REPRESENTATION OF MONT- GOMERYSHIRE. SELECTION OF A LIBERAL CANDIDATE. A special meeting of the Montgomeryshire Liberal Association was held at Newtown on Saturday, mainly for the purpose of selecting a Liberal candidate in the room of Mr. Stuart Rendcl, who has been raised to the peerage. There was a very large attendance of delegates from all parts of the county. The chair was taken by Mr. A. C. Humphreys-Owen, president of the association, who was very warmly received. In opening the proceedings, he said they had met on an occasion of no common interest, both to the country at large and the county. While the country had lost the services of their great leader, Mr. Gladstone, they in that county had at the same time lost the admirable and devoted services of their late member, Mr. Stuart Rendel. He begged to propose that a suitable address be pre- sented by that association to Mr. Gladstone on his retirement (cheers). Mr. W. Theodore, of Llanfair, seconded the reso- lution, which was carried with acclamation. Mr. Richard Lloyd, president of the Newtown Liberal Association, moved that an address be sent to Mr. Stuart Rendol, congratulating him upon his elevation to the peerage, and expressing the warmest thanks of the Liberals of Montgomery- shire for the great and signal services rendered by him to that county and to Wales during the period he had been their representative, and regret at the loss of his services. Dr. Edwards, of Llanfyllin, seconded the reso- lution. A number of delegates afterwards supported the resolution, and several resolutions to a similar effect, passed at meetings of local associations, were read. Among the speakers were Messrs. Edward Jones, Trewythen; D. Evans, Cenmaes; T. Theodore, Llanfair; Ellis Roberts, LlanfyIIin R. Rees, Machynlleth; Joseph Richards, Meifod ■ N. W. Fairies-Humphreys, Montgomery; and R. Morgan, Bahaillon. The resolution was carried with acclamation. The next business being the selection of a candidate, Mr. Humphreys-Owen vacated the chair, and Sir. N. W. Fairies-Humphreys, was appointed chairman pro fCIn. J The hon. secretary read several letters of apology for absence, in which cordial approval was expressed of the proposal to invite Mr. Humphreys- Owen to become the Liberal candidate. Delegates from all the polling districts of the county reported strongly in favour of the selection of Mr. Humphreys-Owen as the Liberal candidate, and many of them read resolutions which has been passed in support of it. The chairman said he knew that it was the opinion of a great many Tories that Mr. Humphreys-Owen was far and away the best candidate the Liberals could select. Mr. C. R. Jones, of Llanfyllin, in proposing Mr. Humphreys-Owen as a fit and proper person to represent the county in Parliament, said that he was a thorough W elshman by birth, sympathies and aspirations, and was perfectly safe and sound upon every Welsh question, particularly education land, and clisestablishment.-(Cheers.) He should not be satisfied if they did not return Mr. Humphreys-Owen by even a larger majority than that recorded for Mr. Stuart Rendel at the last general election.—(Cheers.) Mr.Edward Jones, of Trewythen, in secondino- tho resolution, dwelt upon the services rendered by Mr. Humphreys-Owen as chairmau of the County Council and in other administrative work. The Rev. G. P. Thomas (Aborhosen) said thev would like to hear an exposition of Mr. Humphreys- Owen's views, especially upon the land question. Mi". Humphreys-Owen who was again cheered, said he "was very glad that the selection of a candidate was not going to be a mere formality. He con- ceived that the first duty of the Liberal paity was to fulfil its pledges to Ireland on the subject of Home Rule. He said this not in the least because he wished to postpone the claims of Wales or of England, but because he considered that the Liberal Administration was in duty bound to give the Irish question primary consideration. The next question was one immediately affecting Wales for next in order of time he placed Welsh Disest- ablishment.^ (Loud cheers.) Speaking for the nation, and especially for the Anglican Church, he welcomed disestablishment as the greatest boon that could possibly be conferred upon them. He thought it was almost impossible to overrate the mischief which the Establishment did to the Church by divorcing' the minds of her clergy from their pioper sphere of duty in ministering spiritual consolation, giving moral guidance, and mingling in the social life of their fellow-citizens, and turn- ing them to barren controversies in which Christian forbearance and even the virtues of good citizenship seemed to be lost to view.