The likelihood of an election contest in Mid-Glamorgan is gradually growing less. The Executive Council of the South Wales Miners' Federation, which met on Friday last. refused to sanction the running of a candidate from the Parliamentary fund. This refusal was made after a prolonged and animated discussion, but it was very definite nevertheless, for, out of a large attendance, only four members voted against it. Exactly what arguments influenced the voting it is im- possible to conclude. Probably different rea- sons affected different members. There can be no doubt thrt the stentiment attaching to the honour paid Mr. S. T. Evans in his ap- pointment as Recorder of Swansea had con- siderable sway. As we remarked but a fort- night ago. it is only a graceful act on the occasion of a vacancy through such a techni- cal cause to allow the retiring member to be returned unopposed. At the same time. it is easy to recognise the attitude of the Labour party in seizing upon any opportunity after the way in which they were jockeyed out of a candidate at the last election. But this was not the only reason which affected the Executive Council in coming to their de- cision. There was the fear of defeat, which would have meant the spending of a large sum of money to receive but a crushing blow. And. again, there was the popularity of Mr. S. T. Evans with many members of the Exe- cutive Council. However, whatever the cause the Executive practically have the veto, from which so far as the miners are con- cerned, there is no appeal. The delegates who met at the Bridgend conference were, not unnaturally, dissatisfied with the decision of the Executive, and appealed for a re-con- sideration. This re-consideration has been given, with the same result. « « • With the miners out of the field, it is not likely that any other party will contest the election. So far as the Conservatives are concerned they had been merely waiting to see whether a Labour candidate would be brought into the field, in which case no doubt they would have made a three-cornered con- test of it. The women suffragists, who so readily threatened to bring out a candidate of their own in the absence of a Labour can- didate, are now singing much smaller. The I.L.P. do not relish the fight so soon after their defeat at Cockermouth, and the only party which is now undecided is the Labour Rrepresentation Committee. An appeal to this committee for a candidate has been made t by the Mid-Glamorgan Labour organisation. and the decision of that body is at present being awaited. An unexpected situation was created by the Amalgamated Society of Railway Servants at their meeting at Car- diff this week. This society has suggested the name of Mr. James Holmes. their organ- ising secretary, to the L.R.C. in the event of ] the society deciding to contest the seat, j How the L.R.C. would have taken the sug- gestion under other circumstances we do not know, but as the date for polling, should there be a contest, has been fixed at such an early date—next Friday—it is hardly likely they will consider it politic to attempt to wrest the seat from Mr. S. T. Evans. v All things considered, it is very improbable that Mr. S. T. Evans will be opposed. We merely note the situation, and make no comment. • • w The Glamorgan Education Committee have decided to proceed at once with a new build- ing at Tondu for the Pupil Teachers' Centre. The higher grant cannot be earned in the present building owing to its confined space and the impossibility of undertaking practi- cal work in science, and the Centre has therefore been considerably handicapped in the past. The decision of the committee has removed the uncertainty about the future of the Centre, which has caused so much anxiety to its friends since it was taken over by the County Council. The proposal to erect a new building was the result of the unanimous recommendation of a sub-committee com- posed of Alderman T. J. Hughes. Alderman W. Llewellyn, and Coumy Councillor W. Saunders, all of whom have been staunch sup- porters of the Centre. Alderman Hughes is, of course, the local representative of the Education Committee for the Centre, and Alderman Llewellyn is a member of the Secondary Committee which deals in the first instance with matters relating to Centres.

The singing was of a high order. Mr. King Davies con- ducting. while Miss Lewis (Newcastle Stores) presided at the organ. The morning meet- ing on Monday was of spontaneous character, and a leading part was taken by an Aber- avon man. who told a thrilling story of his life. Others who took part in the service were Revs. David Evans (pastor of the church), and T. R. Williams (Pyle). TREAT AT THE WORKHOUSE.—The inmates of the Bridgend Union Workhouse and Infirm- ary spent a very pleasant afternoon on Fri- day. when they were entertained by Mrs. Turbervill. of Ewenny Priory, on the occasion of her departure with Colonel Turbervill for a twelve months' tour abroad. A capital ten was provided, among the ladies who assisted at the tables being Sirs. Turbervill. Mrs. W. R. Randall, Mrs. D. Phillips and Miss George (Newcastle lïcarage). Mrs. DoJd. Mrs. R. On the following day these were distributed between the poor of the town, the Bridgend Cottage Hospital, and Union Workhouse and the Cardiff Infirm- ary. Debtor attributed his failure to taking over too many book debts with the business and falling off of trade through competition. He commenced business in April. 1902. without any capital, agreeing with his former em- ployer to take over the bakery business, with a considerable number of book debts, at an agreed price of £143. To enable him to pay his employer before entering on the business, debtor obtained two loans from his uncle of jE71 10s. each. neither of which had been re- paid. Debtor was unable to collect the debts which he took over. and ninny of them were still unpaid. When he took over the busi- ness he was working at the rate of eleven or twelve sacks a week. but in consequence of competition his trade had dropped to four I sacks a week. The examination was closed provisionally. NEW BRIDGEND J.P. On Saturday notification was received of the appointment of Mr. W. J. Lewis. Cae- Derwyn. Bridgend, as Justice of the Peace. Mr. Lewis, who is at present in i^landrin- dod Wells for the benefit of his health, is a highly respected resident of the town, and the appointment is naturally a popular one. Born in Clynderwen (Pembrokeshire) 73 years ago, he comes of the well known Henllan family, with which the late Bishop of Llan- daff was closely connected. In 1866 Mr. Lewis came to reside in Bridgend. and from that time carried on the business of a draper at London House until his retirement about six years ago. He has been connected with the Gas and Water Co. for many years. toeing one of the directors. He was a Member of the Bridgend School Board until it ceased to exist under the Education Act of 1902, and was elected chairman of that authority. He was the nominee of the Bridgend District. Council on the managers of the local group of Council Schools, and was first chairman of that body, but he had to give up the duties of the managership owing to ill-health. Mr. Lewis has been for a Quarter of a century superintendent of Hope English Baptist Sunday School, and on his retirement through advancing years he was elected pre- sident and an illuminated address was pre- sented him. For nearly 30 years he has been treasurer of Hope Church. It is interesting to note that Mr. Lewis is the first Noncon- formist in Bridgend to be placed on the Commission of the Peace. Mr. T. W. David, of Pendoylan House. Pendoylan. has also been made a magistrate.
Penmark Farmer Sued.
Penmark Farmer Sued. "~Evan Williams. Penmark Farm. was sued for £ 10 10s. by Messrs. D. Evans and Sons, owners of an entire horse, at Barry County Court, the defendant counter-claiming for R6 for the keep of the groom and the borse. Defendant admitted the claim, and Mr. W. L. Yorath. solicitor, resisted the counter-claim. His Honour gave judgment for the £10 10s. admitted to be due, and gave defendant permission to bring an action on the counter-claim when he had obtained fur- ther evidence.
