Frau von Stein had never alluded to that memorable conversation on the day of the declara- tion of war, but she could not help being touched by the girl's incessant devotion to herself, and un- consciously fell into a way of talking to her of her absent son, sometimes even reading the short pre- cious letters aloud. At last, one afternoon, she received a visit from the stout Frau von Zettingen, who had been afraid or the French over-hearing the "Wacht am Rhein." I have no wish to leave my comlortable home at our embassy,"she began, but it is really impossible to remain in this place any longer. My dear Frau von Stein, I hear on the most, reliable authority that Paris will be in a state of siege within a week Will you not make a great effort and attempt the journey home. They say the French will shoot all the Prussians, or imprison them, or something. I am as brave as most people, but I have no wish to have my house turned into barracks for the Na- tional Guard. No I am going to some place where these nasty little soldiers are afraid to show their faces. Frau von Stein smiled sadly. "You are very kind, but any journey is an impossibility for me, my dear friend. No one will want to hurt a dying woman, for that I am dying I know very well. It was quite in vain for Frau von Stein to laugh at the idea of a lengthened siege equally useless for her to endeavour to frighten Theckla with stories of the privations she migh have to undergo in the event of such a contingency. For once the girl broke her silence concerning Otto. "You know, I promised him to take care of you," she said; and after this remark Frau von Stem made no effort to alter her decision. u rh5rce ,was £ reat excitement in Paris on the bright beautiful September morning when the siege was actually commenced but this very rapidly sub- sided. The proclamation of the Republic had cheered the drooping spirits of the people amazingly, and they had regained their belief in themselves and their own valour since Badinguet had failed them. There was an enormous army of National Guards, besides the Garde Mobile, safe within the walls; and the supply of flour was said to be far beyond the need of even a protracted siege. The weather was warm and sunny, and to all appear- ances Paris was thoroughly herself, buoyant and cheerful, and taking no thought of the iron grasp of the German legions closing round her. Gradually, however, the dulness born of insatiable desire for news of the outer world began to be felt. Presently gas was rationed, and the fitreets neglected; so that the aspect of the capital was changed, and it looked forlorn in the gusty autumn evening by the dim light of a few straggling lamps. Reliable intelligence of what was going on beyond the barriers was succeeded by wild rumours. Then meat and milk began to mount in price, and Frau von Stein was overwhelmed with applications for money from Germans who through poverty or necessity had delayed their departure tmtil too late, while she gave so generously that her house became a perfect rendezvous for her distressed compatriots. Then came December with frost and snow, and distress began to be keenly felt. Eggs and poultry were almost unattainable, and fuel grew scarce and costly. Jacques and Pierre, footmen to Frau von Stein, became too loyal to live with a Prussian. They belonged to a club of advanced Communists, and announced one morning in rather unsteady voices that they had sworn to perish on the ramparts with the National Guard. Then Annette, whose grief and fury after the taking of her native town had made her almost frantic, gave notice that she could remain inactive no longer, and went off to save France by haranguing anyone she could get to listen to her, and donning the smart dress of a vivandtere, the remaining servants promptly following her example. Theckla had not tried to persuade them to remain; their insolence had become unbearable, and she was glad to engage two poor Germans to do the "canty work of their little household. Dr. Ferronays came daily, but he shook his head over the condition of things. "The Republic cannot save us from the Prussians. I was an Imperialist, as you know but even I must perceive that this second empire corrupted onr society to the very core. It made government untrustworthy, and demoralised our army. It is not the mere waving of a tricoloured flag that will cleanse and purify us all in a moment. The people changed the name of the Rue de 1' Imperatrice they call it Rue Uhrich: can that wipe out the chronique scandaleuse of a profligate court ? I am a patriot; but though I am not a democrat, I am not blind." When Christmas Eve came. Theckla arranged a little festal supper, and made the salon cheerful with a few flowers and wax candles. The two servants came upstairs afterwards, to join in a Christmas hymn; and then Theckla, with a flushed face and beating heart, sang the German thanks, giving for victory: Now thank we all our God, With hands and heart and voices." Her clear, sweet soprano swelled high and jubilant above the resonant chords of the piano, Frau von Stein listening in. admiring silence. Suddenly, the triumphant music was rudely interrupted by a hubbub of coarse voices; the front door opened violently, and footsteps were heard in the hall. There was a dreadful silence in the little company; and presently, as the noise grew louder, one of the servants began to sob hysterically, "It is one of those dreadful clubs who want to kill all the Germans ir Paris, so that the soldiers may have more to