THE LUNCHEON. A capital luncheon was smartly served at the Marine Hotel, where a numerous company sat down, under the presidency of the genial President (Mr Walter Whitehead). A short toast list was gone through, the naime of King George being musically honoured' at the call of the Chairman who, in the course of a humorous littla speech, appealed! for the sym- pathy of the Society in performing the dirties of president and particularly those of judige. He observed that he was named as one of the judges of the jumping. I have never judged in my life, said the distinguished surgeon. I can say I know one end af a horse from another (loud laatghber)., and that is about the extent of my qualification for that office (laughter). I hope I shall be successful in indicating whidh end is first (loud and prolonged laughter). I can only hope you have all enjoyed your luncheon and that your show wall be a decided success (applause). I am wanned by a very good autho- rity that those who speak least on such an oc- casion as this will be appreciated most. I will sit down (laughter and loud applause). The Vicar (Rev. J. Griffiths) in proposing the toasfcl of the President, spoke in eulogistic terms of the very great and valuable services rendered by Mr Whitehead to Oolwyn Bay and the dis- trict, Paxtioularl-y in regard to the Cottage Hospital and other institutions making' for the relaeif of siuffeiiiig. He had also been fore- most in connection with the promotion of the Colwyn Bay National Eisteddfod, the Gorsedd being- situated in his splendid grounds. And now, added the Vicar., we have made him a real baad. With nis bardic title of trPen Gwyn" he will be able to sing in Welsh ad, lib day and night (laughter and oheers). The t-oast was musically honoured midst much enthusiasm. Mr Whitehead made a most feeling reply in the course of which he introduced the per- sonal ehemenl in a manner that profoundly touched the company. TIié Rev. H. E. Mocatta submitted the toast ol-th-o judges, Mr Collins responding. of Mr Mac. Nicoll, chairman of the committee, was proposed by Mr Hugh Da- vies, Mr Mao. LLANDUDNO CHURCH SCHOOLS. MEETING OF MANAGERS. THE TEACHING OF WELSH. A meeting of the managers of the Llandudno Qhniroth ficttooils wast Ibeld on Taiesdiay when the Rector (Rev. Llewelyn R. Hughes, M.A-) pre- giikxl, aid the other members present were: Messrs James MoMasteT, Naiihan Jones, W. Eilis Jones, W. H. Jones, Miss Buckley, and the Rev. W. E. Jones (correspondent), together with "tihe following head tJc.adhers:- Mssrs J. E. Hartnsby, J. H. S. Steven^ Mrs Royle, and Miss Bajidord. A TEACHER'S RESIGNATION. A communication was head from Mr Noel Williams resigning his position as teacher at St. Beimo's ScfcootL A LIMITED CHOICE. For a vecancy on tihe staff, the forms of only two ajiplicants, one with a knowledge of Welsh and ttbe other witiiout, were received from the County Education Authority for too considera- tion df the maaiaigeirs, althoagii it was undesr- stood that several otiuersi had aent applioations to the County Authority. Mr James MoMaster &aid! that ho did no be- lieve in advertising- and inducing' ai numbea: o £ persons to apply and then oontining' the> aoloo- tkxn of the managers to only two. He thought they ahould kick against such a thing- Mr W. ECiis Jones aaked whetbeir tibe Educa- tion Committee would igoit pay the expenses of sum of the applicants to have aji interview with ,the =amageis? The Rector replied thet it was no use asking thean, as they did not want the managers to have too much to do with the appointments. They imagined! they oould make) better appoint- men.ts themselves. Mr W. Efliis Jones said that with such a limi- ted. choice, they oouldi not be sttre whether the teacher appointed would prove successful or not. It was resolved that the correspondent aboiekl inform, the County Authority that the managers felt dissatisfied sfr receiving sudh, a limited num- beir of applications to select from. THE TEACHING OF WELSH. Mr James MoMastar asked wise thee, a know- ledge of Welsh was imperative ? The Rector: Tie only place where yon. get good Weisli in this parishis at Bodafon. Mr W. H. Jones said thai every einoourage- ment should begiren the beaching1 cd Welsh, ee- peoiaility in the sdhools on the Great Orme. Mr James MoMaster: Have we mo power to advertise ourselves? I-h* Roetor: Nub tfhey take that authority from us, although we know better thaai they wthat we require. Mr