Choral Festival at St. Asaph. Vale of Clwyd Church Choral Union at the Cathedral. WHEN speaking of Cathedrals one is accustomed to think at the same time of the religious air which always pervades those cities of which they are the centre. In St. Asaph, thanks to the beautiful, almost summer-like weather which prevailed, this characteristic was never more intensely felt than was the case on Thursday, the hilly and somewhat irregular streets being thronged with gentlemen in clerical attire, men and women, youths and maidens, all in their Sunday best. Most of them were flocking, as though on a pilgrimage, to the ancient Cathedral, which overlooks the Vale of Clwyd like a sentinel, its massive tower, always silhouetted against the skyline, being an impressive- ly silent witness of days long gone by. St. Asaph was, without doubt, intensely alive, and the prime reason for so much vitality was the annual festival being held at the Cathedral in connection with the Vale of Clwyd Church Choral Union, an institution which well deserves the support of Churchpeople. Naturally so important an event as this demands a great deal of preparation, and judging by the result of the day's proceedings the only conclusion that can be drawn is that no effort was spared in any of the deaneries represented to make the festival com- pare favourably with previous records. Though the full strength of the choirs was not so great as has assembled on some previous occasions, they were successful in maintaining the high standard they have occupied for some time past. The choirs were drawn from the various churches in the deaneries of St. Asaph, Denbigh, Dyffryn Clwyd, Rhos, and Llanrwst, and their full strength was between 800 and 1,000. The Bishop of St. Asaph (Dr Edwards) is president of the Union, and the Revs. J Silas Evans, of Gyffylliog, and J Fisher, of Cefn, respectively hon. secretary and hon. treasurer, are two excellent officers, the exacting duties of the former being admirably carried out. The committee consisted of the Dean (the Very Rev. S. Pryce), the Revs D. Williams (Llanynys) T. Williams (Trefnant), E. J. Evans (Llandrillo-yn- Rhos), Lodwick Ellis (Bettws), Trefor Hughes (Llanrhaiaar), W. C. Williams (St. Asaph), Hum- phrey LJayd (Boddelwyddan), and J. H. Hope (Col- wyn Bay), together with Messrs W. A. Lloyd (Llan- bedr, Ruthin), Bedford (Abergele Schools), Alfred W. Hughes (Rhyl), Rees (Trefnant Schools), Pierce (Denbigh Schools), Edward Evans (Rhuddlan), Roberts (Llanddoget, representing Llanrwst deanery), and Gwilym Morris (Holywell, represent- ing Holywell deanery). The organist of the Cathedral, Mr W. E. Belcher, M.A., F.R.C.O., was conductor, and his accustomed place in the organ loft was on this occasion occupied by Mr F.Walton- Evans, organist of Ellesmere College, and a son of Archdeacon Evans. The service, which throughout was of a thorough- ly festal character, the hymns being heartily joined in by all, was intoned by the Revs W. T. Williams and W. D. Williams (vicars choral), and the Scrip- tures were read by the Revs Canon Basil Jones (Llanfair, D.C.) and Canon Roberts (CoUvyn Bay), respectively. Prior to the sermon the massed choirs gave a splendid rendering of the anthem, In Humble Faith and Holy Love" (words by the Very Rev. Dr Rennell and music by Dr G. M. Garrett). The hymn before the afternoon sermon was Come, Holy Ghost, our souls inspire," following which a practical discourse, setting forth the important sphere it was the choristers' duty to fill in the work of the church, was delivered by the Rev. G-. H. Hylton Stewart, Vicar of New Brighton, whose text was from Rev. i., 5 and 6, Kings and priests unto God were the words on which the reverend gentleman dwelt chiefly. The hymn, For all the saints who from their labours rest," followed by the sermon, and the Dean having pronounced the blessing, At the name of Jesus," was sung as a recessional. While the con- gregation dispersed the organist played Gounod's March Romaine. In the interval tea was provided for the choirs at the Drill Hall and National Schools. The service in the evening 'was in Welsh, and was conducted by the Rev. W. D. Powell, vicar choral, the Rev. D. Williams, vicar of Llandyrnog, reading the first lesson, and the Rev. M. Williams, Prion, the second lesson. The anthem was" Cyd- genweh i'r Arghvydd (Owain Alaw), the bass solo being taken by Mr Slater, and the duet by members of the Cathedral Choir. The Ven. Archdeacon Morgan, Bangor, delivered the sermon, based on the words in Psalm xcv. 6-7. Mr Belcher again conducted the singing, which, taken as a whole was most hearty, and executed with much good taste, although the conductor and choristers were not of the same mind with regard to the anthem, thus em phasing the fact that in Welsh services, a conductor is necessary who understands the Welsh style of singing. The closing item was the organist's rendering of the War March of the Priests." The offertories were in aid of the funds of the Union.

-0- CONGREGATIONAL SUNDAY SCHOOL UNION FESTIVAL. Thursday was also a red-letter day with the Welsh Congregationalists of. the Vale of Clwyd, the Sunday School Union Festival taking place at the Wesleyan Chapel, St. Asaph. It is iiiapy years ago since the festival was held here, but it proved no less a success than on former occasions. The arrangements were well superintended by the Rev T. Jones, of Denbigh, with the aid of an effi- cient committee. There were large congregations both afternoon and evening, and the chairman was Mr Richard Jones, Stanley Park, Rhyl. Mr H. E. Pritchard, of Abergele, acted as conductor, and the organist was Mr T. W. Salisbury, of Denbigh. The chorus, numbering upwards of 600 voices, was supplemented by an orchestra arranged by Mr James, Denbigh. The Chairman, who was supported in the afternoon by the Rev David Jones, of Ruthin, addressed both gatherings, and on the former occasion the prizes gained by the scholars in the recent Scripture examination were distributed. Mr Bellis, of Denbigh, also catechised the children. Tea was provided in the Methodist School. The eveni g programme included many pleasing musical items, and the usual votes of thanks to helpers terminated the festival. Mr R. Oldfield, of Rhyl, is treasurer of the Union. |