—(Cheers.) He believed that disondowment, while it would benefit the nation, Would be an equal benefit to the Church. At present the property which was devoted by pious ancestors for the good of the people at large, was monopolised by a single sect, and it would only be an act of justice and repara- tion to take the revenues now employed for the purposes, of one religious body, and to use them for purposes in which all good citizens and all good Christians could agree. The great political and social position, income, and power which the present system of establishment conferred upon bishops were too often used in a manner which demanded reprobation rather than respect. It was an evil thingfor the rest of the clergy that they should be placed in absolute possession of afreehold, from which they could not be disturbed, even in cases in which they might not only be inefficient, but also sources rather of strife, envy, aud hatred in their parishes, than leaders in all spiritual and moral excellence (cheers). He believed that dis- endowment-, by bringing the clergy more decidedly under the influence of public opinion, in making them dependent to a large extent upon the freewill offerings of the people, would help to raise their general character, and thus benefit both the Church and the nation at large (loud cheers). In referring to the land question, Mr. Humphreys-Owen said ho had always acted upon the principle expressed by one of the greatest English statesmen in the words, The plough is the first charge on the land." It was to the industry, outlay, and skill of the tenant farmers that they, the landowners, owed whatever prosperity they enjoyed. Time was when it was believed that the system of leaving tenant farmers to the absolute mercy of freeholders was necessary to secure the freeholder in the en- joyment of his rights and property. He owned that many years ago he himself entertained somethino- like that opinion. But now, while he regarded an occupying freehold as the ideal form of tenancy, he had become convinced by the force of events that it was impossible that the existing law of landlord aud tenant should remain unaltered. He believed that the tenant should be secured in full enjoyment of the improvements he had made, and that he should not be evicted from his tenancy without just and reasonable cause (cheers). To this end he was in favour of resorting to methods of arbitration or conciliation, which had been em- ployed with admirable results in other branches of industry. The county councils might be utilised for this purpose. He believed that in 99 cases out of 100 the fact that such a law was in existence would be sufficient to regulate the relations between landlord and tenant, and induce greater stability and harmony between them (cheers). The bitter- ness and rankling of feeling caused by litigation was slow to pass away, and therefore should only be a last resort, aud he believed that through the intermediary of county councils differences of opinion might be settled amicably. With regard to tho labourers, he owned he was shocked, pained and astonished at Mr. Lleufer Thomas's report upon the condition of the agricultural labourer in Wales. It seemed to him it was one for which all concerned should blush, and he was sure that farmers and landowners alike had only to become acquainted with it to be determined, as far as they could, to provide a remedy (cheers). The Act of Parliament which Mr. Gladstone had just passed in spite of the bitter and insidious opposition of the House of Lords, would have, he was convinced a powerful effect upon the labourer. He believed it to be a most admirable thing for everybody con- nected with the land that the labourer, like the landowner and farmer, should have a stake in the country. The provisions for enabling parish coun- cils directly to deal with allotments would secure that object. A system which would enable labourers to keep one or two cows would benefit both them and their employers, for the great trouble of the farmers was scarcity of skilled labour, especially in relation to dairy-farming, and the freeholder would benefit by everything that made the lot of those about him more prosperous and happy. He was old-fashioned enough to believe that the system of landlord and tenant well admin- istered was a very reasonable and wholesome one, but, on the other hand, there had continued to cling to it since feudal times a certain idea of supe- riority and inferiority. He himself had always done his utmost to discourage that feeling, and he hoped that it would soon pass away altogether. The only relation there should be beyond the pure business relation should be that between fellow citizens and Christians the recognition