ea, What will become of us? Theckla took advantage of her momentary solitude to pos- sess herself of a small revolver, which she carefully concealed before following the uiwelcome visitors. Having soothed the scared Liese, into some sort ol usefulness, she made her way into the larder, and thence to the dining-room with a leg of mutton, some ham and sausages, and a cheese. It looked strangely unfamiliar; all the chandeliers were lighted and a full length portrait of the late General von Stein seemed to be taking stern note of a dozen uniformed Irenchmen, as they sat round the large table, last occupied by Ottc and a brilliant circle of diplomatists. Bidding Liesel fetch wine, she herself arranged the pro- visions, the voracity with which they were attacked proving the alleged starvation to be something more than a mere figure of speech. Among the band she indignantly recognised the ex-footman Jacques Couteau; but it was no time for remonstrances, when her chief object was to keep them good-tempered. When they began to drink, she felt her fears returning, though she masked them effectually. "Bon soir, Messieurs — bon appetit," she said politely, and was moving towards the door, when the captain cried, raising his glass of sparkling Moselle, To the health of Madmoiselle la Prussienne." The toast was drunk with noisy acclamations, and then the giver of it advanced towards Theckla rather unsteadily You will give me one kiss before we start, pretty one, he said insinuatingly. "I would rather have one little kiss from that rosebud mouth than all the money-bags the old lady could offer." Stand back she commanded. You see this come but a step nearer and I She held the revolver at arm's length, and the gallant captain recoiled amid a murmur of applause from his followers. It would have been easy enough for either of them to wrench the weapon from the small hand that held it, but the love of effect is ineradicable in Parisian hearts, and this sort oi coup-de-thefttre was sure to be effective. Besides, as La Rochefoucauld sagely affirms, there is some- thing not wholly displeasing to us in the misfor- tunes of our best friends, and the captain, like all inferiors raised to command, was very masterful, a fact which made his subordinates rather glad to see him snubbed. Come, no offence, Mademoiselle," he said, trying to look as if he had not been in earnest. She read the newspaper with a greedy anxiety to glean some precious grain of truth from unbeliev- able masses of vague rumours. From Le Figaro, to La Patrie en Danger, they were all eagerly trucu- lent, but somehow nothing ever seemed to come of the spilling of oceans of printing ink. She there- fore received the awful announcement with philo- sophical composure, and having Seen Friedel serve the relays of wine she had fetched from the cellar, she made her way upstairs. Here she encountered the flustered Liesel, who exclaimed, Heaven be thanked that you are alive, Fraulein 1 the gracious lady has recovered. She is asking for you." Theckla hurried into the room to find Frau VOD Stein sitting up on her sofa, her face drawn witt the acute pain caused by so unwonted an exertion Where are these Frenchmen ?" she asked eagerly In the dining-room drinking," answered the girl, trembling a little at the thought of the drunken captain but I heard them say that we need fetch no more wine, for thdfc they meant tc finish the night in the cellar." His house was liable to be searched by the Republican Govern- ment at any time as that of an imperial physician, I owed him three or four years of life, and mucb devoted friendship; he was indebted to that miser- able Eugenie for his son's commission. If these soldiors go to the cellar they will probably search for money; and for aught I know my poor old friend may be severely compromised if the letters fall into their hands. What can We do ?" The soldiers, in their gay uniforms and képis, holding candles which shed a pale and uncertain light over it all, and revealed them seated on boxes or barrels drinking the rare old wines and chanting lustily, Ah Ie vieux Bismarck, que c'est un vieux coquin," or roaring out the Marseillaise," if too far gone to remember anything newer. She herself, with her ruffled golden curls, looked like the stainless lady in the wild masque of Comus." She escaped as soon as possible, and with her heart beating wildly against the letters concealed in her bodice, put the rescued treasures safely under the white pillow of her own little bed. Then she returned to Frau von Stein, who was lying back on her couch unnerved and exhausted, and scarcely able to murmur her words of fervent gratitude. They stayed together all night, and it was not until the cold late dawn of Christmas morn- ing had stolen through the curtains that the revel lers departed. At eight o'clock Dr. Ferronays arrived in a condi- tion of extreme agitation. "They tjil me, von Stein, that a party of soldiers searched the house last evening. Did they find the diamonds ?" "No, my friend; they are safe, thanks to the courage of little Theckla." And then she told the story of the dark hours that had seemed so endless, and how she herself had probably been saved from im- prisonment. The old gentleman leant down and kissed the girl's hand with French grace: Oh, my dear, I have done you a wrong. I was sorry when Raoul told me that he loved you. But, if my poor boy comes back alive, how proud I should be to see him claim such a bride. But Frau von Stein looked at the pretty down- cast face by her side, and said softly, I am afraid octor, there is no hope for your brave Raoul. Theckla and my Otto love each other; and if it pleases Heaven to give us peace, and bring my son back safely, she will be my daughter." PART III.