LOCAL NOTES.
LOCAL NOTES. (BY GWYNOR.") A oes heddweh ? Oes!" These are mighty words, fraught with a mighty significance. Those of us who are versed in Roman history will recollect that exciting incident wherein an envoy brought back to a town glad tidings of peace, and caused the said town to go beside itself with enthusiasm. That was in the olden' times when romance was the order of the day and human nature had not clad itself in the sober and conventional garb in which it appears nowadays. Those days are gone for ever. They may loom large in our imaginations, when we think of them, but they are not present day realities. If they were the declaration of peace that has been made during the week by the Bridgend Urban District Council, they would not have been suffered to go by without a popular demonstration. For we were threatened with the horrors of war, and behold! the blessings of peace have come in their stead. Only last week the Council Chamber vibrated with the McGaulian lava-flow of indignation, and Bevanian wrath rolled out in copious volumes till "Nor war and nor battle cry was heard the room around (Milton modernised and adapted). These sounds of revelry by night presaged—so people thought-a coming storm of unmentionable magnitude. The great big public, in their wisdom, were of opinion that that was but the preliminary skirmish in a series of hotly- contested battles. But alas it's not to be. The mighty sword hath been sheathed; glittering arms have been laid down; passions have assuaged; hands have been shaken, and—our councillors have had their reasons restored to them. « Talking about battles reminds me of the talk about the great fight at Swansea between the representatives of the rose and the leek. I was not there. I wish I was though, for, it seems, from all accounts, to have been the most consummate exposition of the Rugby game ever witnessed. At least so they say. But I don't take everything the modern footballer says as infallible gospel. To judge from the animated arguments carried on on Sunday mornings in Bridgend street corners between the more loyal followers of the game it would seem that it is a case of everybody differing from everybody else when the merits of a match are dealt with.

It proved a splendid per. formance, the actors who filled the most important roles being really excellent. Altogether the piece proved about the best that a Bridgend audience has been treated to for some time. Mr W. Evans was the local manager. A PIGEON SHOOTING Sweepstakes was held at the Star Inn, Treoes, on Mabon's Day. The con- ditions were three birds each, 24 yards rise. There were eight competitors, and the first prize was won by Mr Richard Lewis, Royal Oak, Bryn- cethin, who grassed his three birds; the second and third prizes were divided between Mr W. Thomas, Queen's Head, Bridgend, and Mr Wm Howells, Star Inn, Treoes, who each grassed two out of three birds. Target shooting followed, the prize being a pig. The target was 3 inches in diameter, and the distance 40 yards. Mr Wm Howells was the successful shot. Some amuse- ment was caused by the advent of an Excise officer from Cowbridge, who took the names of all the shooters. Their licenses were, however, all right at home.
KODAKETTES.
KODAKETTES. [BY SNAPSHOT-] After the expenditure of a certain amount of moral suasion, a great amount of forcible ejaculation, and a little coin of the realm, I managed to get my camera into working order in time to take it to the police-court on Saturday. My intention was to have snapped" the new beaks," and I was not without the hopee that I should have obtained some highly interesting pictures of the expression on the faces of some of the "Great unpaid" when asked for their decision with reference to their first" d and d." But it was nob to be. I and my camera were bitterly disappointed. I actually gave up the idea of going to see the great International at Swansea in order that I might be able to obtain these much sought after pictures, but my self sacrifice did not get its reward. The new J.P.'s were conspicuous by their absence, and there was nothing but a beggarly array of empty benches, as only three of the old hands turned up. I caught myself thinking when I saw the dearth of old stagers whether the cause of their absence was that there was a possibility of meeting some of the new men, had they been present* However, the new men were absent, and so were all the old ones, with the exception of three. A newly-made J.P. took his seat on the Bench the other day. He was one who did so by virtue of his chairmanship of a District Council. A poor, miserable drunkard came np before him. Police- constable Al proved the case, and addressing the delinquent, the newly-fledged one, with blissful ignorance of the respect due to the Chairman, said, "Prisoner at the bar, it has been proved that you are guilty of the awful crime of drunkenness. It is not for me, by any words of mine, to add to the solemnity and seriousness of your position, or to harrow your feelings by recapitulating the disas- trous details which have led to your appearance before me. Suffice it to say that you are found guilty, and I fine you 2s 6d and costs, and may the Lord have mercy on your soul!" It was in the hope of hearing something like this, aad of snap- ping the solemn look of the beak when pronouncing similar words, that I went to the Court on Satur- day. I went in expectant. I came out disgusted, and offered up a prayer that Judge Gwilym Wil- liams' recent remarks as to the non-attendance of J.P.'s would be taken to heart by the Rev F. W, Edmondes, Messrs J. Barrow, W. Buckley, J. Grace, and Blandy Jenkins. I managed to snap something. It was a police- man. He was all very fine and large, especially in his great coat. He said he came from Kenfig. Good old Kenfig. He said his usual walking pace was a mile in 12 minutes. Good old bobby. Good old li-on. Never saw such a phenomenon yet. Usual police pace one mile in 30 minutes. This bobby holds the record for police walking. Also for something else. Took my camera out on Sunday. Very wicked of me. Snapped a Nonconformist person busy taking names of young men going into Conservative Club. Mistaken zeal on his part. Ought to have been at home. He is a "Timothy" himself. Take's some- thing "for his stomach's sake." Plenty of Timo- thies about Bridgend Went to Bridgend Urban District Council on Tuesday. Buckley smiled at me. Mac winked. Bevan frowned. Lloyd beamed. Phil grinned. Others looked serious. There was a great calm. Something going to happen. Mac supported the chair. Chair supported Mac. Jolly good friends all round. Probable effect of Sunday night. Probable cause, Sunday night's sermon. First Sunday in New Year. Turn over new leaf. Let bygones be bygones. Bury the hatchet. Till April. Then it will be "Hatchet redivius." Councillors would not sit on one anobher. So sat on Criswick. Man with a. grievance. Bro verbial as the Derby dog. Criswick threatened law. Councillors laughed. Letter laid on table. Pity someone else could not be there too. Ructions in store. Kodak and I went to Volunteer ball. Splendid spectacle. Splendid decoration. Splendid dresses. Splendid girls. Splendid Staff-Sergean Lane. Splendid oysters. Splendid stout. After that, oblivion. Am going to Tonduuext week. Plenty of men and things to be snapped there. Should like to snap the secretary of the rail way men'a sapper. Did me out of an enjoyable evening. Won't do it again. Also want to snap new Conservative agent there. Want to knotf how he likes his quarters. Toleiably warm, I should think. Am also going to snap the new police-station. And the new hospital. When they come. Till next week, Adieu
