Reference is also made in the second despatch to an attack on General Buller and to the fighting in which Lord Methuen was engaged on -the 5th inst. The reported retreat of the Boers to the northwards is not confirmed, but there has been little or no *,fighting -ince Thursday, when an atfack on the British nori horn position was repulsed. A report has reached Capetown that General Brabant, who left Aliwal North on Saturday with his Staff and all the available mounted troops, had inflicted a crushing defeat on the Boers at Wepener, but this also lacks official confirmation. Elsewhere the situation appears to be practically unchanged. The Boers are again reported to have: retreated from Wepener. TUESDAY. The announcement is contained in a message sent from Bloemfontein yesterday. On Saturday Colonel Dalgety, wiring ^rova Jammersberg Drift, seated that the garrison were well and that the Boers were apparently slackening in their attack. The latest news from Mafeking is that all was well on the 5th: inst. In Natal the Boers are reported to be retiring from: the Biggarsberg.