and good offices from equal to equal and not from superior to inferior (cheers.) He thought some liberal pro- vision should be made by the law for enabling the occupying tenant to convert himself into a free- holder. The germ of such a provision existed in the Small Holdings Act, and the principle which was already at work in Ireland might be advantage- ously extended to England and Wales. Passing to the question of temperance he expressed himself in favour of applying to it the principle of local gov- ernment. While real reform must primarily comc from within, and must be the work of individual conscience, and will, legislation could do something to remedy this great social evil. Legislation could remove largely, if not entirely, temptation from those who were prone to fall into it. He hoped they would pardon the little bit of egotism in tell- ing that one of the first things he did when he suc- ceeded to the property he now held was to close a public house in a neighbourhood where there were some four or five others (cheers.) After further remarks on the question of local option, Mr. Humphreys-Owen referred to the subject of educa- tion. In that county both parties were engaged very harmoniously in the work of establishing in- termediate schools, although in one or two instances slight friction had arisen through excess of zeal on the part of some of the clerical party, which he hoped would be discountenanced. Elementary education appeared to him to be extremely un- satisfactory. He thought the control of elementary education should no longer remain in the hands of so-called voluntary managers. While admitting that they had done a great work in the past, the system had out-lived its time, and he believed it would be far better if they would now hand the work over to free communities. Mr. Humphreys-Owen was loudly cheered at the conclusion of his address. Tho Rev. G. P. Thomas asked whether Mr. Humphreys-Owen was in favour of the establish- ment of a land court ? Mr. David Hamer said he was a strong land re- former. He disliked the term Land court," but he thought boards of conciliation or arbitration should have power to enforce their decisions. Far- mers were now paying rent out of capital, and that was the road to the workhouse. He hoped the Welsh Land Commission would approve the prin- ciple embodied in the Crofters' Act, which enabled the Commissioners to cancel arrears of rent. He would suggest that the Board of Arbitration should have retrospective powers. Mr. Humphreys-Owen, who was again cheered, said that where it was discovered that rent had been excessive, and arrears had therefore accumu- lated, he was of opinion that those arrears should be cancelled. He believed that that was the prac- tice in every well-managed estate, and the law ought to extend it to ill-managed estates. He wished to make it quite clear that he contemplated two different tribunals, the first a conciliation board which should have no coercive power, and the second a tribunal having full power to carry its decrees into execution. Mr. Thomas and Mr. Hamer said they were per- fectly satisfied with Mr. Humphreys-Owen's reply. Mr. Hugh Lewis having spoken in support of Mr. Humphrey-Owen's candidature, Mr. Richard Phillips, of Newtown, asked whether Mr. Humphreys-Owen would support the forward wing of the Welsh Liberals in forcing from the Government immediate legislation upon the ques- tion of disestablishment. ? Mr. Humphreys-Owen, in reply, said that the idea that there was a backward and a forward party on this question was merely a Tory device (cheers). He believed that there was no difference whatever among Welsh members as to forcing the question of disestablishment upon the Government, but he must ask them to trust them to act according to the best of their judgment as to time and season. There was no man keener for disestablishment and disendowment than he Was (cheers). Mr. Rjphard Lloyd, in sUPPorting the resolution, referred" to the fact that Mr. JJnmphrevs-Owenhad succeeded Mr. Acland as chairman of "the Central Board of Intermediate Education for Wales. Dr. Edwards, of Llanfyllin^ also supported tho resolution, which was enthusiastically carried, the whole meeting rising and loudly cheering. Mr. Humphreys-Owen bri«fly returned thanks. It was agreed to defer the meeting of the Selec- tion Committee for the Montgomery Boroughs which had been fixed for Tuesday. The Liberal candidate has appointed Mr. Edward Powell, solicitor, of Newtown, as his election agent.

