Each person competing must use the coupon to be found on this page. No old coupon will be allowed, neither will any recognition be given to forecasts other than on the proper coupon. Each competitor must cut out the coupon, and fill in the scores, and forward in a sealed envelope to the Editor, COCXTY TIMES Office, Welshpool," by whom it must be received not later than first pout on Saturday morning in each week, the envelope to be endorsed .1 Competition." FOOTBALL NOTES. [BT "VETERAN."] The Welshpool team again distinguised them. selves on Saturday in a League encounter. At the present time the Welshpool players are in very good form and their supporters are sorry this has come so late in the season. All the same the players have proved conclusively enough that they thoroughly deserved their inclusion in the Shrop- shire League. Their opponents ou Saturday were the wooden spoonists, who did not bring all their best men, but Welshpool were also minus the sei vices of Heath, their sturdy back. From the kick-off it was clearly seen that Welshpool meant to show that their form against Iron-Bridge was no fluke. They certainly had the wind behind them and that was worth much. At first the players kicked coo strongly in passing and shooting, but when they had become accustomed to the wind their play was of a good character. The first goal was the result of a very ice bit of play. The Rev Merlin Davies received the ball on his wing, and, dodging all opponents worked the ball up to the goal liue. From here he sent such a correct centre in front of goal that Frank Davies had EO trouble in netting the ball with a shovel kick. The second goal followed soon afterwards. This time the Rev Merlin Davies, from a foul, ran through and scored a capital This was followed by the first really good r., n of Newport, but little Hamer easily removed the trouble and then followed a regular bombardment of Newport goal. At last half-a- dozen fellows tried to get the ball in, but all failed. Miller soon afterwards shot an inch or so wide, but made amends soon afterwards as he received a good pass from F Davies and drove it home as only Miller can. He quickly fetched the Newport custodian on his knees to save another. Fora minute or so Newport were in the running and White was called upon to save. Just now the homesters were a bit wild. F Davies had two good chances but was weak with his shots. Walter Davies returned the ball from nearly mid-field and dropped it on the bar just before the whistle blew for half-time. With change ot ends it was expected that Newport wouid change the aspect of the game, but the home- sters played even better footfall against the wind than they did with it. This Was Miller's half, and he did pretty well as he liked with the opposition causing much amusement and cheers by the clever way he ran round or through the Newport defence. He scored two clever goals and came near scoring auotiier couple. During this half Walter Davies played a really grand game, tackling, feeding and shooting well. Hutching, too, woke up, and played Hiost forcibly, once or twice too much so indeed. The Hev Merlin Davies pegged away all through, and he arid his partner made a good wing. Little mure need be said of the play as Newport were held well in hand, and were very lucky to get off so cheaply with a 5 to 0 defeat. All round the home- sters were immeasurably superior, and if more precision had beeu shown round goal they might eafil>- e created a record for theii ground in the scoring line. White had really nothing to do. Tom Jones ,,¡It! Hamer defended strongly and safely. Tom's play was good all through, and he was never at faul. Hamer improves and is now quite a styiisli back. Trie three halves were good in the second part. but in the first Walter Davies was the only man to sliiue. The more I see of this sterling haif, the more I regret he is not a few years younger. It would be difficult to spot a better half in Wales. He seems always in the right place and knows what to do with the ball when lie gets it. At the same time he plays the strict game and never takes the man instead of the ball.' The other two kicked and tacKled fairly well but seem to have little idea of teeuing. ihat, however, will come with practice. In the first half the Ltev Merlin Davies was the best of the 8 and he put in some very smart r'> r* eot^er wing Miller and his partner dld not have much to do and Miller took some little time to get into his stride. For Newport the forwards were decidedly weak, and the halves were mUch be,ow fchoge q{ Welshpool. The backs and goalkeeper defended well and could Lot be blamed in any way. Mr Gosson was a very efficient referee and did his work very smartly and coolly. The match at Iron-Bridge in the Wednesday Cup semi-final resulted in a draw of two goals each. Newtown journeyed there minus A If Edwards, but Goodwin took his place and acquitted himself splendidly. Winning the toss the visitors took advantage of the strong wind blowing and pressed severely though they. plnved about 20 minutes' before finding the net. C Jones, who played a very good game, added a second a few UlJfJlltes after- wards. During this half the homesters repeatedly kicked the ball into touch and into the next field. In the second halt with even a stronger wind at their backs the homesters subjected the Newtown defence to severe pressure, and now Charlie Parry and his mates proved their sterling worth as stubborn defenders. Qui:e half-an-hour's hard pegging took place before Iron-Bridge equalised. The bombardment may