THE TDWYN" UHUECH bCHOOL. FURTHER QUESTIOIIJS iN PARLIAMENT. THE BOARD OF EDUCATION AND THK SCHOOL GRANT. In the IJooji-e of Commons, on Monday, Mr Orrasby-Gore asked the President of the Board of Education whether any piwis ou is mad-o by the Merionethshire local cduoaiiou authority for the inspection of the chaldron m elementary Gciuicil £ ohoo>i^ in the county of Merioneth in the religious, syilabus i;fucd by lite authority for the gail-danee- of teachers; if so, who the inspectois arc; and, if. thr. of there being no inspection in reiig:oa- cubi ?cts, what means arc there for ascert t.jiing that re- ligious instruction is being competent'/ given [I alt the elementary schools provided by the Mer- ionethshire education authority. Air Ihmclman: I have no riformat 'on on any of the points referred to in the question. Mr Ormsb.y-Gore a iked the President of the Board of Education vdiat is the earliest (late at which he will consider xeprcseutations from the mana.gersi of tho Towyri Church SchooJ urging the renewal of the former grant, now ceased: and "whether, in view of the fact that the man- agers arc maintaining- the school at the.- own expense, including a new fully qualified teacher, who commenced work on Monday last, and in view of the fact that mono than fifty chiidrc-n are daily attending the school, he vvitl.l! reoom- meinso recognition of school at an early date. Mr Runciman It is open to any persons at any time to give notice under section 8 of the Education Act, 1902, of their inteffition to provide a new school, and should any appeal be presen- tod against the proposal it will bo the duty of the Board of Education to decide the appeal. The school in question 0011 Id only be pl-aoed an the grant I],t subject to the iscjue of notices un- der section 8, which must run for three months. It is quite impoi-ilblo for me to an^cijxrte the decision of the Board on any such propo. al._ In reply to Mr CSoaii/h, Mr Runciman wa-id the Towyn Church school appears to have been placed on the list of public elementary schools earning annual grant in the year 1874. The school appears in part to be governed by a deed of the 9th Jarmiary, 1861, and in part to bo affected by the trusts of a freo schooJ .-uppo:ed to have been established in or about the year 1717 bv Yinocnt Corbett. The deed of 1861 do- lares it to ba a. fund-siti,ntal the Bible be read d-aiiy in the school, and tne Cate- chism. of the Church of England lie taught to all c children educated free under Lady M-ev-er's en- dov.nicmt, and to any other children whosa parents do not object, and that the vicar shail be superintendent of tho moral and reiigiou-i iin- Pi.i-uotion of suoh of the children as shall be educated. Tho seliool appears to ba in receipt of £ 4 poer annum from Corbott's Charity, 11 guineas per ainvam from Lady Meyer' gift, and JEO 45 6d from Lewis Lloyd's charity. No action had be-Pn taken under the Education Act. 1902, with regard to the'-x; endowments, which do not appear to be subject to tho operation of the pro- viso to section 13 of that Act. A f-oheme has been prepared' with regard to the last-mentioned charity under the Welsh. Intermediate Education Act. 1889.

From the report presented by the direc- tors to the shareholders, on Friday, it ap- pears that the Manchester and Liverpool Dis- trict Banking Company have enjoyed another profitable liaif-year. The report read by the Chairman of the directors, Sir Edward Don- ne r, was as follows — The directors have to report that the gross profit for the half-year ending 30th June last, after making provision for bad and doubtful debts, is < £ 2^8,924 17s 2d to which has to be added the amount brought forward from 31st December la.st, viz., X57,993 168 8d; making £ 350,918 13s lOd. From this sum the ing deductions have to be ra«ade :—Total ex- pensea at the Head Office, London Office, and I branches, including salaries, stationery, in- come tax, etc., £ 114,547 15s 9d leaving a rett profit of £ 242,370 188 Id. The directors re- commend the declaration of a dividend of 21s per share, which will take leaving a balance of E7,3,470 18s Id. Of this, it is pro- posed to carry to the Reserve Fund < £ 10,000; to Pension Fund, < £ 5000; and to next account, .61,470 18s Id; making a total of < £ 76,70 18s Id. WISDOM FOR WOMEN.