LIBERAL MEETING AT BERRIEW. On Tuesday night a very enthusiastic meeting was held in the Assembly Room, Berriew, in sup- port of the candidature of A. C. Humphreys.O'.vcn, Esq., Liberal Candidate for the County of Mont- gomery. The room was quite full. The chair was occupied by F. W. Fairies-Humphreys, Esq., and amongst those present were Rev. J. E. Williams. Newtown Rev. J. Jones, Berwyd Messrs. Hall. Llwynycrwth; Evans, Dyffrvn; Pritchard, Pied House; Jarvis, Keel Davies, Valindre; Lewis, Bryn Jones, Facliir Jones, Cefnrallt; Hughes, Munllyn Gittins, Llandinier Hughes, New House Lewis, Keel Embry, Keel; Davies, Bryn; Jones, Penygareg; Lewis, Brithdir; Gethin, Rectory; Thomas, Pandy Richards, Tanyfron; Mrs. Humphreys-Owen, Misses Humphreys-Owen, Mrs. Davies, Springfield, &c., &c. The CHAIRMAN said that many changes had taken place in the political world during the last few days. changes he might say, which concerned them —concerned England very materially. First was the withdrawal from the leadership of the Liberal party in the House of Commons of their great and noble leader Mr. Gladstone (loud cheers). He had withdrawn after a very long and arduous life spent in tne service of his country, but he had withdrawn with the full powers of his mind left to him and he (the speaker) thought with the full powers of his body. He had withdrawn but he (the speaker) doubted very much whether he had withdrawn altogether. He did not think that it was possible that Mr. Gladstone, with all the strength left to him could leave the House of Commons, and he firmly believed that some of these days and that very soon, they should have Mr. Gladstone back amongst them full of life and a considerable amount of kick left in him (applause). Another great change that had taken place which concerned Montgomeryshire very much and also Wales generally was the withdrawal of Mr. Stuart Rendel, the member for this County from the House of Commons. He had fought them two or three very great battles. The first one they should never forget. It was very plucky of him to come as he did as a perfect stranger. He had fought two great battles since and they were all deeply grateful to him for what he had done, not only in regard to the interests of Montgomeryshire but in the interest of the whole of Wales (applause). He had now however retired from the House of Com- mons and had been promoted to the House of Lords, Her Majesty having conferred a peerage upon him, and he might say it was their wish and their desire that he should long live in the House of Lords and do for them there what he had done in tho House of Commons. Especially did he say this in one particular matter and that was that he might see, through the House of Lords and that very soon, a bill for the Disestablishment of the Church in Wales (cheers). That change led to another which certainly concerned them very much and that was that it enabledhem to see on that platform Mr. Humplireys-Owen—(cheers)—as their candidate and he thought he might say the future member for Montgomeryshire (loud cheers). It was not for him to come to the parish of Berriew and to point out to them the great merit of Mr. Humphreys-Owen, for he had grown up amongst them. He had, at all events for the last 20 years, since he settled down there permanently, taken upon himself a very great part of the business of this county (hear, hear). He had been first and foremost for the advancement of everything, for the advantage of the people. Taking the matter of education, he (the speaker), ventured to say there was nobody in this county who had dono so much for the course of education as Mr. Humphreys- Owen. Take again the transaction of the county business. He spoke as being a member of the County Council since its formation, of which Mr. Humphreys-Owen had been the Chairman, and he ventured to say that there was no single member in the County Council, no matter what his political opinions might be, who would not say that Mr. Humphreys-Owen had conducted the business of that body in a way that had been satisfactory to every member of that body, and he had certainly brought great honour indeed to himself (hear, hear and cheers). Nobody could say that he was not the most perfect candidate for the County that they could possibly find (hear, hear and cheers). He thought the probability was that the majority of them there agreed with Mr. Humphreys-Owen. He (the speaker) did most thoroughly in everything that he did politically. In all the great questions of the day he agreed with him, as regards Dises- tablishment, One man one Vote,"—(hear, hear)— the Liquor Traffic, Home Rule, in fact, the whole of those large questions which were before the country at the present time. Mr. Humphrey-Owen as they heard him speak at Newtown the other day, had certainly not gone back in reference to these questions since 1893, but on the contrary, had