be imagined when it is stated that Charlie Parry strengthened the defence by bringing W Parry half-back. At the end of the usual 90 minutes, each side had scored two goals, and an extra half-hour was plaved. No further, scoring took phice and the teams will have to meet again at Newtown to-day. The game was stub- bornly contested from beginning to end, each side having great advantage when playing with the wind. Both defences were in splendid form. This result is rather different from the anticipations of tho Men of Iron, and I should like to ask my Iron- Bridge friend When is the four to one defeat of Newtown coming off?" If it could not be done at Iron-Bridge it is not going to be done elsewhere. Go in Newtown and reverse this! The Warehouse—who were decidedly lucky in defeating the smart little Night School ream-met the Cambrian North End in the Medal Competition last Saturday, and the result was a win for the latter by 2 to 0 The losers had most of the play, and had several chances of scoring. In the opinion of several, one of the North End goals was off side. But it is little use having most of the play. Goals are the things which count, and these the North End had. A pleasant friendly game was played on the Cricket field, Oswestry, on Saturday, between the Oswestry Olympics and Whittington. Unfort unmely the visitors were one man short, and had to pick one on the field. The teams were evenly marched though the Olympics got the only goal scored. This was secured by Hammond after a good run by Hallam and the right wing pair. The defence of the visitors was admirable and the forwards were good-exhibiting plenty of dash, especially towards the end of the game when they ought to have equalised. Richards was very prominent. For the Olympics Vowles showed himself to be a capable goalkeeper, and he stopped some ugly shots in the first half. Nield and Walsh were a capital pair, and the halves alsoitacl,-Ied and fed well. The left wing pair were the best of the forwards. Oswestry journeyed to Llandudno on Saturday but did not succeed in adding extra points. They have now played 25 games and their record it- a creditable one. Next season should find them much more prominent on the list and I trust quite as successful in Cup ties. Considerable interest is naturally being evinced in the final for the Welsh Senior Cup, wnich has to be replayed on Saturday (to-day), Chirk being agiiin the venue, when Druids and Wrexham, who have 011 several previous bccasions figured in the final, again meet to decide conclusions. Both teams will be strongly represented. Now I should be glad if my friends in Mont- gomeryshire, Cardiganshire, and Merionethshire will consider carefully and thoughtfully my sug- gestion as to a Mid-Wales League. The Shropshire and District League has not been a pronounced success, at least in this district, and I really think that a Mid- Wales League will be more interesting to us. At the same time the improvement in the game itself should not be left out of consideration If the League is to be established, now is the time to begin the preliminary work. The fight for positions in the First League has resulted in two good old clubs-Botton Wanderers and Sheffield Wednesday-being deposed. Let us hope that their stay 1U the Second League will only be a short one. Manchester City are safe for pro- motion and have gained a record, I think, in the number of points scored. NEWTOWN MEDAL COMPETITION. R.W.W. v. CAMBRIAN NORTH END.—These teams met in tht semi-final on Sat urday, on the Cunnings, in rather unfavourable weather. The Cambrian had considerably altered their team as compared with that which onsted the Lilly Whites, whereas the Warehouse representatives weie practically the same team that beat the Night School. Winning the toss the Camh, ian played down hill with a strong wind in their favour, but the Royalists had I much the better of the play for about three minutes, the Cambrian forwards rarely getting dangerous, whilst the Warehouse vanguard Dtarly scored on several occasions From a foul near in the Cambrian, however, got a goal, the ball being scrambled over the line, and the score at half-time was one to none in favour of the Cambrian. On crossing over, the North Eno'ers improved con- siderably and for some time bad quite their share of the piay. Another goal was scored, and though the man who headed into the net. was apparently offside, the. referee awatded the point. After thiV, however, the Royahsts pressai and should have scored on s-vioal occasions, Little shooting wide when within a yard or two from the goal line. DR. BARNARDO'S HOMES."—Special Meetings on behalf of the above Homes are to held in New- town and Welshpool next week. The founder of these grand institutions that have done so much good for the waifs and strays of the kingdom com- menced his life's work thirty-two years ago in Stepney, and since then over 35,000 poor wastrelt3, chiefly orphans, thrown on th cold mercy of the worid, have passed through the Barnardo Homes, and been educated and trained to fill useful posi- tions in life. At present there are 5,000 children in the Homes and branches. Dr. Barnardo is carry- ing on a truly national work, and deserves the practical sympathy and support of all who have the interests of children at heart. What he has saved to the country at large by his successful reclamation of waits is beyond computation, and we therefore invite attention to our advertising columns, and trust that the cordial support of the residents of both towns will be given to the meetings.

