r DEATH OF MR. ABRAHAM HOWELL. We regret to have to announce the death of Me Abraham Howell, J.P, of Rhiewport, Berriew, which sad event took place early yesterday (Sunday) morning, in the 84th year of his age. He was the sea of Edwd. and Eleanor Howell, of Bont, Llanbrynmair and was born in April, 1810. His mother was sistec to the Rev John Roberts, a venerable and well known Nonconformist divine. Deceased was one of a large family of ten sons and two daughters, and at as early age was placed in the office of Messra Owen & Jones, solicitors, of Machynlleth. Mr Joseph Jones, the junior member of the firm, removed to' Wehh pool a few years afterwards, where he held the office of Clerk of the peace and other public appoint- ments untii his death, which took place in 1843 and where for a great many years he was in partner- ship with Mr Griffiths Parry, the firm being known as Griffiths Parry and Jones, and having an extensive practice in that distriat. On tho death of Mr Griffiths Parry, which occurred suddenly at Wynnstay, the firm was re-constituted by the admission of the late Mr William Yearsley and Mr Abraham Howell, who WitS admitted a solicitor in 1840, uuder the style of Jones, Yearsley aud Howell. Mr Joseph Jones died from the effects of an accident in 1848, and the firm shortly afterwards dissolved, Mr Yearsley and Mr Howell practising separately after. Mr Howell was appointed county treasurer, clerk to the second district of turnpike roads, and to tho justices of Mathrafal Deuthur, and some years after- wards to the justices of the Canrse division. For many years the want of railway communication fix Montgomeryshire had been keenly felt, but that want; was not likely at one time to be soon supplied, owinff to a compact being entered into by the two great; railway companies-tbe London and North Western and Great Western Railways-not to oarry out any farther extensions. In consequence of this, about 1854, Mr Howell took an active part in bringing about the co-operation of somejof the largest landowners and others interested in the welfare of Montgoraeryabires A. committee was formed, the result being the intro- Auction in the following session, 1855, of a Bill for the making of a railway from Oswestry to Newtown, which, after consider- able opposition was passed into an act. The following session an Act was obtained for the makiug of a railway between Shrewsbury and Welshpool, and these were followed later by Act. for cxi nsious from Newtown to Machynlleth, Mach- ynlldh to Aberystwy th and PwLheli. An Act had previously been obtained for the construction of st short line to Newtown aud Llanidloes, and after- wards for extending the railway from that town to Brecon, ujder th,, titte of tho Mid .Wales Railway. The Llanidloes railway was the first to be con- structed and opened for traffic. Mr Howell was the solicitor to most of these) conipauies, and took a most active part in promoting the constiuction of all these lines, in face of the sirenuous opposition, open and concealed, of the great companies, and of some of the landowners, as well as t-urmounting great financial difficulties, in all of which he displayed a most, marvellous energy and ability. We must not forget that he was backed up by a small band of very devoted men in the fulfilment of these tasks, with whose names msny of our readers are familiar, such as the late Judge Johaea, Benjamin Piercy, David Davies, Thomas Saviu, and deceased's late brother, David Howell. Had it not been for the in- domitable will and energy of thcso men, Montgomery- shire might and probably would have been withoat railway communication to this day. In 1864 all the lines referred to except the Mid-Wales Railway were amalgamated in the name of the Cambrian Railways, Mr Howell continuing for several years to act as Solicitor to the Comsflnv. Mr Howell married Mary, daughter of Mr Edward Jones, a medical practitioner, of Welshpool, who died about six months ago, by whom he had a family of three sons and four daughters all of wbons survive him. Having purchased Rhiewport, Berriew, a delightful residence, he gradually srave ap the active duties of his profession to his brother- in-law, Mr. Edward Jones, and his sons, Mesera William and Chas. Howell, whom he had taken into partnership. About the year 1874, he was placed oil the commissien of tho peace. His active mind, howevtr, cunid scarcely remain quiet, and he continued to take much interest in publio and professional affairs. He was for a great number of years a member of the Welshpool Town Council, and filled the office of mayor, we believe, four times. It was during his mayoralty, if we are not mistaken, that the amithfield, the dramage and waterworks were carried out, and throughout hi" pub!ic eararet Mr Howell strenuously supported every scheme calculated to promote the welfare of his adopted town. He also represented Welsbpool on the County Council for the first three years of that body's existence. It only remains for U8 to add that in private life Mr Howell was of. most kind and generous disposition, and his 100. will be deeply lamented by all who were in any vesy brought into contact with him. On Thur-y last he had a seizure of paraiji; terminated fatally Sunday morning, when his long and Woorions career ended in perfect peace.
