PRESENTING THE PRIZES. At the close of the shoot on Saturdav, the prizes were presented to the successful com- petitors by Mrs J. R. Davies, Ceris; Miss Daviee, Treborth, and Miss Ha.mpton Lewis, Henllys, also being present. Colonel Darbishire, who afterwards moved hearty vote of thanks to Mrs Davies, re- «a.. --d' marked that it was a great encouragement to those who were trying to do their duty that the ladies of Carnarvonshire never failed them. With regard to the prizes, he pointed out that they not only representodi the shooting that day, but also a good deal of anxious thought and persistent training in order to enable the shooting to be done in such a way as to enable the competitors to win those prizes. The prizes were presented for the purpose of cultivating shooting, and now that the Territorial system had become more or less elaborate, shooting had become necessary for all young men, and the sooner they all learnt to use a rifle, the better it would be for them and everyone else. He wished to thank all who had assisted in mak- ing that iftiuual event such a success, the marksmen, and more particularly their new secretary (applause). Capt. Tuxford had performed the duties of secretary so; well that they were sorry to lose him, but at the same time, it was more than they could ex- pect for him to undertake the duties again. They were grateful to Capt. Davies for under- taking the duties, and trusted that he would follow in the footsteps of Capt. Tuxford, deriving the benefit of the experience which tho latter had gained. They were also grate- ful to the Sergeant-Instructors for their labours, and he urged the men not to be dis- couraged because they had perhaps not been quite so successful as they had expected to be. One veteran who had been to Bisley very often had told him that day that his son had beaten him—(laughter),—which proved that as men grew older their eyesight failed them, and it was for the young men by dint of practice and hard work to secure tho prizes. Th-sy must, however, keep up their musketry course regularly. The meeting had been finished in record, time, and he wished to express their gratitude to the ladies and gentlemen of Carnarvonshire, who had sup- plied the money prizes. When he told them that £ 75 had been distributed that day, they would re-alise that they had cause to be grateful (applause). Three hearty cheers were given for the secretary, Capt. Davies, and also for Mrs Davies, of Ceris.
WELSH RIFLE ASSOCIATION.
WELSH RIFLE ASSOCIA- TION. KEEN CONTESTS AT CONWAY. RECORD SHOOTING. The "Welsh Bisley," held under the auspices of the We-jih Rifle Association, commenced at the Range on tho Conway Morfa ou Tuesday. The obj&ob of the Association isI to promote the art ajid practice of riile shooting- in the Princi- pality, but) ki the past, however, it has not had tihe support to which it is entitled. The first meeting of tàro Association waa held at Penally, South Wales, in 1905, when the championship wa", won by Private Berry, of the 5th Welsh Regintaat. In the following year, at Conway, it was secured by Lieut. W. T. Davio^ the Queen Viotori-a, prizeman and; the King Edward priactman, aiter an-exoltin, tie with Corpl. Mor- ris. The meffting again took place at Conway in 1907, wiijeru the King's Prizeman of Wales was Corpl. Thomas LeWiS. In 1908 the Associa- tion went for a seoctad time to Penally, and the onampicsnsSiip w-is won by Lieut. A. G. Thomas, 6th Welsh Regiment. Last year, unfortunately, the meeting waa abannioned, but this year, how- ever, Capt. St. Leger Davies, tho hon. secre- tary, .succeeded' in reviving- tihe event, and al- though it was somewhat late in the year wlhen the aiinouncement was made, a. good pro- gramme was arranged with a prize list of about. £330, together with a number of handsome chal- lenge cups. The competitors numbered about 110, of whom with the exception of some 20 North Wales re preventatives, all are from South Wales or t'he border counties. It is stated that the neia- so.} why Norh Wales possessed, so few represen- tative is the inad-equate opportunities for prac- tice. Among the competitors were Lieutenant W. T. Davies and Private A. F. Berry, former gold medallists of the Association; Major W. F. Bell, Lieutenant-Colonel Sandeman Viscount South- well (captain of the Shropshire Yeomanry), Lin- tenant-Colonel A. Hutchins, Sergeant Pullon, and Sergeant Starkey, of Senghenydd, who has attended the National Rifle Association's meeting for the 29th consecutive year. It was a matter worthy of note that no South Wales Territorial officer was among the competitors. The famous old shooting town of Llanelly was represented by ten men, at the head of them being, of course, Lieutenant Davies. Two civilian competitors came from Cairo, Messrs H. A. Lake and 0. 1'. Long, of the Cairo Rifle Club. Captain 0. St. Leger Davies acted as the chief executive officer of the meeting and Colonel Hardy, of the Lan- cashire Fusiliers, as chief range officer. The former was assisted by Mr Hopkins, of Llanejly, and Sergeant Scott, of Manchester, a veteran of the South African war, who went through numer- ous engagements with the Black Watch. On Tuesday the weather was cloudy a.nd windy, with rain in the forenoon. The wind came aslant across the range in troublesome gusts During the day Earl Cawdor, the president, eent the following telegram to Captain St. Leger Davies from Cawdor Castle, Nairn:—"I hone you may have a very successful meeting. Wish it had been possible for me to attend." The re- sult of the first competition was made known as follows:— LORD LIEUTENANT'S PRIZE. INDECENT POSTCARDS AT BANGOR.