AGRICULTURE The spring-like weather which has been enjoyed overthe first third of the month of April has had a marked effect upon field crops. The period of active growth has now commenced in earnest, and it, may be hoped that no further check will be imposed through any decline of temperatnre. Much tough wind was experi need last week, and the greater part of the rain which fell was confined to the lat tei- half of the period. But the total precipitation for the week was altogether inadequate, and the loiiget- and warmer days which are approachii g must bring trouble in t,heir train unless arrears of rain- full are speedily made good. The face of the country ha* changed materially for the better since the end of March. Meadows and pastures have acqui-ed a healthi r colout- and the spring forage crops look more promising than at any previous period of the season. To stockfeeders whose big reserves of hay have almost di.-appeared the improved piospects of the green forage crops are very welcome. To farmers of arable land generally, however, the continued decline in the price of wheat forms a dark back- ground to the outlook. The average price during the first three months of the year has been about 10s per qr. less than in the corresponding period of last year, so that the larger yield of 1898 is bring- ing in less monev than the smaller yield of the previous harvest, while on account of its bulk it costs more to handle. At current vaiues it takes a sack of wheat to pay the average weekly wages of a farm labourer. Assuming so good a jield as 30 bushels per acre, which exceeds the average of the country, it would thus take the gram produce of over six acres of wheat-land to pay the yearly wages of one labourer. The Newtown Medical Officerin hi annual report points out that while consumption of the lungs has decreased in his locality to the extent of 50 per cent, in 20 years, consumption of the bowels has increased. The latter is due to feeding children on milk that has not been boiled, and if it were boiled for a single moment all trace of consumption of the bowels would vanish. He quotes Sir William Broad bent, who in regard to consumption says It is now definitely known that consumption is a contagious disease, that it is communicated from person to person and from animals to man, and that it. arises in no other way. It is not an in- herited vice in the constitution which declares itself in course of time, but whiie some constitutions are more proce to it than others, and whileau unhealthy mode of life and utiwholesorre sarrouudings predis- pose to its attacks, every case of consumption is derived from some pre-existirig case. One way in which the germs are disseminated is in milk. Cows. unfortunately, are very subject to tuberculosis, and sooner or later the germs find their way into th milk. Through milk so coutamiuated, infants and young children become affected with consumption of the bowels, tuberculous meningitis, and diseases of the bone. Until tnbereulois i eradicated from among our cattle an indispensable precaution is to boil or sterilise all milk, especially that given to childrell." Dr Sladen, Caius College, Cambridge, recently made some important investigations as to the pre- sence of the tubercle bacillus in the milk supplies of Cambridge. The tests were extensive, no less than 96 guinea pigs being inoculated with the miik from 16 different milk supplies and the results showed that 9 out of the 16 milk supplies were infective and no less than 23 of the guinea pigs developed tuberculosis. The experiments also show that the danger of the conveyance of tuber- culosis in the cream is greater than in the sediment, which is exactly the opposite of what was formerly believed to he the case. The treatment of cattle suffering from this dis. ease continues to be a matter of speculation, but one thing is certain that the air space and cleanli- ness of cow sheds will have to be looked to, and cattle will have to be provided with other sources of drinking water than the swamps of the fields.

