PIR. SIYERrDdX. This gentleman's abilities and patriotism have been equally admired through his literary and political life. His late brilliant defence of the liberty of the press has brought him before the public, notindeed in a new light, but in a most exalted one.—We therefore feel no need of apologisiug for tbe following biographical sketch. WHETHER we view this popular charac- ter as a poet, a statesman, or a wit, he will excite equal admiration; for on each of those ei/vi :d foundations he has built himself a last- ing monument. Richard Brinsley Sheridan is the third son of Thomas and of Frances Sheridan. He was born at Dublin, in the parish of St. Mary, in the latter end of October, 1751. His father was the son of the Rev. Dr. Thomas Sheridan, the friend of Swift, and highly respectable as a schoolmaster and a divine. He was the compiler of the English Dictionary, besides which, he produced seve ral other works. His mother, was known in the field of literature, and was the authoress of several comedies and other works, among el which were the novel of Sidney Biddulph, and Non-Jahud, a moral tale. At the age of seven, Richard Brinsley She- ridan, with his brother Charles Francis, (the eldest having died in infancy,) was placed uuder the care of Mr. While, an eminent schoolmaster in England, and shortly after settled at Windsor.—In the latter end of 1759, the two brothers followed them, aud resumed their education under their pa- rents. Their father had, by this time, attained considerable celebrity as a teacher ofelocu- t o i,and ad embarked in his English Dictio- nary, in aid of the prosecution of which (in 1762) he was voluntarily honoured with a pension. Being thus raised in circumstances it was determined to place the Jouuger son at Harrow school. At this celehrated acadcmv, 1\1r. Sheridan, was rather fortunately placed, for the learned Dr. Summer was then at the head, and Mr. (since Dr.) Parr, whose name it is sufficient to mention, was usher. An insuperable in. dolence had hitherto pervaded the young stu- dent, so as almost to exclude the hopes of his progress. Dr. Pitrr, however, prevailed over this, elicited the latent spark of genius, and sent the elegant sluggard into the world full of promise. In (iie war 1766, he fost his molitor, who had retired for the benefit of her health to the south of France. She died at Blois, on the mh day of September, and her remains re- ceived a compliment hut seldom granted, in being permitted private interment iu the te- inctry of tliit Catliedrii. On leaving Harrow, Mr. Sheridan remov ed, about 1769, to the Middle Temple; of wiiicii he was entered as a student, hot like many bright ornaments of English history, he studied every thiug but the law. His time, however, was not spent in idleness, and his limited allowance proved a spur to his ex ertious. He, as the greatest men had done before him, obtained from assisting occasional publications of the day, an honourable aux iliary to his finances. An answer to the he- roic epistle of Sir Wm. Chambers was also at- tributed to him. From the habits and connections of his pa- rents, he had been naturally led to a theatri- cal acquaintance, and amongst many attrac- tive graces, he soon singled out Miss I.inley as the lady most worthy his attention. It was during the oratorios, that he first, saw and heard this lady, who so enraptured him and all her audience. Miss Linley was the eldest daughter of the respectable composer of that name. The beauty of her person and her faciuating pow- ers, drew around her a host of admirers. Mr. Sheridan saw, and heard, iii(i loved Mr. Linley, however, did not encourage the assiduities of the lover; influenced, perhaps by those prudential reasons so common to pa- rents, he hoped for a more eligibie match. The accomplished suitor, however, succeeded over his numerous rivals.-He wooed her in the harmony of verse, and defended her cha- racter against a rejected admirer. The following exquisite stanzas, will at once evince the delicacy of his passion, and display the richness of his muse. They were left in a grotto near Bath, where Mr. Sheri- dan, meeting Miss Linley, had been more free in his advice than behoved even a philoso- phical lover Uncouth is this moss covered grotto of stone, And damp is the shades of this dew-dropping tree; Yet I this rude grotto with rapture will own, And, willow, thy damps arc refreshing to uie. For this is the grotto where Delia reclin'd, As late I in secret her confidence sought; And this is the tree kept her safe from the wind, As blushing she heard the grave lesson I taught. Then tc II me thou grotto of moss-covered stone, And tell me, thou willow with leaves dripping dew Did Delia seem vex'd when Horatio was gOlJc? And did she confess her resentment to you ? And thou, atony grot, in thy arch may'st pre- serve Two ling'ring drops of the night-fallen dew; And just let them fall at her feet, aad they'll serve As tears of my sorrow entrusted to you: Or, lest they unheeded should fall at her feet. Let them fall on her bosom of snow; and