Blaenatt Festiniog. TEMPERANCE CONFERENCE.—A temper- ance conference of delegates from Wesley an circuits of North Wales, including Liver pool and the Lanca- shire Welsh Mission, was held at Biaenau Festmiog Wesleyan Chapel on Friday, the n'ev. Hugh Jones, D.D., chairman of the North Wales district, presid- ing. The. Rev. T Isfryn Hughes read a paper on "How to Produce Deeper Convictions in Favour of Temperance." The Rev. T. O. Jones (Trytan) followed with a paper on "The Legitimate Means that can be used m the Adminstratson of the Licensing Laws in Favour of Temperance." It was decided to hoid a public meeting in each circuit during the next month to explain the new licensing law.

RESULT OF DRAW.—We are requested to state that the result of the draw to be he'd cn the 22nd inst. for the'benefit of William Hugihes, Upper Gate-street, will be announced in the "Pioneer" of the 24th inst. INTERCESSION SUNDAY.—In accordance, with the suggestion of the Archbishops, last Sunday was observed at the Parish Church and St. Agnes' Church as the Day of Intercession for Foreign Missions. BENEFIT CONCERT.—A miscellaneous en- tertainment was held at the Boys' School on Thursday evening on behalf of a young fisher- man who has recently been afflicted with blind- ness. The Vicar (the Rev J. P. Lewis) was the promoter. ST. AGNES' ORGAN FUND.—The com- mittee have decided to hold (D.V.) a Christmas Tree entertainment on Thursday, December 30th, in the Town Hall, in aid of this fund. Interesting particulars, will be, published shortly. OBITUARY.—Mr Hugh Hu'ghes, a faithful employee of Mr Morris Roberts, corn mercnant, Castle-street, died very suddenly at his house in Plas Issa-place on Saturday. The interment took place at the cemetery on Wednesday, the Rev Wm. Edwards, pastor of the Baptist Chapel, performing the last rites. "THE HUMAN BODY."—A lantern lecture on the above was given by Dr Pierce Foulkes z, at the weekly meeting of the C. M. Literary Society on, Monday evening. Dr W. Morgan presided over a good attendance. Mr W. E. Jones, the popular baritone, rendered several songs and pennillion. OLD AGE PENSIONS.—There was a crow- ded attendance at the Liberal Club on Wednes- day evening, under the presidency of Alderman Hugh Hu'ghes, when Messrs John Jones and Evan Evans1 began their argument in favour of the adôption of an old age pension scheme by the Government. Dr W. Morgan and Mr J. P. Griffiths were naturally not equally popular in their contentions against the scheme. GYFiFIN BAND OF HOPE.—The weekly meetin;21 of this institution was held on Tues- day evening. There was a fair attendance. Amongst those who sang were Miss L. J. Thoma,s, Miss Jones, (liryntirion), Miss Mabel Williams, and Mr Robert Evans. Recitations were given by Mr William Foulkes and Miss Mary Roux. Miss Mabel Lee won the prize for reciting the 23rd Psalm. THE LIMELIGHT LECTURE ON MILLAIS.—Many are looking forward to this great treat on Friday, next week. Mr Whit- worth Wallis, in addition to giving an account of the pre-Raphaelite art of Sir John Millais1, will show through the limelight his world-re- nowned pictures. Trains are convenient for the neighbourhood. DANGERS OF THE QUAY WALL. Mr Thomas Jones, an elderly quarryman from 'Llanfairfechan, accidentally slipped over the quay on Saturday night, and the tide being out, he had an ugly drop of about 15 feet into the mud. Jones was rescued by a couple of fisher- men, and conveyed to Dr Prichard's surgerv. This makes the third case of the kind during the year. Would it not be wise for the Cor- poration to line the wall with chains or some other detachable means of protection before any lives are lost? TEMPERANCE —Arranged by the Temperance Committee of the Convvav Free Church Council, a very successful temperance meeting was held in i't-e ^ovvn on S;,nf'y afternoon. The Rev. Menai Francis presided over an excellent attend- ance reprcsenf.it! ve-ot all the Free churches of the town. The chapman delivered a short introductory speech, and Alderman Hu'h Hughes followed with t >e reading of 3 portion of Holy Writ, and a prayer. Addresses were delivered bv the Rev William Edw irds (Baptist), the Revs. John Evans and David Jone; (L'andudno), and the Rev J. T. Marquand. On the motion of Mr C Jones (hon secretary of the Temperance Association), a vote of condol- ence was passed with the families of the late Revs. Hu h Price Hughes and Dr Parker Special tem- perance hymns were used during the afternoon while the Misses Sallie Foulkes and Jones Humphreys rendered a couple of solos at intervals. SUDDEN DEATH.—The death occurred, on Thursday, at Hadley Holiday Home, Conway, under painfully sudden circumstances, of Quartermaster-Sergeant-Major Samuel Pritch- I ard, late of the Royal Garrison Artillery. Pritchard, who was in Charge of the institution, I awoke about 'six o'clock, and got out of bed I for the purpose fo getting a drink. Remark- ing to his wife that it was a very dark moraine, v ',1/ he went back to', bed, and was found a few minutes later to be quite dead. The deceased had been attended medically for heart com- plaint, and it is believed death was due to that cause. The deceased, who was 58 years of age, had had a most interesting military career, and his knowledge of South Africa made his views on the conduct of the late war greatly respected locally. He was a native of Eastnor, Hereford- shire. The funeral took place at the Cemetery on Monday, the Rev R. Roberts officiating. The chief mourners were the bereaved widow and deceased's only son and daughter-in-law. Three beautiful wreaths were sent by the Hadley family. The funeral arrangements were carried out by Messrs Williams Brothers, nigh-street, Conway.