KERRY HILL SHEEP. To the Editor of the COUNTY TIMES. Sir,A matter of some interest to breeders of above, and which cannot be too soon known, is the fact that this year at the Shropshire and West Midland Show, prizes will be supplemented by offering one for ram and another for ewe lambs, in addition to those of last year, and they may even yet, be still further extended. The following is a slight addition to a pamphlet published eighteen months ago a copy of which I am sending gratu- ituollsly to about 200 breeders of these sheep, with a notice of a meeting to be held at the Bear Hotel, Newtown, on April Farr Day, the 25th inst., at half-past two in the afternoon for the purpose of appointing a Secretary to the Kerry H ill Sheep Association to which all breeders are iuvited. I am glad to be able to record that the excellent prices made of this breed of sheep at Keny and other places last autumn have been well maintained up to our present spring sales. Mr J)hn Venables, Penygelly, Kerry, at the Christmas fat stcck sales by auction, at Oswestry and Welshpool, made 578 per head of yearling wethers; and Messrs Morris, Marshall and Poole, at the sale of stock of the late Mr Geoffrey Poole, cf Chilton, Shrewsbury, early in March, made 62s per head for pure bred Kerry Hills, as against 7( s for Shropshire ewesand lambs. The following is a shortened extract from the Farmer and Stock Breeder of this March :—"There are two parties they must sl.pply-the cousumer and the butcher. The weekly market reports clearly told that sheep of light weights were most suitable, as they were quoted always about one pennj, per lb higher than heavier weights. Some butchers would not take a sheep over two years old into their shop, and they gave several reasons for that. Light weights were therefore worthy of the feeder's attention. A young sheep was tender, even though newly killed, and thereby the meat could be kept short in bad keeping weather. Quarters of 10 to 14 lbs were nice family weights. If a leg had to be cut at the stifle joint, the part trotn there to the part where the carcase was quartered had to be sold at a reduced price, which, of course, reduces the value of that carcase. Young sheep had not as a rule much waste about them their flesh and fat were well mixed, and they never had any extra loose fat. Their fleece was the finest the first year, and they gave a quick return of money for outlay." At the very end of my last papei- I noticed the growing tendency of breeders towards weighty sheep, saying, tio butcher or epicure wants them over 15 Ills per quarter." A butcher here killing 200 sheep and 50 beasts a week in good weather and at certain seasons, meat of the very beat quality, to send to London, telis me the weight he prefers is 12 Ibs per quarter, and others say the same. When a man attempts to record incidents entirely from memory on any subject which has taken place during the past 60 years it is not likely that he will call to mind immediately all such as would strengthen his hands iu attempting to illus- trate it, though he may recall afterwards many things which have escaped his memory for a time. Such is my case in this psper, add to which it has been written and published at different periods and in parts, hence its disjointed and fragmentary appear- ance. In the early part of this pamphlet I laid great stress on the fixity of type, and stated that the present type of Kerry Hill sheep had taken 25 years of evolve, commencing about 1840. I wish to add that about 35 yeard ago Mr Pryce Hughes, at that time on the Gwerrngoe Estate, used to bring out his drawn ewes at Kerry fair of precisely the same type, with their beautiful speckled faces, are now, and have been ever since, the coveted pattern iu the Kerry district, and are now become almost universal. Mr Hughes used to top the market, nut by size, but by quality, shillings a head. Sir Waltei Gilbey says on horse breeding. The longer a type has been fixed the greater the certainty that the law 'like produces like' will be justilied; and to secure the best results it is of the first, importance that we should study the pedigrees of the animals from which we propose to bieed." I take the liberty of stating a fact here as to these sheep On Mr Lawtou Moore going from Kerry to Brampton Brian, he adopted the breed of the latter district, and after flirting with it for a few years he has gone back to his old love, the Kerry Hill breed. This love speaks volumes for the breed. Last September fair, at Kerry, he bought largely of the best ewes and rams in it. -+- VANE HALL (MACHYNLLETH) SUNDAY SCHOOL. To the Editor of the COUNTY 'j IMES. Sir,—The letter of your correspondent wito signs himself "Subscriber" writing on the ubject, of the above school in last week's issue, betrays had ignorance of the real facts of the cast, and is grossly guilty of a very ambiguous styie of con- veying his thoughts to the leaders. In the first instance, it might interest "Subscriber," and it might clear his mind upon the matter to know that the annual statement of accounts as published annually by Canon Trevor have not yet, been issued for the year 1898, so that it is hardly pos- sible or reasonable on the part, of Subscriber," or any other "scribe," to expect the Sunday School Accounts to appear in what has not jet been issued. But it might