I swear The next time 1 visit thy moss cover'd seat, I'll pay thee each drop with a genuine tear. So may'st thou, green willow, for ages thus toss Thy branches so lank o'er the slow winding stream And thou stony grotto,, retain all thy moss, While yet there's a poet to make thee his theme. Nay mere—may my Delia still give JOB her charms Each ev'ning, and sometimes the whole ev'ning long; Then, grotto, be proud to support her white arms, Then, willow, wave all thy green tops to her soug. An incident occurred that no less establish- ed him as a man of spirit, than the above lines did, as one of genius. Mr. Mathews, a man of fashion, had thought proper to asperse the character of Miss Linley, through the medium of a provincial paper. Mr. Sheridan disco- vered the author, who had lied to London.— Thither be pursued him, called him to account at a tavern in Covent-Garden, disarmed him, and insisted on his signing a retraction of the ca lumny. His brother Charles Francis, was his second upon this affair of honour. Notwithstanding that the calumniator had been compelled to submit, his enmity and re- venge revived on fiuding his retraction made as public as his paragraph had been, and in the same journal, he therefore endeavoured to recover his fame, by following, in his turn, his enemy to Bath, and demanding satisfaction. This, although the laws of honour did not de- mand it, was afforded him again they itiettt Kingsdown, with swords aud pistols, and both were wounded the conflict was desperate they fell to the ground together, and contiiui- ed it in that position till the sword of Mr. Ma- thews was broken in some part of Mr. Sheri- dan's body. The apology was renewed; and Mi s Linley pn ven'e its further cause by ac companying the conqueror to ihe continent, where they were married and on their return, I received the sanction of the lady's father. Mrs. Sheridan resigned her professional situation, and Mr. Sheridan took up the pen to secure an emolument lost hy the resigna- tion of his wife. He produced successively The Rivals, St. Patrick's Day, Duenna, Trip to Scarborough, School for Scalldal, Critic, and latterly Pizarro, &c. &c. In the year 1780 he was elected member of parliament for the borough of Stafford, and in his early political connections joined himself with Mr. Fox. III 1782 lie became under Se- cretary of State, winch lie resigned on the Rockingham administration. In all great questions Mr. Sheridan was the undeviating supporter of Mr. Fox; yet upon some occasions he was also to be (bund with- out him. The French Revolution, however, iiie period to which we are now arrived, was not one on which these two great men sepa- rated. Together they painfully resigned the friendship of Edmund Burke, and the reward of many whose friendship they both highly valued. In conjunction, they maintained those principles (bunded upon truth, aud in which they remained unshaken amidst the mass of error that surrounded them. On the lamented death of that great stales- man, Mr. Pill, Mr. Fox, after an absence from power of twenty-three years, was, hy the unanimous voice cf the sovereign and the peo- ple, called into office. This, at. once shewed his virtue and the exalted estimation in which he was held, and it only appeared to realize the axiom of two stars can- not move in one sphere. Mr. Sheridan was called to share the ho- nours of his friend. He became a member of the privy council, and treasurer of the navy. This change produced in the country the most general satisfaction, and Mr. Sheridan's constituents testified their approbation of his appointment to office, by returning him a fifth time as their representative. He applied himself to the important duties of his situation with great diligence. But an event soon took place that checked the serenity of his progress, as well as that of his copartners, and disorgan- ized those plans on which the hopes of the na- tion were built. This was the death of that great and justly venerated man, Mr. Fox. who had so long excited the wonder of Europe, by his political talents. (To be Cantinucd.)

To the Editors of the North IVales Gazette. HISTORY OF THE EGERTONS' OF RIDLEY. ( Continued from this Paper of Dec. 14, 1809,) Sir Ralph Egerton, grandfather to the chan- cellor, died about the 20th of Henry VIII. for in that year, March 26, the probate of his will bears dale, though it was made on Ihe 2d March, 1525, 17th Henry Vill. He thereby orders his body to be buried in the chapel at Bunbury, and that 12 torches be borne by 12 men in black gowns, the day of his burial; and 2-t tapers hurtling about his body the same day and that his executors distribute £ 10. sterling, not only to beggars, but also to such poor men and women, as they shall think con- venient. He likewise orders his executors to furnish at his proper costs and charges, the said chapel covered with lead, and drawn with knots, and the panuels painted, as also ima- ges for either side of the altar within the cha- pel and the chancel. And that his executors provide all manner of ornaments; as one chalice gilt, and another double gilt; three suits of vestments one coarse for workedays, another for Sundays and lowe holydays and the third a good suit for solemn and high fes- tival days; and that his green velvet gown lined with green sarsenet, guarded with cloth of gold, as also his gown of velvet on velvet, lined with black satin, and pearled with gold, be taken for the performance of tilu, same.