WEDNESDAY both Houses of Parliament wers ptorogued by Commission; The Commissioner) having taken their seats, a inessftgfc was sebt to require the presence of the Commons and the Speaker shortly after appearing", attended by a considerable number f members, tne Liovii Chan- cellor read the following I)eecli My Lot-ds and Gentlemen; The business of the Session being brought to a conclusion, we are commanded by h!s Majesty to express the great satisfaction which he feels in releasing you from your laborious attendance in Parliament. His Majesty returns you his wannest acknow- ledgements for the £ eal and assiduity with which you have prosecuted the inquiries into the state of Ireland, which he recommended to you at the opening of the Session. It is a particular gratification to his Majesty, that the tranquillity and improved condition of that part of the United Kingdom, have rendered the extraordinary powers with which you had invest- ed his Majesty; no longer necessary for the pub- lie safety. u His Majesty is happy to be able to announce to you, that he receives from all Foreign Powers the strongest assurances of their friendly disposi- tion towards this country and of their desire to maintain -,etierai peace; il While his Majesty regrets the continuance of the War in the Bast Indies with the Burmese Government, he trusts that the gallant exertions of the British and Native Forces employed in operations in thfe Enemy's territory, may lead to a Speedy and satisfactory termination of the contest. Geiltlcmen yf the House of Commons, \0 have it in common from his Majesty id thank you for the stipplies which you have gr2rtted to him for the service of the present year; iind fit the same time to express the satisfaction which he derives from the reduction you have found it rae-z ticable to make in the burdens of the people. My Lords and Gtntltmth, His Majesty has commanded tts to assure yott that he is highly sensible of the advantages which must rfcsult from the measured ybu have adoltedl- in the course of this Session, for extending the commerce of his subjects, by the removal of un- necessary and inconvenient restrictions and from the beneficial relaxations which you havedeMned it expedient to introduce into the Colonial system of this country. "These measures his Majesty is persuaded1 willeviffee to his subjects in those distant posses- sions the solifcitudetfith which Parliament watches over their welfare. They tend to cement and consolidate the interests of the Colonies with those of the Mother Country; and his Majesty confidently trusts,that they will contribute to promote that genera? and increasing prosperity, oti wMch his Majesty had the happiness, of congra- tulating you on the opening of this Session, and by the Messing of Providence, continues to p'et-^ „ 1 vadc every part 0, this iwWuru'D.n;

-Oi fLturiteiu SATL-ADAY JULY 9. IT has been remarked as e>itraordius~ y that the progress of knowledge among the working classes sh6uld notba eceomn^d by a corresponding increase o. moral fee- ing and conduct—in other words, that to become wiser and better, are not, as they chould be, synonymous terms. But those who reproach the lower with this degeneracy ¡ would do well to consider h ow far they may be themselves the cause of the defect which s they complain of. Good seed is of little value in the vegetable world unless pteced- ed and followed up by wise and wholesome j cultivation. And we s £ e little go«d likely to result from makingrtien scholars, it religion be withheld from the possessors of other f knowledge; if the Press administers to the worst passions of the multitude; and it fi- nancial regulations drive a man to spond ¡ those hours in the ale-house and the gin- ¡ shoo which ought to be devoted to domes- tic comfort. There are those, we have no doubt, who will startle at the first or these assertions, and will be ready to exclaim with astonishment, "Religion with-held from the people! Is there not a spiritual ¡ guide in every parish andme not build- ing churches all over the kingdom It is very true that we are building churches and if the piety of the age were to rest it- self on that particular alone, those who complain of the want of religious instruc- tion Would be driven out of the field.— But though these churches have been built for the most part out of the public taxes, is thefts in the majority tit them any accom- modation for the gejiorality of people; or rnther, do W'ê not, with an ecclesiastical establishment endowed beyond any in the World) shut the doors of the House of iJou against all who cannot pay for admission! We Shall perhaps be told of the free sittiugs that are to be found in some of these churches of the holes and corners, and one-shilling galleries, in which a work man and his family may by accident gain accom- modation; but these, bad as they arc form I but Sorry exceptions to the riue ana, ge^ iierally speaking, we assert without tear o, contradiction, that in the metropolis and f and other large places, the doors of our churches are hermetically closed against the middle and lower orders of society.— The Dissenters of all denominations, feel the force of this and do not fail to avail themselves of the opportunity which the lukfewarmness of the Goyernment upon this oubieet affords them. When the supposed rights or emoluments of the Church are in danger, a thousand tongues arc raised in its' defence; but if the principal end for which the Establishment is maintained, becomes the question, nothing can rouse its slum- bering guardians from their lethargy. Ot the truth o'lthis we have a striking instance in the project which is now afloat for term- ing wbat, is called a London University. Instead of throwing cold water upon this, and dviving its promoters from their pro- posed Act of Parliament, to the formation of a Trading Company, it was the mani- fest policy, if not the duty of Govennnen as soon as they perceived a probability oi the I thin? taking effect, to have adopted it wem- selv 2S, to have given it every encourage- ment, to have rescued so important a SUM from becoming a school either or infl- dclny or of sectarianism and dissent, both in politics and religion. We have wandered from our original object> which was to show the.tt any knowledge unaccompanied by re- ligious instruction is worse than useless and if it be the object of the promoters d this New University to make the rising generation wiser than the last, without making them letter, such knowledge will in the end be rather a curse than a bles- sing.