W. ElSs Jones asked how much timej waa givero to the teaching of Weleh? Mrs Royle replied that two hours a week were given to the teaching- of Welsh in her school. The Reobor said that he quite agreed with What Mr W. H. Jones had said, but at the same time he thought a great deal of time was wasted over tibe teaching of Welsh in a place like Llandudno. They held W dsh services on fifoo Orme, but could not get the children, to read in Welsh. Mr W. U. Jcnes: How cam you expect &em to do so, if they are not taught in the schools. My preference is for the applicant with a knowledge of Welsh. Mr J. MoMaster agreed that there was a gioad deal im what Mr Jones 4aid especially when they considered, that twenty-five minutes a day bad to be given to th teachmg of Welsh according to the regulations. Mr W. Ellis Jones: But you don't want two teachers for that. Mr W. H. Jones proposed that if Miss Brown could not accept the appointment the post be offered to Miss Davies, the Wedsth applicant. Mr Nathan Jones seoonded, and, said that be quite agreed with wihat Mr Jones had said- It was eventually decided to appoint Misa Leonora Emily Brown, of Kidderminster, to the post, her qualifications being insidh superior to any of the, others. RELIGIOUS INSTRUCTION. The reports of the Diooesan Inspector upon tibe religious instruction given in the various sdhools "were read as foeowe:- St. George1 s School: This is a most excellent school. Good woork had been done in every group, thougfti the second was a little weak in some subjects. The lowest group did well, and the highest would stand comparison, with the highest in almost any school. It oaataiued1 a hrsgiht set of children well taught. Thd grngmg1 was nice and sweet, a.nd the pointing in the chanting- was gbod and natural, St. George's Infants' School: The bead- mM-ress was unfortunately absent through ill- new whien the school was inspected, but the. results show that good And oaieful work had been done in the religious subjects. The upper group was very well up in the work, and the lower did fairly well. The recitation of the Lord's Prayer and! Creed after the teacher was agreeable* Bodaiotn School: The singing of the mixed school was good. The wording- inj rika-nring- was caear and distinct, and in the hymns the altos sounded well. The first hymm of the infants was omffo rtaTiafeHy pJfcchedl too h(i(gh. It was evi- dent that great pains had been taken with the religious instruction in both departments; l-ut. a little more time might be spent on BihlicaJ hiistory and1 a little lbss in committing verses to memory in the infant sdbool. There had been an endeavour to do too much of the latter, at the expense, to some extent, of the former. The rest of the school, and more especially group m. did much better than when I examined the school two years ago. I was glad also to find that far more cihildren had taken the catechism this time than last. The "Repetition" of the infants was very distinct. The same may be Baid of GrIoup I. Si. Beam's I&and School: This infant school is well conducted. The Prayers were nicely said in a subdued tome, and the singing was not forced. TSbsei w<xrik specified an the "cardf" hadi been attended! to. The children Should be enoouraged to gpeak out in answer- ing. It would be better also to divide the child- ren into two classes; andi state distinctly on the card the subjects each class fe to be examined in. Then at report would be given odj the profi- ciency Of each class separately. The Rector said that the reports were as usual very good. THE HOLIDAYS. It was resolved that the schools be closed for the summer holidays on J'tlly 22nd for five weaa

;> TREASURE HUNT AT LLANDUDNO. ROMANTIC SEARCH FOR LOST BULLION BOAT. A seaaxih was cominenoed in the sea near the Great Orme, Llandudno, an Tuesday rooming, for gold amounting to £ 60,000 wihich is said to have been buried beneath the waves since the wreck of the Hornby Castle in 1824. The Hornby Castle was a Liverpool brig, bound from Liverpool to Rio de Janeiro with a general cargo, including the bullion- On Janu- ary she was blown out of her course during a terrible gale, and about midnight was dashed agajast the rocks of the Great Orme, near the spot where the present lighthouse stands. With the exception of one sailor every rnan was drowned, litis man had a miraculous es- cape. When the vessel struck the rocks, which rise to a height of 100 feet, he was on the bow- sprit of the brig, and was thrown, on to a nar- row shelf of rock, where he lay unconscious. On recovering he clambered! to the top, and1 reaching a blacksmith's; shop at the copper urines, told his story to the sceptical smith. In the morning, however, the miners were oon- vinced by the wreckage that the story was true. The search is being made by Mr John Gibpey. of Liverpool, in the salvage steamer Lady Kate. It beg'an in the early hours of the morning, under his direction and the gTajodsoii of a. rna-n wiho had been shown the exact spot where tDe brig struck. The divers worked, for some hours, but did not succeed in locating- the wreck. CORRESPONDE N- CE.I I