—PEACE. "The memory of this supreme brief moment lingers still. LEWIS MOKRIS. Paris had capitulated. The ceaseless roar of the cannon was succeeded by a dead silence. The last wild sorties had been made in vain, and grim famine had forced open the gates, kept shut with a dogged resolution that had amazed the world. The sky was blue and clear, and the sun shone brightly; yet shops were closed, and the streets deserted and melancholy. There was an air of dolorous expectancy on the haggard faces of the few passers- by; faces pale and pinched by privation, and expressing bitter hatred or impotent wrath. The event, the mere possibility of which had been o indignantly denied by Parisians, had come to pass; and the despairing hope that by some un- guessed means France might be spared this crown- ing humiliation was at an end. The victorious Prussians, with the King whom they had crowned Emperor of United Germany at Versailles, were to make their triumphal entry into the beautiful capital, to pass under the magnificent arch erected by the first Napoleon to commemorate his glory, as the conquerors cf the third Napoleon, and the destroyers of that glittering bauble, the second empire. A day to be marked in white for ever in the annals of Germany, to keep green in French hearts the smarting memories of Woerth and Grave- lotte, of Mars-la-Tour, Metz, and Sédan. Frau von Stein bad lived all through the priva- tions of the siege, through the terrible last days when it was only by the help of the American minister that they could obtain food for a house- hold of Prussians. Her ceaseless prayers had been answered, that she might live to see the Emperor and her son—to join in the great Te Deum of victory, and hear the German music echo through the Champs Ely sees. Though fearfully weakened, she was able to re- joice when Theckla drew back the window-curtains and let in the sunbeams, with bright tears of happi. ness shining in her eyes for Otto was safe, and the wound in his left arm, which had been his only injury, was nearly ligaled. After that eventful Christmas, Frau von Stein had gently told her of his love, and to-day, to-day she would see her hero. The hours of waiting seemed very long. Frau von Stein lay on her couch wrapped in rich furs by the open window, with a smile of contentment on hex face, which changed to a look of positive rapture, as at last, faint yet clear sounded the tramping of horses, and the strains of the "Pariser Einzug Marsch." Theckla stood bare-headed on the balcony, which she had hung with laurels and flags. On, on passed in perfect order the stream of infantry and oavalry, till at length came a snowy-haired horse- man, who glanced up at the one house decorated in his honour. Es lebe der Kaiser cried Theckla; and, carried away by her enthusiasm, she flung down a green wreath at the feet of the royal conqueror. With that kindly courtesy that makes the Hohen- zollerns so beloved of their people, he signed to one of his aides-de-camps to pick up the garland, and gracefully saluted the fair young patriot. But Theckla scarcely noticed her sovereign's gracious movement, for he was followed by a bevy of officers, and among them, looking up with eager eyes, rode Otto von Stein. An hour later, and he was with them. When he met Theckla, there bad been no need of words between them. The sad memories of the anxious past vanished in the sweet present, as they came together to the dying mother. Both knew that the long-expected end was very near as Otto knell beside her; but she was quite calm and collected and spoke to him clearly You will be married a once, Otto-s soon as I am gone. I shall be con tent to leave you with a true wife to make youi future happy. Theckla, love my dear son always be as good to him as you have been to me." Joy sometimes kills, and in the passionate joy of seeing Otto restored to her the silver cord snapped, and she passed away almost without a sigh. And this was how it came to pass that a few days later Theckla Berghaus and Otto von Stein were quietly married at the American Embassy, where the nationality of the bride gave her the right to be united by the Minister in a time of necessity such as this. It was a short, hurried ceremony, with only Dr. Ferronays, Friedel, and Liesel as witnesses; and when it was over, Otto said a little regretfully, Ours has been but a sad wedding with our dear mother lying in that gloomy Pere la Chaise, and I have brought vou no present, dearest." But Theckla raised her trustful blue eyes to he! husband's, and said, as she laid her hand upon his well-worn uniform, Otto, how can you say that t What jewel could compare with this one 7" and she softly kissed the iron cross. 4

BOW STREET. FUNERAL.—On the 22nd inst. the remains of Mrs. Elizabeth Jones, aged 86. were interred at Llan- gorwen Churchyard by the side of her husband who predeceased her 18 years. The funeral was a very large one and the deepest sympathy was manifested by all in consequence of the sad accident which brought about her unexpected death. Revs. 11 J. M. Griffiths, Llanfihangel, and W. Evans, Llan- gorwen officiated. On Sunday last Rev. J. M. Griffiths, Vicar, delivered an eloquent funeral sermon at Llanfihangel and in a touching way re- ferred to the good qualities of the deceased who had been a communicant for 70 years.