Pcnniaenmawr Urban District [T Council. Welcome to the New Surveyor. I THE monthly meeting of this Council was held on Tuesday. There were present Mr -ian son Picton, J.P. (chairman), Capt. Darbishire, J.P., Dr Williams, Dr Jenkins, 'Messrs J. S. Coverley, Richard Williams, John Bowen, R. I D. Jones, David Jones, with the clerk (Mr T. E. Parry), the deputy clerk (Mr Post), the sur- veyor (Mr R. John Hughes), and -Nlr R. W. Hughes (collector). Collected. I •Mr R. W. Hughes reported collecting Z218 19S id during the month. THE Nnxv surveyor's Welcome. The Chairman offered a formal welcome to Mr R. John Hughes, the new surveyor, and hoped he would enjoy a very happy career with them. (Hear, hear.) Mr R. John 'Hughes formally acknowledged the chairman's remarks. Infectious Diseases Hospital. A letter was read from, the Local Government Board inquiring what steps were being taken by the Council in reference to the infectious diseases hospital. On the motion of the Chairman, it was deci- ded that a reply be sent, stating the matter was under the consideration of the Council. under the consideration of the Council. Mr Post's Compensation. On the recommendation of the Finance Com- mittee, the sum, of 613 13s was voted to Mr J. W. Post in return for his services during the six weeks he served as temporary surveyor and sanitary inspector. The Chairman observed that Mr Post had well earned.the compensation. c8; Maw-r Refuse Tip. The Estate Committee recommended that a sub-committee, comprising the chairman, vice- chairman, Messrs J. S. Coverley, C. H. Darbi- shire, and P. H. McClement, be deputed to meet Mr Smith on Tuesday, the 2nd inst., and that the surveyor ascertain cubic: capacity, etc. Replying to the Chairman, Dr Williams repeated his statement to the effect that he was in hopes legislation would compel authorities to do away with the present mode of dealing with refuse. The Chairman: When the Liberal Govern- ment comes in? (Laughter.) Dr Jenkins said the present tip was a nui- sance. The roadway was in a disgusting con- dition in consequence of the rubbish which was blown from it. It was eventually decided that a subcommit- I tee meetinlg1 be held on Friday to consider the matter on the spot. Vruil Statistics. The Medical Officer of Health reported seven births with three deaths, making a death-rate of 9.9 per 1,000 during the month. Protm.;s(,uie Loan. On the recommendation of the Finance Com- mittee, application was made for the loan of £ 2,100 as an additional instalment of the Pro- menade Works loan.

Bettws=y=coed Urban District Council. A MEETING of this authority was held on Friday evening, Mr Robert Parry, J.P., in the chair. Question. A letter was read from the clerk to the County Council, stating that the Council re- fused to take over the Gruglan Road; and, further, that the County Council had also re- fused to give consent to the division of the dis- trict into wards as requested. An Offending Verandah. The clerk was instructed to write Miss Penny, of Bettwsycoed, calling upon her to remove a canvas verandah in front of her residence, and to point out that no objection would be made to the erection of the same at the pine-end of the house. A Governor. The Vicar (Rev R. Jones) was unanimously re-elected to represent the Council on the North Wales University Colle'ge Board of Governors. Oas Supply for Pentredu. After some consideration, it was decided to offer payment at the rate of £8 per annum to the North Wales Gas Supply Company for lay- ing down pipes for the supplying of Pentredu with gas. +

Stopping the Rhyl Express. Extraordinary Case. AT the Holywell monthly sessions, on Tues- day, Thomas Harris, residing at Claremont, Dee Banks, Chester, was summoned by Detective Mason, of the London and North- western Railway Company, for making use of the communication cord on a train without rea- sonable and sufficient cause. 1 foci tne evidence given it appeared that on October 7th the defendant was a passen'ger by the 12.30 p.m. train from Chester to Holyhead. The train did riot stop between Chester and Rhyl, but while it was passing Bagillt station the defendant pulled the communication cord. The train was' pulled up, and the defendant alighted, explaining to a railway inspector who was in the train that he had an important ap- pointment at Bagillt. The Defendant stated that he had made an ,a important engagement with a gentleman at Bagillt, and when the train reached there he pulled the cord to stop it, as he considered he had reasonable cause to do so. The Bench considered that the defendant was not justified in stopping the train, and fined him 61 and costs*.
