter),— they intended offering the largest prize ever offered for the best collection of folk-songs. He hoped the youth of Wales would emulate Ger- many, and rise to the highest pinnacle of musical fame, bnt he did not wish them to do so at the expense of the old Walsh music (loud cheers). Sir Marchant Williams having referred to the importance of cultivating the old Welsh songs in the schools, an excellent rendering of "Yr hen wyr mwyn" was given by Miss Jennie Williams. Sir Vincent Evans and Mrs Herbert Lewis also spoke, and a hearty vote of thanks was acoorded the President, Sir W. fl Preece. Mrs T. E. Ellis was elected as a vice-president.