INDECENT POSTCARDS AT BANGOR. LOCAL STATIONER FINED. At Bangor Petty Sessions on Tuesday, before Mr W. Puglho and other magistrates, Raphael Lyons, picture dealer, High-street, Bangor, was charged by Supt. Guest with exposing for sale indeoent posOOards in hUs shoo window. At the outset Mr W. Rumsey Williams, who appeared for the defendant, intimated that the defence was that the defendant had not know- ingly expected for &ale indecent postcards. P.C. J. W. Joues (15) stated that he purchased certain picture postcards at the defendant's shop. They were exposed on the counter but similar onea were shown in tho window. Ihe cards were sold by the defendant's wife. Sergeant Griffith said that on two occasions he had -w-arwd the deiendant as to exposing the cards abwut whJch the polios .had reoeived ccan- pla.ints. At tlbo first visit the! defendant said he did' not see anylliing- wrong in the cards and afterfards he dealarcd he did not see why he shoull be stopped oelling them. Mr Ramsey Williams: Because they were büing printed' by wholesale firms ?—Yes. Have you seen any similar kind in Bangor and elsewhere?—Not the same as these. Do you know similar cards to these are being? • sold at Lkinduflno ?—No. Judge Bryn Roberts (who was on the Bench): If the Llandudno polibe and magistrates do not do their duty there is no reason v-hy we should not. Sergeant Griftit,had-d.ed there was always a. I crowd! of young women and children to be seen around the defendant, s window, especially on Sundays. lie considered the cards had a de- moralising effect on children who saw them. on(feuifc said he felt justified in selling the cards because they wcro supplied by wholesale firms and they were sold afc most seaside towns. He, however, was preparèd to destroy the cards if the Bonch were of the opinion that they were indecent and he would give an undertaking not to !0-U. any more of that character. He kept his shop open to do business a:nd he wouki not like to do anything illegal. The cares were not specially supplied to him. As to children crowd- ing round the window oci Sun<Lays, they assem- bled at every window wilih picture postcards. Mr Rumsey Williams asked that the 0000 shnuld b dismissed on payment of costi on a promise that the cards objec.ed to would be destroyed. Supt. Guest: You have been warned by the police?—Ye^, but I stopped aellmg. those cards majority the B&ach fined the defendant lUs aiKt costs and insisted upon on undertaking givon that the objectionable cards Should be destroyed: and that none of that character should be oold in future. Mr Rumsey Williams: By all means. Judge Bryn Roberts: It is obvious that such cards should not be sold. Mr Rumsoy Williams: They are sold also at Dublin.
--_-w- - WELSH PATAGONIANS…
_-w- WELSH PATAGONIANS ENTERTAINED AT ABEB- GELE. SPEECH BY SIR HERBERT ROBERTS, M.P. In the early eighties there left Abergele and various parts of Wales a very large number of Welshmen, with their wives and families, for Patagonia, and among those from were Mr and Mrs Thomas Owen, and Mr and Mrs John Evans. During their absenco in South America a large measure of success tlaS attended their efforts. They latterly decided to leave the colony and settle in Australia, a vi-sit to the old country being made en route. They landed in Liverpool in June, and have sojourned the last few weeks with their families in tiuf Abergele distcist. On Monday evening Mr John T. MillwafA J.P., invited the party, with their many friends and acquaintances in the neighbourhood, together with a number of the other guests, to a sumpt.,r ous supper at the Ship Temperance Cafe pflor to the party emigrating to Western Australia lit the end of the present week. The party ÏP' eluded: Mr and Mrs John Evans, Mary Evans, Edward Evans, Shou Evans, Mai-garet Jane Evans, Ann Evans, Ellen Evans, Elizabeth Evans, Catherine Evrns, Maud Evans, and Evans; Mr and Mrs Thomas Owen, Edward Owen, William Owen, John Owen, Robert Owen, Ellen Owen, Nan Owen, Thomas Owen; Mr ara Mrs John Griffiths (daughter cf Mr and Mrs Owen), Catherine Griffiths, Mary Griffiths, susan- nali Griffiths, Thomas Griffiths, John Griffiths (Holywell), Ellen Whitlam (Manchester), Messrs Ted Owen and Bob Owen (Mount Pleasant) -a Ted Parry (Jenkins-street) will also accomVA4 their relatives to Po;rth. Mr and Mrs Jones, the managers of the Cafef provided a coffee supper. The tables were prettily decorated, and the arrangements proved excellent in every way. Mr and Mrs J. T. Mill" ward and Master Norman Miliward, Mrs E. 11. Mill ward, and the Missus Millward (Sea Våny). and Mrs Henry Millward and the Misses MiJI- ward (Prcstatyn) waited at the tables, and the party, which pum-bere(i over a hundred, thor- oughly enjoyed themselves. Amoiig the glieso present were Messrs E. H. Millward (Sea Viewj> Henry Millward (Prestatyn), E. Ellis (BerthtopicV John Jones (Bodewion), Pierce Davies (GreeOf wich House), and Councillor W. P. Morris.