PENGARN. LECTURE.-On the,, 21st inst. at Garn Chapel Rev. E. Rees, Dyfed," delivered an interesting lecture on the subject Journey through the Land of Canaan." The lecturer gave a very interesting outline of the places mentioned in scripture. The proceeds are towards getting an organ for Beth- lehem Chapel, Llanfihangel.

THE SCIENCE OF MEMORY." LECTURE AT On Monday evening, in aid of the funds of the Dispensary, a lecture on the Science of Memory," was delivered in the Art Room of the Free Library at Welshpool, by the Rev. Idrisyn Jones. The fact that this gentleman's lectures arc always of the most interesting and intellectual character sufficed to bring together a large audience who listened with rapt attention to the lecturer's remarks, which were not only explanatory but served to enlighten the audience as to the sure method of improving the worst of memories. The YICAR (the Rev. Grimaldi Davies) presided, and in his introductory speech, said he was very pleased indeed to see so many present especially when he considered it was Monday night, which was a most inconvenient night for most people to attend. It gave him great pleasure to accept the kind invitation of Mr. Idrisyn Jones to preside on two accounts, first on account of the subject which had been chosen for the lecture, and secondly on account of the object for which the collection at the close was to be devoted. The Welshpool Dispensary was one of the most popular and useful institutions in their neighbourhood it conferred a great benefit on the poor of the district. It was an invaluable benefit to them, and he for one knew full well what a great boon it was to the poor of the town. Therefore everything done to help for- ward any such most excellent object was deserving of their assistance. The Science of Memory was a very interesting and a very practical sub- ject, and one which they all ought to know some- thing about, especially in an age like ours of such activity and energy. By the memory they meant one of the faculties of the mind and by means of the mind we were able to treasure up, and to re- call things we had learnt. The other faculties of the mind depended upon this one, so much so that without it all the other faculties could not carry on their work. In regard to the memory there were many curious phenomena. No doubt they had noticed that the memory retained some things far better than others. There was a very curious thing in connection with this faculty of the min Sometimes he was asked the name of such and such a person and he could not remember the name although he could remember the first letter of the name. There were many other curious phenomena but he thought the Rev. Idrisyn Jones would enter fully into the subject and would entertain them and instruct them how they might one and aliform rules and principles by which they could strengthen their memories (applause). :iC::=.i:=- The Rev. LECTURER, in beginning, said he had three purposes which he wished to aim at. The first was that he might contribute towards supply- ing an intellectually pleasant evening, the second, to lend a helping hand in the direction of memory, and the third he wished to accomplish was, with their kind assistance, to help the funds of the' Welshpool Dispensary (applause). The memory was that operation of the mind by which they could recall anything belonging to the past; 1 and everybody had some past which he or she would like to recall. Happy wore the people that had a sweet past that was worth recalling. There was a poem written by Rogers entitled The Pleasures of Memory." He had sometimes thought. there was wanting another poem to deal with the other side, with the suitable title The pains of forgetfulness." If we had no memory, all our past would be a mere blank. That fact alone was sum- cient to impress upon them all the supreme impor- tance of memory. But for memory the past of our life would be merely as a dream that vanished as the sleeper awoke. He thought that in the faculty of memory they had an exhibition of the goodness of the Creator and it was bound up with the higher purposes of Christianity and religion. Where was the seat of memory ? Socrates called memory by a very expressive phrase, the Secre- tary of the Soul," someone that wrote down everything but where did that secretary live, where did he keep his office ? Now that had per- plexed the philosophers of ancient peoples for there had been a great hunt to find out where was the seat of memory. The ancient Greeks main- tained that it was between the eyebrows, the