— As also his jacket of cloth of silver, and of blue and russett velvet, to make crosses and other ornaments to the said chapel, which he orders to have paved with square ashler, or other tile or stone, as his executors think con- venjeut. And that they erect a tomb for him ¡ with a large marble stone, with his name and arms engraven thereon, with this addition, The King's standard Hearer and Treasurer to the Lady Princess. As also a gilt plate fas- tened on the wall, with his name and arms, and addition as aforesaid. And that they cause a house to be built at Bunbury, basted with free stone, and covered with Nileisli slate, on such ground as his brother William shall ap- point, for his chauntry priests to pray for his soul, his father and mother's souls, and all other souls of his kin, and all cliristiaii souls for ever; which priests to attend on holy days, aud perform Divine Service in the Quire. And if they neglect duty in such ar- ticles, as his executors shall appoint, that then they be removed, and that his cousin Philip Egerton,. and the heirs male of his body put in such priest or priests as he shall think vir- tuous and honest, and in default of the said Philip and his heirs, the said priests to be no- minated by Wylbram and the heirs male of his body. Which chauntry house to contain two chambers, one parlour, a buttery and a kitchen, and the said priests to be maintained out of his mill at Nantwich, and Wyche-kotise, and other lauds at the discre- tion of his executors, as also for the mainte- nance of the said chapel at Bunbury, with or- naments and reparations. Which Richard Egerton, his son and heir, was of age the 28d year of Ilenry Vlll. for on the 25th Dec. he had spcciallivcry of his lands by grant from the King. He was knighted, and was father of the Lord Chancellor Egerton. Ridley Hall and I have mentioned before, were given to the Egertons out of the forfeited estates of Sir William Stanley, of Holt Castle, by Ilenry VIII, The ancient Hall was burnt down by the accident of a servant setting fire to a chest of flax. The hall and court had been surrounded by a wide and deep moat. The arched gateway entering the court still remains, it is built of stone, is 9 yards and half in width, and 6 in depth. The arch is about 5 yards in width, and about 5 yards in height. The porters lodge is above Ihe trait*, lo which there is a flight of steps. Over tiie arch of the gate are the arms of the Egertons with many quarterings. The Hall ¡ was besieged in the civil wars by a party of royalists, and two of the Parliamentarians killed through the window of the porters Z, 1. lodge. There is yet remaining within the court an autient timber structure, which is called the Star Chamber, where the courts were formerly held. There is a railing of rude woikmanship, on the inner side next to the yard which was probably the gallery, where the attendants at the courts were placed, and is about 14 yards in length. The jurisdiction of this Court-leet au d Baron still continues, which the steward and 12 jurymen hold year- ly, and take cognizance of all trespasses, -,issvs, "omplaints of insufficient fences, recovery of debts under 40 shillings within the townships of Ridley, Peckforton, BicUerlon, Broxton, and Ilaughton. The famous piece of water called Ridley Pool, which the Cheshire pro- phet Nixon predicted should be plown arid sown, is now a spacious meadow, but which formerly afforded a supply of fish and wild fowl for the table at the JIa II; a necessary appendage to a country mansion. The head of the river Weaver is at a short distance, and passes through these meadows. The arms of the Egertons of Hidlcy were Arg. a Lion ram- pant, between 3 pheon's heads. Ridley Hall and demesnes were purchased temp. Cha. 11. by the Bridsremans, and in the reign of Geo. II. by the Pepys family. Sir W. W. Pepys is now the possessor. 'I he Ridley Chapel in Bunbury Church is kept in good repair it is separated from the chancel by a neat oak open-work skreen, painted with many flowers and arms; on the cornice is cut in black letter capitals, This Chapel wus made at the cost and charge of Sir Rauffe Egerlon, Knight, in the year of our Lord, The hrackclii on lach side the Altar, on which he directed the images to be placed, yet remain; and the impression ofthe gilt pi ale affixed lo the wall; which was pro- bably stolen when the Parliament army took possession of the Church. The communion lable (lag, now serves as a stoiie over the little river Gowy, which runs near the foot of the steps leading to the Church. The chauntry house is now the residence of the head-master of BUllbury school. Cheshire. ANTIQUARIUS.