ADDRESS BY SIR HERBERT ROBERTS.
ADDRESS BY SIR HERBERT ROBERTS. Sir Herbert Roberts, Bart., M.P., who was ac- companied by tho Rev. H. Jones Henry, Brentwood, entered the room before the supper was over, and was given a cordial reception. Sir Herbert delivered a short address, in which he expressed his pleasure in availing himself o! the opportunity of meeting, on the soil of ilis native land, such a large number of talented and virtuous fellow-Welshmen from the Welsh colony in far-off Patagonia, some of them having been old neighbours of his. He extended them all warm welcome back to Abergele, and congratu- lated them very heartily upon the success which had attended their efforts during their absence (applause). He understood they would be lca ing in a few days for a now sphere of activity —Western Australia, a beautiful country, which I10 had himself visited whilst on hie world tour many years ago, and he could assure them that it was a very fine country. If they exercised in their new home the talents and virtues which they had exercised so successfully in Patagonia* they would achieve the same success as hitherto (applause). He was very glad to understand that they had not forgotten their old country and their old town; and on their return to then" native land-though there had been many changes during their absence-tho warmth of Abergele's welcome proved that their relatives and neighbours had by ho means forgotten them (applause). It was said that they had all more or less made their fortunes (laughter). He also at times felt he would like to go out and do likewise, but so long as his friends in West Den- bighshire counted upon his feeble services ai their member at Westminster, he supposed hi? first duty was to Abergele and Wales (applause). In conclusion, Sir Herbert urged upon those among his hearers who were about to leave the shores of Wales to carry with them to their adopted country all those qualities which had made them successful in the past, thus making the name of their beloved native Wales in iw best sense of real and lasting service to the life of the world. On behalf of himself and of Lady Roberts, he wished them all the success which their efforts deserved (loud applause). The Rev. H. Jones Henry also said a few words in Welsh. He understood the Spanish and Welsh were the main languages of the party. He had heard the Spanish tpngue spoken in Liverpool, and it struck 'him that it was with one exception—viz., the Welsh-the sweetest of languages. He heartily wished them success, and urged upon them, whilst learning the English tongue, not to cease cultivating the Spanish, and especially the Welsh language, in which only were to be found the sweetest hymns ever com- posed (applause). Before leaving the room, rousing cheers wero given for Sir Herbert Roberts and the Rev. H Jones Henry, and the hon. baronet thanked Mr Millward ior giving them the opportunity of be- ing present, and bade all "Good night." Tho Rev. H. Jones Henry also wished the party a bon voyage ("mordaith deg"). The tables having been cleared, Mr J. T. ttiU- ward took the chair at tho miscellaneous meet* ing which followed. Though the Gov- ernment were quite prepared to make a largo advance of money to intending emigrants, he Lit gratified that in their friends' case that was not needed, and he had not tho least doubt that Messrs Owen, Evans, and Griffiths would within a few months give a good account of themselves in their new settlement (applause). All at Aber- gele wished them every success, and that Heaven's blessing would always be with them (applause). Speeches were also made by Messrs H. Mill- ward, W. P. Morris, John Jones, and Pierce Davies; and a programme of Welsh airs, etc., were contributed to Misses Blodwen Williams and Hannah Davies (soprano), W. Pierce Mor- ris (tenor), and B. Cybi Williams (baritone). THE PARTY'S THANKS. Mr and Mrs Millward having briefly responded, the rendering of "Hen Wlad fy Nhadau" brought the proceedings to a close.
