q THE 5, I CONTESTS. i- I ELECTION «■ I CONTESTS. PAGES 2 & 3.
TO THE ELECTORS ,. OF WEST…
TO THE ELECTORS OF WEST DEBIGHSHIRE. Q.ENTLEMEN,—Two years ago I accepted t-hc unanimous invitation of a thorough- ly representative meeting of the Unionists of West Denbighshire to contest the scat at the I Present election. In accordance with my Promise I now come forward. During the past two years I have addressed Public meetings in every polling district throughout the Division. I have l-ved among you, and m going about day by day, have had the pleasure of making the personal Bcquaintanco of very many of you, a.nd of getting to know your needs. I therei xre than I can conlidontly appeal for your i.xc sympathy and support in tilde contest. THE Nà. VY. I believe that the ueoed of a powerful Navy never greater than it is now. Other Nations are straining every nerve to supersede in the command of the sea—a matter in ""hich we cannot afford to run any risks. The Security of our homes, our commerce, and our Enipue depends upon our Navy. An all- jxnverful British Navy is the best guarantee tor the peace of Europe a-nd the World. OLD AGE PENSIONS. The "Old Age Tensions Scheme" has my heartiest. approval, and I regard it as a per- manent part of our Social Legislation, which might wc-ll be improved so as to secure the greater comfort and happiness of our aged Poor. THE CHURCH. I have always felt that one of the greatest Heeds of Wales, and the country generally, is a better understanding between ail Re- ligious Bodies. It is lull time that all Christian people should unite to face the enemies of the Christian faith. I am firmly convinecd that this laudable object cannot be attained by Disestablishment and Discn- dowment of the old Welsh Church. I regard all the endowments given to the Mother ChuyrcJi and to the many Nonconformist Bodies as being alike consecrated to the ser- vice of God. I therefore feel it is my bounden duty strenuously to oppose any attempt to divert to secular purposes the -■gal endowments of our Religious Bodies. EDUCATION. Having struggled very hard, in common with manv other Welsh boys and girls, to gpin my education, I shall always extend my .whole-hearted ^uppoat to any scheme which *'ill j.fford greater and better facilities for the h of Wales to equip themselves for the of life. I am keenly anxious to p ous difficulty by giving every cli the children the religious parents. -RIFF REFORM. -(ate of such a Reform in our Trade system as will (1) urden on the necessaries of life. greater security in the home Dlarket rr.anui'aetuj ero, farmers, and oth ccrs, and provide fuller and better loyment lor the toiling masses our particularly those who are 1low suf* o severely from the evils of 4zfair a. 0113 foreign competition. (3) Give as more freedom in foreign markets; and (4) bring about closer commercial unity between all parts of the British Empire. I advocate Tariff Reform as the only alterna- tive ti) the present Budget. The present budget imposes burdens on land, income, industry, and the luxuries and savings of the poor. It must increase house rents, diminish ernploymc-nt and wages, and generally add to the hardships and miseries of the poor. THE LAND. I %in a strong advocate of small ownership in land. I desire to increase the number of small farmers, and to enable all of them to become the owners of the land they cultivate, and not tenants of the County Council as is the case under the present "Small Holdings Act." SECOND CHAMBER. While I believe in the necessity for a Second Chamber, I am anxious to see the pre- t House of Lords amended in suoh a. banner as to make it more representative. Finally, I promise, if returned as your member, to do all in my power to advance the best interests of our country and to pre- serve and foster every influence that makes for the well-being of Wales and the Walsh motion Tours faithfully, SAM THOMPSON. Ivy Honee, Ruthin, Januarv, 1910.