WISDOM FOR WOMEN. There is a ridiculous old saying to the effect that "A Woman's Work is Never Done." That saving may have been reasonable in olden times when household appliances and methods were primitive and ineffective. But in these modern days, when there arc at woman's command a thousand and one contrivances for saving house- hold labour, there is no excuse for her if she neglects to avail herself of the leisure and com- fort which are hers for the seeking. The wise woman is tho one who so systematically ar- ranges and accomplishes her work that she has ample leisure to enjoy her life naturally and healthfully. Scrubbing and scouring, sweeping and dusting are necessary matters, but they are now bereft of tho' labour once imperative. Sweeping the carpet, for instance, need no longer be the back-breaking, dust-raising, temper-trying ordeal of tho past. By using the Ewbank the sweeping of a carpet becomes more of a pleasure than a task. The ingenious little machine acts like magic in its work of completely freeing the carpet from Just and dirt. The Ewbank moves swiftly and silently over the floor, propelled merely by a touch, because the brush has attach- ed to it 11 ball-bearing arrangement resembling that on a perfect bicycle. Moreover, the Ew- bank is quite distinct from any other class of carpet sweeping contrivance, for the reason that it possesses rubber buffers which render even the slightest injury to furniture or wall decoration impossible. These rubber buffers ere detachable at will, and may be purchased separately. Ask your dealer to show you the Ewbank and give you a list of stylos and priccs. 28069p

Police Constable Powell, of Ll.n- tysiiio, was present, and also received the congratulations of the committee, he having been honoured by the King for conspicuous bravery. Major LcadbetW, i*i returning thanks, eaid that he had tried to do his duty to the best of his ability for the past 30 years, and it seemed that he had pleased the authorities in London. However, what he was most proud of during his long experience was the fact that the men under his charge bad done everything he could have wished, and it was duo to them that the police force in Den- bighshire was efficient. He was proud to welcome I'.C. Powell, who had received the medal for conspicuous bravery. P.C. Powell was then called into the room, and Avarmjy congratulated by the Chairman and committee. THE ASSIZE ARRANGEMENTS. were accepted for carry out certain proposed alterations to the County i Hall at Ruthin. Mr Boaz Jones seconded the motion, which was carried. CHIEF CONSTABLE'S REPORT. The quarterly report of the Chief Constable stated that crime and offence as compared with the corresponding period of last year showed a doorcase of nine in the indictable olienoes, and decrease of X13 17s Sd in the value of property stolen. Forty-nine in- dictable offences were reported during the quarter, and 33 persons were proceeded against, 19 of whom were summarily con- victed, and six committed for trial. Three hundred and eiglity-four persons were pro- cecded against for non-indictable offences, 225 of whom were fined, and GO committed to gaol. EXTRA CONSTABLES. The Chief Constable was given authority to appoint two extra constables to be stationed at Cerrigydrui-dion and Llanfi- hangel in consequence of the Birkenhead Water Works. The extra oost wiU be borne by the Corporation. THE LLYSFAEN DIFFICULTY. The Clork reported that the Local Govern- ment Board had declined to make a pro- vincial order in the matter at Llysfaen. Den- bighshire was at present policing this dis- trict, and whether they were doing so under a very valid agreement wa.s doubtful to him. The matter was referred to the committee with the Chief Constable added to .it. COMPLETED SERVICE. It waa reported1 that Supt. CHIEF CONSTABLE AND THE METHOD- IST ASSEMBLY. A resolution passed by the Welsh Calvinistic Methodists' General A aembly, which met re- cently at No; tli, was read, caJiijig attention to the grout disparity between the number of per- sons convicted of drunkennetss and the number of publican-, prcocodod ag-ainst for rcrmitting; druryk-ennciss, and as-icing the committee to take actiiou in the matter. Asked his views on the subject, the Ch'ef Constable -said this was now adnrost a hardy annual. It comes up periodically, but the gen- tlemen who pa«-eed such raJohiticaia did not seem to be aware of the existence of social clubs, ovct which the pokes hlet no control, whatever. The disparity mentioned no guide toO the true state of things, as pecoslo seen drunk on the e'jreet very often got VoCir drinK at piaoes other than publ' houeo- It would be far bettca- if I re okiticn-i were pa-ecd in favour of giving tho police greater control over clubs. Mr Gomor Roberts (Llanelidaii) said he agreed with the, Chief C-onstab'e. At the same time there were but few dubs in Denbighshire, if the Wrexham district ivae, excluded. ThoNe was a great disparity in the matter mentioned, and he thought it should have the st-ricus attention of the committee and justices generally. Mr Bo;iz Jones commented on the unwilling- 7 ness of civilians to 1).8"1; the police by giving evidence. "I think," added Mr Jones, "t.ha.t ministers and doOcoIW. of the various denomina- tion; should assist in this direction as well as find'inor fauit" (hoar, hear, and laughter). Tho Chief said that it was evident to him. that a great number of the gentlemen who sent the ro.-oSHition (I;xl not know rnuoh about what he called "the philosophy of drujii-k- ennass" (daughter). He nuuntaiiied that there were a great many di-u'iken men in the stroets who did "net obtain their drink in publ.io-houeos. Moreover, a man ww not served in public-houses when actually drunk. Men. p>t a g-la&s here and a gla-s there, and did not find themsclvos drunk until they tried to walk home. It was then a diffiout matter to find out where tlioy had had the drwrk. It was evcutuftHy ik^cidtxl to LON.Y to the AfwemV.y's -n by merely enrnha-ising the two raies-d .in the discussion, viz., need of g.ing the police greater control over ciubi, the difficulty of ^etring evidence against pub- licans.