decidedly advanced. He was sure, they were all very glad to find Lord Rosebery, had said he had pledged the Ministry to the policy laid down by their great leader Mr. Gladstone, and they were determined that they would cany the whole of these measures, and carry them as quickly as possible. Mr. Humphreys-Owen he hoped would be there, and he was sure if he was there he would do his utmost to assist in carrying those measures (cheers.) Mr. HUMPHREYS-OWEN, who was loudly ap- plauded, said he had to thank the chairman for his extreme kindness in speaking of his qualifications for the position to which he aspired—to be the representative of this county. He wished most heartily they were still as they were a fortnight ago, that they still had amongst them their leader. their trusted guide and friend, the man who first rescued them from political domination and the man whom they had followed for so many years. He had found Mr. Rendel one of the truest friends that ever man was blessed with. He knew that. the political separation that had taken place between them was not a separation of their friend- ship with Mr Rendel. Having thus paid a very in- adequate tribute to their late county member, he could not leave the subject without referring to the great leader of the party. During the time which was the life-time of many men he had been engaged in active political life. He was one of those statesmen who had helped to make the name of Great Britain illustrious (cheers.) His great achievemenis would be written in the pages of history, and he thought the most triumphant achievement of all would be that none of those who were closely associated with him ever lost that respect for his uprightness and integrity, as well as that admiration for his transcendant talents. He looked forward with great confidence to the future of the Liberal party and of Lord Rosebery (cheers.) The Government would be pledged to push forward Disestablishment and Disendowment. Ho thought it might be seasonable for him to say something on the subject of Disestablishment now. There were many he thought, who believed, notwithstanding the "many speeches they had had, that Disestab- lishment. and Disendowment meant the entire abolition of religion. They heard that there would be no spiritual provisions whatever for the people and that the Churches would be put down and the clero-v left to beggary. Nothing of the kind was goii to happen, but Disestablishment would place every religious denomination on the same political ground They would know that in earlier times the Church and the State were co-extensive for tho simple reason that if a man disagreed with ,i,e clerical authorities, first he was treated as a traitor and then handed over to be dealt with as such. They mighi well believe that there were not many Non-conformists at that time. Nonconformity was of a comparatively modern growth but with the advent of Protestantism—the advent of the right to private judgment it was inevitable that Noncon- formity should take a prominent place. There were some things in the State Church which were simply galling to the other Christian faiths, some being that the custody of the parish register was in the hands of the clergy, and it was only by special iicense that Nonconformists were allowed to use the churchyard, and under special conditions. Disestablishment would d oaway with all these things. It would place every religious denomination on the same political ground, and" he believed bv doing so it would greatly increase the good feeling between the different relio-ious bodies, and put an end to all unpleasant rivalries, and greatly advance the cause of religion. In London the Church was a purely voluntary body. They had there side by side with the Parish Church, the Nonconformist chapels, clergy and Nonconformist ministers occupying the same position. They never heard of such anomalies as enforcement of the rights to the graveyard. The consequence was that the Church in the large towns was very popular, and he should think that it would be very difficult to get up a really serious cry for Disestablishment in any of the large towns, because they had got it already, that was to say, they were working side by side with goodwill. As regards the question of Disendowment it was not fair that certain endowments should be used by one body. They had the great anomaly of large funds which might be devoted to the purposes of the nation at large, being used in Wales, at any rate, for the support of one single sect. Now Disendow- ment proposed to do away with that anomaly. It proposed dealing fairly with those who had wasted their best years in the service of the Church, but after dealing in