interest "Subecriber" and others to know that the annual accounts as pub- lished by Canon Trevor have hetu in the printer's hands some time, and I believe everything is ready to be published with the exceutiou of the Sunday School Accounts to which your correspondent refers. Now the question of "Subscriber" is a natural one. and I would ask with him, "Has Canon Trevor received the school statement of H('Cl IlDtS ?" -+- DEATH OF A PENYBONTFAWR LADY IN LIVERPOOL. Mr Sampson, coroner for Liverpool, held an inquest on Saturday on the body of Ann Edwards ^72), wife of Evan Edwards, farmer, Penj bontfawr, uear Oswestry, who died on Thursday from failure of the henrt's action just as a tvo minutes' operation on the left eye was completed by Dr Robert Jonos, assisted by Dr David Morgan, chloroform having been duly administered. Mrs Edwards was de. scribed as a strong, healthy woman. She went to Upper Pitt street, Liverpool, some time ago to undergo a treatment of the left eye, and a few weeks age successfully underwent an operation under chloroform.—The Coroner, in summing up, pointed out that deceased had passed very well t hrough a more severe operation a few week's be- fore, when she inhaled more than five time the quantity of chloroform given on the occasion when she succumbed. Before the second operation she was thoroughly examined, and her own consent and that of the relatives was wiilingly given. This was one of the cases which, unfortunately, happened occasionally, despite all precautions and skill, and perhaps had the effect of shaking confidence in the administration of a beneficent means of lessening human suffering. It was for the jury to be satisfied that the chloroform was duly administered, and that prompt measures for restoration were applied. -The jury at once expressed theirsatisfaction, and a verdict of "Died from sudden failure of the heart's action." -+

WEDNESBURY CHARITY CUP. IRON-BRIDGE v NEWTOWN. Two draws having been the result of the previous meetings of these teams this season, once in the Shropshire League and once in the present com- petition, both matches being at Newtown, much interest was manifested in the re-played semi-fiual tie at Iron-Bridge last Saturday. The result was a large crowd, who were during the progress of the match very impartial in their judgment of the the play of both teams. The wind was high and blew from the top to the bottom goal. Mr Bryan was the referee and the teams under his charge were: NEWTOWN. Goal, Goodwin; backs, M Pilot and C Parry; half-backe, H Tucker, C Jones, and E Davies; forwards, W E Pryce-Jones, E Morgan, A R Swettenham, It Morris, and W Pairy. IRON-BRIDGE. Goal, Leese; backs, Beardshaw and Oweu half- backs, Arkinstall, Gainham, and Thompson; for- wards, Spragg, Lloyd, Bethel, Goode, and Aston. Newtown won the toss and immediately the game opened at a fast pace. Tucker promptly checked the flying Aston, and Newtown threatened the Bridge goal. Leese cleverly fisted out a dangerous shot and the wind carried the ball out- side. The high wind prevented the home team from getting away, and it was some time before the visitors could accommodate themselves to its vagaries, and all the shots went harmlessly over the bar. At length W Parry broke away, and getting past sent in a rasping shot at goal. Leese was beaten, Imt the ball unfortunately struck the cross-bar and rebounded iuto play, where after a little scrimmage it went outside. This was a grand piece of work, and the crowd recognised it by hearty applause. Iron-Bridge pluckily en- deavoured to c unbat the elements and the Newtown defence, and they found these too much for them, though Aston made several praiseworthy attempts to stem the tide, hut Charlie Parry kept him well in hand. Ultimately the home team contented themselves with defending, and corners followed in quick succession. Charlie Parry's head was much in evidence, and but for the magnificent display of Leese the downfall of the home goal must inevitably have been brought about. Anyhow the homesters had several lucky escapes. Newtown were not to be denied, and W E Pryce-Jones from a corner kick dropped the ball right in goal. Charlie Parry aided its further progress with his head, and Eddie Morgan putting on the finishing touch opened the scoring for Newtown after 25 minutes' play. This nettled the home side, for they pulled themselves together and pre- sently Aston raced away with C Parry after him, and the International got the better of the bargain. The Newtown forwards were away again, and W Parry and Morris tested Leese with fine shots. It was, however, left to the half-back division to augment the score. Clem Jones succeeded in getting the better of Bethel and almost from the half-way line he sent in a shot which completely uzzled the burly Leese, and Newto\n were two up. Iron-Bridge were never dangerous in this half, but they were destined to have their innings later, and Newtown pressed up to the interval when the score stood Newtown 2, Iron-Bridge 0. For about five minutes after the resumption New- towu had the best of the exchanges, but they felt the cause of their opponent's trouble in the first half-the wind—too much to maintain any severe pressure. And so the home team took up the initiative and with this commenced about the best piece of defensive work seen on the Iron-Bridge