ancient Romans had a theory that it was located near the ears, and the Chinese, with their usual originality, had told the world that the seat of memory was in the larynx (laughter). So when they had a sore throat it would be disadvantageous in the Ase of memory (laughter). Strictly speaking there was no faculty of memory at all, that was looking at the brain from a phrenological point of view, as divided into organs. He ventured to say that each person in that assembly had a magnificent memory, and each had also a very bad one, because as the organs were different in their power so memory was different in different organs. To illustrate this, supposing there was a little girl who had a large organ of music she would remember tunes. Memory went according to the faculties where their faculties were good, and he ventured to think that every man on earth was a genius in some direction 01 another—and of course every woman was— where the organ of the mind was strong, in that direction memory was good, and where the organ was weak in that direction memory failed. There was in regard to memory what he might call a law of affinity, so that in the audience there were some people that would remember some things better than others. The question was how to cure the bad side of memory. Of course they would not expect him to recommend certain medicine as was recommended in the sixteenth century. In this land there was actually recommended for the aid of memory, roast fowls, young hares, apples, nuts and good red wine (laughter). He though the last recommendation was a mistake as the man who took good red wine often forgot to go home to his family and to pay his debts (laughter). In the beginning of the nine- teenth century physic was actually recommended for bad memories, sneezing powders, ointment, wash, &c. He had nothing of that kind to offer them. There was no doctor in whom he had so much confidence as Dr. Science. The point in re- gard to the memory was to be able to recall things when; needed, and the great law by which we were able to recall matters to the mind was the law of association. The lecturer pointed out that if they wanted to call up a thing they must tie it to something else, and stated it did not matter how ludicrous the connection might be. In order to prove that this method was a good aid to the mem jry he requested some of the audience to give him a number of nouns. They did so, and the lecturer gave them back in the order in which they were given, through having associated them as they were made known to him, with words with which his memory was familiar. The audience were also exercised in this method, which proved a powerful aid to the memory, parallel columns of nouns being written on a blackboard. The audience having associated the different words of one column with the opposite words of another, one column was obliterated, the result being that they were able to supply the words which constituted the column wiped out. The rev. lecturer in con- clusion hoped the young people would lead noble lives so' that the memory of their past mitrht not be painful, and proposed a heartv vote of thanks to the Chairman, which was carried the CHAIRMAN responding and proposing a voto of thanks to the lecturer. -+-

Humphreys with being drunk and disorderly on February 17th.—P.C. Rees, who proved the case, said he found the defendant on the side of the road near the Moat Farm.—Fined 3s. and costs. DRUNK IX CHARGE. Thomas Hughes, The Graig, Llanfair, waggoner, was charged by P.C. Rees with being drunk- in charge of a waggon and three horses in Severn Street on February 22nd. Defendant was fined 5s. and costs, the magistrates considering the case a most serious one. ° "FRENCH LEAVE." Mr. John Morris, The Foundry, summoned three boys, Alfred Roberts, Alfred Mills, and John Jones, for trespassing on his land and damaging the grass by playing football on it, on Feb. 18th.—It was stated that the boys were not only in the habit of playing football on the land. but of running after the sheep which was proved by P.C. R. Jones. The case was adjourned for a fortnight to see how defendants would behave in the meantime.

John Owen, of Closygraig Maenofferen, Blaenau Festiniog, met with a fearful accident at the Yotty and Bowydd Slate Quarries, Blaenau Festiniog, on Wednesday afternoon, which proved fatal on Friday. It seems that while unfortunate man was in the act of oiling," the engine was set in motion and he was drawn into the fly wheel. At the inquest on Saturday a verdict of Accidental death was returned.