perfect fairness with those, to devote the money to general National purposes, and so Churchmen no less Nonconfarmists would benefit. Again let him tell them that so far at any rate as Welsh Liberals were concerned there was no intention of laying hands on the fabrics of the Church. He did not suppose there was a single Welsh Liberal of any weight at all in the councils of the party who had ever dreamt of anything but leaving the fabrics in the hands of the congregations that worshipped in them (hear, hear and cheers.) Well, they must have Disestablishment and Disendowment, and have them soon (cheers.) Having dealt with the question of education, Mr. Humphreys-Owen proceeded to speak of Local Government. It was his duty. he said. to look through the accounts of the County Council since its commencement for the purpose of pre- paring the estimates for the ensuing yeal, anc. he was glad to see that the expenses of the county had decreased since 1889, and that the average rate of expenditure was £1,000 a year less than before (hear, hear aud cheers). He contended that if local self-government was successful with the nation and with the county it should also be suc- cessful with the parish (hear. hear). Education should be in the hands of the parish itself, and that was another great reform upon which the heart of Y>~ales was set and which they hoped to obtain. The Parish Councils Act or Local Govern- ment Act had done a great work or perhaps he should be correct in saying laid the foundation of a great edifice. Mr. Gladstone's Government had given substantial proof also of its willingness to redress the grievances of the tenant farmer by appointing the Land Commission, which was now wending its way throughout Wales, and it had shown to the satisfaction of every man that the position between landlord and tenant required some improvement. It was necessary for legisla- tion to ameliorate that state of things. Referring to the House of Lords Mr. Humphreys-Owen asked who were the House of Lords ? There were many able men in the House of Lords, but they were out of touch with the feeling of the people. They were not in a a position to understand what was going on—(a voice: They are not in working order)— but a member of the House of Commons was con- stantly brought into contact with the whole mass of the constituency. What was going to be done with the House of Lords he did not know. It might be possible that the Second Chamber would be dispensed with altogether making the House of Commons altogether responsible. That would not be worse than the present state of things. A great majority in Montgomeryshire would mean a great deal in London, because it would mean that the county was still staunch and firm to the prin- ciples of which it had adopted and testified to when it selected Mr. Rendel and showed its adhe- rence to by the increasing majorities by which he was returned. Mr. Humphreys-Owen resumed his seat amid loud cheers from the audience. The Rev. J. E. WILLIAMS, Newtown, said that he had to justify his presence on that platform. People contended that religious people should have nothing to do with politics, and that especially ministers of the gospel should keep clear of politics of all kinds. If religious people were not to have anything to do with politics, and if ministers were not to have anything to do with politics, he wondered how they were able to justify the presence of Bishops in the House of Lords. He supported Mr. Humphreys-Owen's candidature because he was a Welshman. He thought as a rule, of course there were exceptions, persons of the same nationality and blood and race should re- present that nationality or race, and he rejoiced to think that Mr. Humphreys-Owen was a Welshman. He also supported him because he was a Mont- gomeryshire man (cheers). They had a man in the county competent to represent them in the House of Commons. In addition to that he sup- ported him as an educationist. He (the speaker) was one of those who waited on Mr. Gladstone in connection with the Elementary Education Act of 1870. He had worked with Mr. Owen for over 20 years in connection with the University College at Aberystwyth, and he could testify to Mr. Hum- phreys-Owen's great worth and efficiency in con. nection with educational work. He trusted they were on the eve of an educational millenium, and by means of schools and college he trusted that Wales, which to-day was eminent for its piety, its religion, and its Godliness, would be eminent in the coming time for its intelligence, its knowledge, and its learning. He supported Mr. Humphreys- Owen also as a Liberal. He was a Nonconformist Minister, and everything they had had from a political