ground this season. Charlie Parry was in rare form. Aided by the redoubtable Pilot and with a cool and determined custodian at their backs, these two for fully 25 minutes' kept at bay a crowd of forwards eager to pile on goals. Goodwin played a magnificent game in goal and more than equalled the more experienced Leese. It was simply the Newtown tables turned, only the Iron-Bridge for- wards had no disability in shooting. First came a shot from Aston and then from Goode. Another from Bethel nearly did the trick and all the while Goodwin was as cool as a cucumber and those shots he could not get away he threw over the bar. Once a rasping shot came in from Aston, and Goodwin wi! h no less than four players 011 him managed to get the ball out of a scrum." Finally in a scrim- mage Aston got close in and lauded the ball in the net. In three minutes' from the kick off Goode again got into near quarters and gave the custodian no chance with a fine shot. However there was a flavour of offside about this and Newtown appealed. Mr Bryan after a long consultation with the lines- men, both of whom, by the w:i\, were Ironbridge meu, allowed the poini. Then came the tug of war. Charlie Parry in a scrimmage in goal got hurt, and for some minutes the game was suspended. On resuming Aston was immediately pulled up for off- side and Newtown pressed for a time and W Parry and Swettenham very nearly came increasing the score. At the end of the hour and a half the ecore remained unaltered and the referee ordered an extra half-hour to be played. Ironbridge wou the toss and strove hard for the winning point, but the defence on both sides was superb and the teams will have to meet again to come to a decision. Final, Newtown 2, Ironbridge 2.

SHROPSHIRE & DISTRICT LEAGUE. WELSHPOOL v. NEWPORT. Consirlerable importance was attached by th." teams to this meeting since it would decide which should have the honour of becoming possessed of the wooden spoon. When Welshpool defeated New. port on their own mea tow manvof the former team's supporters considered it a fluke but the sub- stantial victory on Saturday more than doubly ratified the former success. Walter Davies made himself conspicuous for dis- possessing Macklin, and the Rev Merlin D ivies and Owen nearly h,oul!hl, the downfall of th NBwpnrt goal, the former dallying with the ball instead of shooting and so enabling the defence to clear. Awav went the visiting forwards and Hamer who found Harper much faster than himself was obliged to concede a corner. This was badlv put and the Welshpool attacking line had no difficulty in getting away. Their attempts tn get, to close quarters were rather futile, due in some degree to too much dallying with the ball. A foul spoilt Newport's chances of getting into dangerous quarters, and another put Welshpool iuto a good position, but Miller gave the filial touch just too soon and the ball went outside. Valter Davies was impassable and kept Owen and the Rev M Davies well supplied and from a race pass by the latter, Frank Davies opened the scoring after 15 minutes' play. A foul directly after th" centre kick marred the Salopian's attack. Tom Jones dropped the ball right iu the goal mouth, Plimmer kicked away wildly, and the Rev M Davies beat Price for the second time with a lovely shot. Two goals in almost as many minutes had an iuspiriting effect on the home players and Owen had hard lines with a swift shot which Price, with some difficulty, got away. Milier returned with a rtisping shot which, hitting the side post, rebounded into the goal mouth and the veteran Ward only just headed out in time. Fouls were frequei t and one or two against Welshpool looked dangerous, but Waltei Davie- cleared with rate jiidguieut. More attacks on Price, and Harper looked like getting away but the ball was again fouled Tom Jones's shot was obtained by Owen, who seemed determined to score. New port strenuously tried to stop the sliding scale aud but for the clever save of White, Plimmer would have done the trick with a scorching snot. White had not been troubled ere this, and as the air was rather chilly he was thankful for a little work. The home team pressed continuously to the interval when the score stood, Welshpool 3 goals, Newport 0 With the wind a d slope in their favour it was thought that Newport would materially reduce the adverse balance and a miskick by the home backs nearly brought this about. Tom Jones, howeve-, recovered himself and sent the ball well up the field where Withers nearly beat Price with a lightning sho. Welshpool maintained a vigorous pressure and Miller scored rumber four after Price had sived once, the ball striking the cross ba*- and rebounding into the net. Play quickly deteriorated and Welshpool slackened speed Newport profiting by the home teim's carelessness, pressed, and White saved a. dangerous shot frow Plimmer at close quarters. The efforts of the visitors in goal, how- ever, were poor, though the veteran Ward occa- sionally showed a. little of his former skill. Welsh- pool re-asserted tlemselves and as a result of a neat piece of work ber ween F Davies and Owen, Miller scored the fifth goal. For the next twenty- five minutes Newport struggled on gamely, but weri never able to penetrate the opposing defence which was too watchful. The game ended:- Welshpool, 5; Newport, 0.