On sheltering Sheep in frinter, from BAKE- WJELL'S Observations on Irool, BOTti interest and humanity call upon the farmers to provide some hcller for their ilocks during the screrity of the winter. 1 trust that the efforts Lord Somerville has some time made to awaken the northern farmers from their supineiiess, will not be in vain. It is not only in the northern counties, but in every part of our island, that more attention is re- quired to provide occasional shelter against the inclemencies of the climate, both for sheep and all other animals which are exposed in the fields. In proportion as they are made comfortable, will be their tendency to im- prove; and it is not only our interest, but every humane man must feel it his duty, to provide for those animals which are entrusted to his care. In the northern districts such at- tention seems absolutely necessary. The fann- ers in the midland and southern counties can scarcely form an idea of the tremendous wintry storms which sweep over the Cheviot hills, and the wild fells of Cumberland and Westmorland, or the still bleaker mountains of Scotland and Wales. At such times the heavens are darkened with descending- snows, and sleet, driven by furious gusis of wind, which compel the sheep to seek protection in hollows and glens near the bottom of the mountain. Suddenly an impetuous blast uplifts whole fields of snow trom its shelving sides above, and driving aloft, in tumultuous whirl, precipitates the contents on the miserable flock, which are in a moment buried deep under the surface. In vain may the shepherd try to trace them over a driving expanse oi snow were he to attempt it, he might share the fate of his flock. But all effort of this sort is fruitless; for the summits, the sides, and the very base of the mountain, are involved in tempests, and a night of clouds, which bdry every object in impenetrable gloom. The shepherd, mindful of his own safety, re- lurns home, aud day after day, awaits the j hour when he may wander out safely in search of his flock; whilst they in the mean time are j sickening with hunger and perishing with cold, are at last relieved by death from their long protracted misery. Thus have perished during the winter, many thousand sheep in Northumberland, and other northern parts of ui- island. Singular Circii mstatice. -Some time ago V the wife of Mr. Cooper, whose husband live* at a cottage at Itotheram, was taking some hay from a rick for the cow, when a person came from behind one of the stacks and en* treated her protection, as, he said, that he was pursued by some persons who sought his life. After consulting her husband, they agreed to give him shelter, as his clotbeS were wet through and covered with mild# Having been provided with a bed, the woman of the house proceeded to wash his shirt aud clean his clothes, which, she observed to her husband, did not belong to any cnmmoll person--In the morning he thanked then* j for their kindness, and proposed giving thcto a draft for 10001. on his banker, whichj with 1 the advice of their neighbours, they refused* j lest it should lead them into any difficulty of danger. He then took his leave and departed, and the farmer's son put him in the road to- London, having left liini in ctitisequeiice- of 1 quarrel. Here the matter lested for some time, until the farmer employed frlcnd to examine the will of all men of for. tune who died in London about the time, when it was found thatlOOOl. was be<5[uealhc$I by an eccentric Lord, who died immediately alter, to a Mr. Cooper, without mentioning who he was, or the place of his-residence. j Swindling.—Two dashing belles have been figuring on the town for about time or hve days, and have obtained goods of jewellers to a very considerable amount, they have gene- rally gone into a shop immediately after some person ot consequence had I-eft it, for whofrl they made inquiry. They travel in a car- riage, and are attended by a livery servant* well versed in his business. The goods were- generally delivered to the carriage, and cheque given; hut ia other instances they were sent to a given address. The ladies had apartments in Coram-slreet, in Gower-street* and in Queen Aime-slreel. One lradesmal) has been a sufferer to the amount of 5CI()I- and at every lodging they have left their ac- counts unpaid. Information has been givel* to the Police, but the Swindlers have ilot yet been secured, A very singular circumstance occurred lately near Meigle. The overseer of a bleteli-f-,el(t heard, or thought. he heard, one day, a dread- fui shriek at a particular part of a which was then going. He knew the voice to he that of one of the young woiaen who was- employed at the work, and ran-immediately to the spot, apprehending that some accident had befallen her. He was muwsh surprised* however, to find that neither sle4 nor indeed any one else, was within the house. Oil g"- ing out Ire discovered her in, a distant part of the field, occupied along with some other wo- ilicil he went up to her immediately, and questioned her if she had been in at the ma- chinery, and she replied in the negative; be then related the particulars of what had hap- pened. The circumstance, made a deep im- pression on the poor girl's miud, and notwith- standing the ridicule of her companions, she- grew very melancholy from the idea that what the overseer bad heard was a death warning. Two new commercial Decrees have recently been promulgated in France. The one liag for its object to prohibit all ships from leav- ing French ports with corn, unlcss half thei cargoes consist of wine or brandy. That ot the other is to lay a double duty on all mer- cliandise brought by foreign ships iutuFfenchr ports. MEDICAL REPORT.—The last month has been very productive of disease. Without iiiir particular epidemic prevailing; illness has- been generally complained of in most parts. of the town. In some instances, acute rheu- matism has been accompanied with pleurisy* or with pcripneumony. In the commencement of such complaints, blood letting is decidedly beneficial but if too long- deferred, the pa- tient will seldom bear this operation the disease is protracted, and sometimes defeats the utmost efforts of the practitioner. Cough and difficulty of breaihing have attacked peo pie of all ages with alarming severity audi the chronic catarrh, which in this clissiaie ifti very usual in the winter season, and generally: affects persons from forty to sixty, has itfc some instances terminated fatally. This event however, rarely hap peas, unless the patient, has been subject to frequent attacks of the complaint, or has been badly managed in the beginning of it. The receipt of Legacy Duty last year, cx. ceeded that of the preceding one by more than one half. Friday se'nninght the Bidding took place at the Treasury for the ensuing Lottery.