party had been from the Liberal party. They had had no abuse removed, no grievances re- dressed by the Conservative party. As a Liberal Mr. Humphreys-Owen was in favour of religious equality. For instance, a registrai must attend a marriage at a Noncon- formist chapel, but he was not present at a marriage in the Church of England. Either send the registrar to church and chapel, or keep him out of both. Churchmen could compel a landlord to sell them land to build a church on, but Non- conformists could not do so to build a chapel on. Was that fair ? (No.) He regjoiced to think tha in this session of Parliament they were going to have a Bill introduced dealing with the Established Church in Wales. In 1816 and 1824 Parliament paid a million and a half of money in order to erect parish churches. They were willing to give the Church people the building in which they wor- shipped at present, but as far as the churchyards were concerned, he contended that theyhad aright to bury their dead there, inasmuch as they were parisn burial grounds, and that Nonconformist ministers should have a right to conduct services there. What were they going to do with the clergymen ? They were appointed to a living, with every reason to believe that they would enjoy it as long as they lived. Were they going to be compensated for such compulsory disturbance ? Yes they were going to have fair and adequate compensation. Fair play to the clergymen—fair play all round. Then there were the private endowments given to the Church, and it was only fair they should have those. Then there were the tithes. He contended that tithes were national property, and should be used for national purposes. The tithe was made compulsory in 1789. It was diverted from being- paid to Romau Catholics at the time of the Pro- testant reformation, and if Parliament could divert it from Roman Catholicism then, they could divert it to national purposes now. Tithe was paid in kind until the year 1836. There were those again who had bought tithe or inherited it, and they also must be compensated, for they had come fairly to the property which they owned. K ow, after all these deductions, he contended that the balance of the tithe should be used for nntional purposes. He wanted them to support Mr. Humphreys-Owen in the coming election, and return bim with at least 1000 majority (loud cheers). Mr. JONES, Penycoed, moved That this meeting is of opinion that A. C. Humphreys-Owen, Esq., is a fit and proper person to represent this County in Parliament, and pledges itself to use every legi- timate means to secure his return by a larger majority than has been obtained at any previous election in this County." Mr. JOHN HALL in seconding the motion, hoped that they would all put .their shoulder to the wheel and do all they could to return Mr. Hum- phreys-Owen. Rev. F. S. JOXES in supporting the resolution, said he had simply to ask them to give their votes for Mr. Humphreys-Owen (loud cheers). He (Mr. Humphreys-Owen) was a steady and sturdy veteran in the political field, and a man who had devoted all the past years of his life in the interest of his country. He supported Mr. Humphreys- Owen especially because he believed in the old Welsh motto Trech gwlad nac Arglwydd." Mr. EDWARD DAVIES, Velindre, also supported the motion. Mr. W. DrSLEY also spoke, and 5he motion was carried unanimously. Rev. J. DAnEs proposed a vote of thanks to the Chairman, which was seconded by Mr. JONES, Y nchir. The CHAIRMAN in responding expressed Mr. Frank Edwards's regret that he was unable to be present, and after a few more remarks the meet- ing terminated with cheers for Mr. Humphreys- Owen. ———— LLANFAIR CAEREINION. CONCERT.—On Friday, a concert was given in the Board Schools by the Llanfair Choral Society, the conductor of which is Mr. E. Dryhnrst Roberts. The soloists were Mrs. Roger Edwards of Llanfyllin, and a party from Newtown. Mrs. Edwards, with her beautiful soprano voice, brought down the house each time she sang, and the songs and part songs given by the Newtown visitors were a treat very much appreciated, and loudly encored. Not- withstanding the boisterous night the room was quite full.—Mr. G. Edmunds, expressed the thanks of the Society to the audience for their attendance, and^said he was pleased to see the High Sheriff of Montgomeryshire present. (Cheers.) The per- formers deserved great praise for their sweet music, which was much appreciated by the audience. (Cheers.)—Mr. Hilton expressed his great satisfaction for the concert. If the concert was successful financially as it was in attendance and performance, at result must be very satis- factory indeed. (Cheers.)—Mr. Keedwell, Newtown, was the accompanist.