THE COMBINATION. WREXHAM V LIVERPOOL RESERVE.—The visitors won by two goals to one. LLANDUDNO SWIFTS V OSWKSTRY. — Oswestry journeyed to Llandudno on Saturday with a much weakened team and suffered defeat by 3 to 0. BANGOR v. DTYUIDS. The Druids played their return Combination fixture at Bangor on Saturday, before a large crowd of football enthusiasts. The visitors were not fullv represented, being without Butler. Walter Davies, however, took his place and created a favourable impression. The opening exchanges were in favour of the Ancients, who quickly assumed the aggressive, and J Price used his cranium to fine advantage, but the ball went over the bar. For a while play ruled even, until the seasiders got away and made a determined rush on the Druids' goa', bat Arthur H..ghlis relieved grandly, aud eventually the visiting quintette raced away and made a charge on their opponents' citadel, but Vanghan was checked for an infringement of the off-side rule. Bangor transferred play and strained every effort to open the scoring. Lewis at length beat Sam Jones, but Vaughan quickly equali-ed, and for a time the visitors exhibited superior tactics, but failed to penetrate the opposing defence. Just before the interval Thomas registered a second goal for the homesters. Resuming after the refresher some exciting play was witnessed, and the Druids several times came near scoring. Bangor afterwards added to their score, and Ralph Joues on the visiting wing initiated a pretty run and beat the Bangor custodian with a brilliant shot. No further scoring occurred and Bangor wou a well-contested game by 3 goals to 2. CHIRK v. BUXTON. Chirk journeyed to Buxton on Saturday last but were badly represented, Edwin James and Sam Roberts being absentees. Tracey, who for some time has played in goal, played on Saturday as ceutre-forward in lieu of James. The visitors at the outset had the advantage of a strong wind and quickly assumed the aggressive, but the home defence proved impregnable. Chirk, however, continued to have the advantage and Owen and W WYIHe in the front rank put in some magnificent work. Meredith at back also excelled and fre- quently repelled several balling shots. Chirk nearly scored with a swift low grounder. A quarter.of-an-hour before the interval Chirk opened tue scoring from the result of a foul. Smith for the homesters equalised in the next minute. Taylor gave Buxtou the lead and they led at the interval by two goals to one. On resuming the strong wind told hard against the visitors, and with great diffi- culty they got away and registered their second goal. Buxton, however, improved considerably and ■cored twice and thus won by four to two.

Rosenthal, the well-known Polish chess master, resident in Paris since 1867, was engaged about ten years ago by Prince Balaschoff as his professor of chess at X25 per month, to be iuc, eased to £ 40 per month whenever the Professor travelled with his :,upil. Pupil and Professor, according to La Strategic, were on the bestot terms for many years, they were even engaged in collaboratiou on a grand chess treatise, when, suddenly, a few months ago, Professor Rosenthal received a somewhat uncere- monious dismissal. He sued, in response, for X750 back salary fixed under the written agreement, £ 50 for a final journey to Stuttgart, and CI,250 for his unjustifiable dimissal and loss of profits on the projected treatise. The Civil Tribuualllllowed the first demand, but rejected the two latter. We believe that this is the first time that compensation for chess services has figured so definitely in a court of law. The use of tobacco in this country appears to be steadily increasing. Last year the quantity con- snmed per head of the population was lib 13ozs. This is lib more than in 1840, and whereas the revenue then from tobacco was 3 millions of money, last year it amounted to over lO millions. Last year's consumption is the largest on record. The revenue from tobacco has doubled iu 40 years.

FRIENDLY MATCHES. PANT Y. OSWKSTRY CRUSADERS.—Played at Pant on Saturday. Oswestry played with the vviud in their favour after about five minutes' play the homesters scored with a good shot. Oswestry soon pulled themselves together, and after good combina- tion found the net ou two occasions. Play then became more even, aud before half-time was called Denny scored another for the Visitors. In the second half Oswestry piessed, but failed to beat Thomas. Final—Oswestry 3, Pant 1.