CORRESPONDE N- CE. LLANGWSTENIN PARISH. (To the Editor of the "Pioneer."J Sir,-The proposal to divide the parish of Liang-wstenin (which includes Llandudno Junc- tion) into wazds was considered at a meeting held at Bryn Pydew. As one of the heaviest ratepayers atJ Llandudno Junction, I ahoudd like to cau attention to the manner in which at the Junction are treated by the Pari&b Coun- oil. In the first place, I was surprised to learn that the ratepayers were not aware of the pro- posed changes, and complaints have been made that before voting on such an important question a general meeting should have been called to fully explain the position to the ratepayers. At the meeting- at Pydew questions were asked as to how the parish would benefit by the change if carried out, and the only reply received was that it would emtail a bttle extra expense at election times, and for that reason it was de- cided, by a majority of 2 votes, to leave things as they are. I confidently maintain that the parish would nizuteriaily benefit in various ways by the pro- posed division. Our pariak contributes in rates over £ 3,000. We have a number of workmen's dwelling's at the Junction with rateable values varying from L6 to JB16, and also shops with an average rental of JE25 which are paying 78 in the £ rate. At the Junction we have hydrants provided, and a good supply of water suitable for fire extingtnshing appliances, and the last Council a rate and collected fZO for the purchase csf such appliances, bat when the pre- sent Council came into power they decoded to utilise that mcney for other purposes, thus en- tirely ignoring the wiabee of their predecessors. The only defence to such an unpreoencfented action was that the people or the Junction should insure their proporties against lose by file. 1 would ask my tobow ratepayers if this j .{; ,1' is just and fair, and how long are we, the ratepaymg portion of the parish, to acquiesce in the procedure of the Pao-iili Council ? We have the alternatives, to apply to the Local Goveirmmeait Board to be allowed to govern our- selves by means of an Urban District Council or to become annexed to the Borough of C gn way. Which shall we adopt?—I am, etc., I 1, Tynyfron, JOHN HUGHES. Llandudno Junction.

Jones, LLangwstenin; Mr F. V. Grange, Alvaston, Nantwich; Mr T. W. Milling, Lud- ham House Stables, Ghesber; Mr Alfred 0. Davies, Machynlleth; and Mr John Roberts, Regent House, Beaumaris, turning out be- fore a large ring of spectators. One of the few things to mar the show arrangements was the unconscionable delay in judging the turn-outs and jumping, and the judges were less at fault than the ring stewards. It was six o'clock before the judging was over, and but for the snapping of the wooden pole at the bar jump, it is probable that another half-hour would have gone before the close. In the first round, there was some fine, clean work by Mr Grange's horse and Mr Alfred Davies' "Nomination," but in the second round the latter dropped several points at two of the obstacles. The first prize was well won by Mr Grange, the eeoond fell to Mr Alfred Davies, the third to Mr T. W. Milling, and the fourth to Mr J. Roberts. RUNAWAY SMARTLY CHECKED. While the judging -was in progress, a horse attached to a water van (used to make up the water jump), bolted, and, despite the plucky efforts of several men to stop it, dashed in the direction of the field entrance. OMUiHderable excitement prevailed for a few seconds, and it was foarod that the lives-of a crowd of persons in the gateway were in l&angier} PortunateJy, P.O. Rowlands, of Llandaulaa, effected a very smart capture in the nick of time, though not before one man had been bowled over—luckily with no Hi- result. The officer was congratulated upon his courageous and prompt action.
