Ii; GEORGE AND DISTRICT I FLOWER SHOW. VARIETY AMD EXCELLENCE. THE COTTAGERS TO THE FORE. (From Our Reporter;. The St. George and District Flower Stow lias now beooai-e an estabiLslwd inatitutioa, having ri&eu from a very small beginning to ;I ;,I be ou-e of the most interesting on the Korth b ou-ill th-c m,).st ',in- Wales coast. Nut only is ius ",cope wide, but the fact that it is ii-ei-d iu the beautiful grounds of Kmine; Park (through the kind- E'Oss of Mr H. R. Hngheo oi jimin-el), at- tracts each year many natrons. The fifth unnuai show was h-eld yesterday week, and although tli-e weather was most unfavourable, th.s did not damp the enthusiasm of the cot- tagers, who turned up in large numbers, and th«» gentry of thj d.strict also put in an ap- pearance to support the exhibition. A large marquee waa erected in the park, "which afforded excellent shelter during the heavy showers which fell, but :1.b soon as the sky- cleared, the people roamed through the well- kept gardens, wnich, as in former years, were open to inspection during certain hours of tiLe day. Among those present were:—Mr Hughes, Colonel Hugh-es, Miss Fiare^s and Horatio Hughes, Mr and Mrs Charlton, Mr Alan Charlton, Mrs Arthur Toliemache, Miss Dorothy Dovereux, the Counters of Dun- doiiakl, Lady Maclaren, Sir Henry and Lady Norman, Colonel and Mrs J. E. MeJlor, Mr and Mrs Aitkcn, Captain and Mrs Laurence Williams, the lien. L. A. Broirick, Mi.-s Daisy Bvodrick, the lie v. T. and Mrs Jen- kins, Mrs Mason, -,v; Mio White, do.; Dr. Hep worth and Miss M«p worth, do.; Mr and Mrs Buxton, Colonel and Mrs Howard, Mrs and Mi&s Foulkes, Mr and Mrs Ilampson, Mrs CIbbo2. and iir and Mrs Joaes-Bate- man. The entries this years v. ere <100, about the same number as year, and no doubt the fact that there no increase can he attributed to the alteration in the rules dc- barring outside labour in some of the sec- tions. There were thiee sections. 'A" I>ein:j open to those who keep professional garden- ers and nurserymen illorists and fruifc-erers exoepfcedi "B" open to amateurs, who do not employ a gardener regularly; and "C," which was eonlijxd to cottagers in the parishes of St. (J-oorje, Abergele, Cefn, and Bodeiv.-yddan, who not employ outside assistance. In addition to the competitive exhibits, Mrs Aitkcn, of Bodolwyddan, Lad on view a beautiful and much admired col- lection of peony and cactus de.li'i-as. SuJb OF THE EXHIBITS. The exhibits in Division "A" were a magni- ficent lot, and although roses were not numerous the display by Colonel Howard and Mrs Walt hull was a striking one. In the herbaceous class, I Howard's collec- tion was more showy than it of Colonel Mellor, who was second; but the latter ran the hist prize winner very closely in the variety class. The phlox senna, seneeio cli- 'vorum, and the d;ll,y Bobsonii included in Colonel Howard's ooikction, were greatly ad- mired; and no doubt materially influenced the decision of the judges. Carnations vere ions a pretty lot, although display was limited. Miss May Lloyd ill tne "annuals" class made a good hrst. Colonel Mellor's bunches of grapes were Jtiae specimens, but his collec- tions of fruit were the centre of attraction. It is to be regretted that there were not more entries m this department, though it ■would have been more difficult to have brought tog-ether a huer collect ion. This "was composed of luuaburgh grape. Eclipse ru.-eiOil, VJillQIi-U peach, rapier nectarines, Deimidor superb P-Ullli;,iH'(J. Morolla chcr- Ties. in the class ior Hardy fruit, Colonel Howard again was the only exhibitor, with a hue dispwiy oi Victoria currants, Pitn-iaston Duehesse pears, Worcester i;varmin apples, and Moreua cherries, 'lukcn as a whole, the eshibits in Division B were a grand lot. The display of sweet peas in particular attracted a great deal of attention. Mrs Beckett's collection was a good hrst, while Mrs Calvert's "was a close second. A nice lot of dahlias tvere siio.vn, but roses suffered through tne lateness of the reason. Mr Gilchrist, how- ever, had a pretty lot. The specimen plants -were among the beet seen for some years at shows o. tnis kind. The collection of veve- tables bad been arranged with care. potatoes were clean and of line qoaiitv, but tnere was evidence of disease. Onions also showed up well, particularly the spring- sown, but not much difficulty was experienced ill picking out the first prize lot. THE FRUIT MCnUS. The fruit section was not a heavy one, al- though line samples were placed lxiore the judges. In Division "B" surprise was ex- pressco that cottagers should be able to give such a nne display, and in some classes tiiey ran the professional gardeners very closely. There is a decided improvement in tins sec- tion, and it is evident that the shøw is doing good work in creating deeper interest in cot- tage gardening. Potatoes were a credit- able lot; runner beans had been grown to a high state of per- fection, and other vegetables, such as poas, turnips, carrots, and onions were a credit to the district. Many pretty displays of garden dowers were made. The class for the best bouquet of wild flowers drew the largest crowd, and the children and their parents made straight for this etand direct- ly they enterod the tent. It really reflected credit upon the competitors that they could get together such pretty bunches from the "woods and hedgerows. The collection of sweet peas with which Miss Mary Lloyd took the special prizes well deserved the award, "while Colonel MeU-or's show of vegetables in iw Im a =-n,.ii the special class was a magnificent lot. A novel feature introduced this year was the special prize for the beet table decoration. The space allowed for the display was some- what small, and the competitors, who de- pended upon flowers in tall vases were at a disadvantage, as their displays resembled collections of blooms rather than table deco- rations. The winning display was composed of sweet peas, and these were daintily set out in dwarf vases, so that the effect was really charming. The idoo. is a good one, and no doubt in another year there will be more entries, as table decoration requires careful study and mature judgment. In the class for the garden with the best crops, although there were but two entries, the judges had some d.fficulty in awarding the prize, the winner gaining 176 marks, as against 174 gained by the second prize winner. The management of the show was in ex- cellent hands, and the hon. secretary, Mr Gilchrist, deserves all credit for his work, and for the excellent facilities he afforded tor recording the winners. The prize list was to nanU within a few minutes of the completion of the judging in each section. H. B. L. hughes rnado an excellent president, and took the deepest interest in the show. I^e judges were Mr Hunter, the Gardens, Coed Coch, and Mr Jones, the Gardens^ Hafodunos, both of whom did their work ex- ooodingljr well. Hue stewards were Messrs BecJccti., Edwards, Harrop, Blakemor-e, H. Roberts, Perkins, E. D. Jones, T. IWhcsj R. Hughes, and Bawser, while Mr J. D.
