THE CHAIRMAN. The Secretary read a letter from the chair- Olan (Mr J R Bache), regn tting his inability to attend Qwing to his numer >us du ies. He ft<3ufd that the Knighton branch hid decided to pay over 920 to the pool fund, and he "ould forward it to the Secretary when re- vested. SECRETARY'S REPORT The Secretary, in his annual report, said that for fivt- yeart3 in sucC ..i¡iIl there had been a steady increase in the membership of the Union, and during last year they had a greater inei-k ase than in any year ,ince 1913. Their total membership stood at 891, being an increase of 155 for the yeir. Amongst the Baost progressive branches were Kuighton 114, Hay and Glasbury 107, Crickhowll 107, Builth Wells 100, and Newbridge 101. The branches had contributed £ 13 16.. Od towards the Parliamentary levy; under the recon- struction scheme that payment would be dropped. Thtir luceipis auiouuted to X122 3s 6d, and after paying their debts there Was a balance of jE44 2s lid. Under the re- construction scheme, when every braneh pooled their balances, they úillJ have a Wanco of about £ 100. On th,. year's work- ing the balance was £ 14. The Secretary gave an outline of the work t' ne by the TJ,Dioi, during the year in various directions "'ith bentficial effects. Ah >o the future, they would have more funds at their back. and could embark upon more nsks in the interest of members. Mr 0 W Davies, who presided at the outset, said the report was very pati-f ct ry, and they could congratulate themselves. Some of the branches had done very well, but he thought Brecon and Sennybridge should do better. They could do a great deal mnr in the future In propaganda work with a greater balance at the bank under the pooling arrangement. He saw that Kent was advertising for a man to work up the county, and that Gioucenter were able to put Y,200 in the War Loan. They ought to be abl,, to do something in that direction. A body that represented only one. Seventh of the industry it worked for could not expect to dictate to the Government. Kad v properly uiguuiSi.Ci these Ex- ecutive Committees and other administrative Committees would have been in th(-ir hands. On the whole they could congratulate the Secretary upon the work of the yenr. Mr J R Griffiths proposed that he report be adopted, and in seconding, Mr W Price said it ought to be printed and circulated amongst non-members. OFFICIALS. On the proposition of Mr J R Griffiths, seconded by Mr Charles Jones. Mr J T Jack- son, Knighton, was unanimously re-ele:ted president. Mr W Price proposed that Mr 0 W Davies, Aberduhonow, be chairman for the ensuing year. This was seconded and carried unani- mously. Tiie following wtre elected vice-presidents Messrs D W Price, Ntutvrhart., CrriY; D Woodings, Newbridci,, H Sharp, Caban. a 0 and Jenkin Evans, Great HnuFe, Talgarth. ALONE IN LONDON." Much difficulty was experienced in selecting a representative on the General Committee of the National Farmer*' Union. and although several gentlemen were suggested, they all declined. One member said that it there was another with him he would n t mind going, but he would not, go alone. (Laughter), A Member Alone in London. (More laugi,te-). The Secretary suggested as 11 way out of the difficulty that they should that day elect two delegates for the annual gen- ral meeting in London, and that, they should be Mr J W Jones and Mr 0 W Davies They could select tb-ir representative at the !I{>X" meeting. This suggestion was eventually agreed to, and Messrs 0 W Davies and J W Jones were elected. SECURITY OF TENURE. The Secretary of the National Farmers' Union (Mr H W Palmer) wrote forwarding a resolution passed by the Land Tenure Com- mittee suggesting to the Government that War Agricultural Executive Committees should at once have powers conferred upon them to veto any notice to quit to a tenant farmer who, in their opinion, was farming his land properly and same power to veto to be continued until a measure giving proper se- curity of tenure is passed into law. The Chairman spoke in favour of the reso- lution, and itl"!t il. was important for the tenant. The Secretary suid he did not think it would be wise to move any resolution on the matter. They must not show any vindictive spirit. They claimed to have their Union and other people claimed their own privilege. Mr Sharp said if they were going to establish a Chamber of Agriculture at Brecon on the same scale as they had done at Here- ford, the sooner they nipped it in the bud the better. One of the members stated that neither Mr Miller or Mr David Jones was a member of the Farmers' Union. The Secretary suggested that he should be asked to write to Mr Miller and Mr Jones stating that they considered that the Farmers' Union sufficiently represented agriculture in the county. Janeq)c Church Sunday School took at the S Ila]], on ¡1. 30'h uli Tho donor crT Th.. fenj on this occasion was Mr G. Uvedale Price, of Bath, a well known and popular visitor to the Spa As usual the attendance at the prize giving was large. The Vicar (Rev. J. E. Lloyd) presided, and the hall was prettily decorated with flags emblematic of loyalty. Miss Rawlins, principal of Beach Court School, presented the prizes, nnd thanks to the able assistance of her pupils, an excellent pro- gramme was provided which added greatly to the success of the evening. Tbe Vicar, in his introductory remarks, made reference to the gratifying increase in the number of scholars during the past year and said that during his utne year's mmistry in Llanwrtyd he had not seen so many healthy looking children present as upon that occasion. Statistics showed an alarm- ing decrease in the Sunday schools in England and Wales, but there was a decided increase in the Sunday scnool of the Church of S. James's, and he had not the least hesitation in saying that the success of the school in their parish was due in a very great extent to the work nnOA hy the (super- intendent and the able support of the teachers. Mr Harry Mack, Sunday School Super- intendent, reported on the year's progress, and the increase in the number of scholars which he attributed to the ever ready response and help received from the teachers. A vote of thanks to Miss Rawlins for pre- senting the prizes was proposed by Mr Mack and seconded by Mr Jeynes, a like compliment being paid to Mr Price, the donor of the tea. The number of marks gained by the scholars in order of merit was as follows — Eva Blewitt, Kathleen Davies, and Sheila Davies 312 (maximum); Gwennie Evans 309, Norah Davies 307, Victoria Davies 306, Annie Davies 305, Dorothy Price 300, Mary Herbert 294, Violet Williams 282, Katie Hope 276, Violet Jeynes 270, Eileen Preece 270, Osborne Davies 263, Dennis Carey 257,

BRECON BOROUGH POLICE COURT
BRECON BOROUGH POLICE COURT Monday—Before the Mayor (Mr W F Parry deWir.to"), Dr. i4 P Francis, Messrs. J C B Morris, Evan Morgan. H C Rich, Wm Williams and W J Nott. A SORRY BUSINESS AT DTN A ROAD. Sarah Llovd, Dinls road, was summoned by Alice Lee a neighbour, for assaulting her child on January 30th.—She pleaded not guilty. The Deputy Clfrk (Mr W Jones-Williams) said a peculiarity of the case was that Mrs Leo summoned Mrs Lloyd for throwing a bottle at the baby she was cawying in her arms and was proceeding as the child's next friend. Complainant said that there appeared to have been a squabble between, the children and following this defendant threw the glass jar produced, which caught the baby on the back of the he-^d, with the result thqt there was a lump there now. Cross-examined, witness denied that she threw stones at defendant's children. She also denied that she went to defendant's house and threatened to strike her with a stick. Mfs Ruth Davies, 4 Prospect Row, gave corroborative evidence and added that the glass jar was thrown fr-m a bedroom window. P.C. Hibbert was also called for the I prosecution. Defendant giving evidence said complainant struck her with a stick and also threatened her children with stones. Witness then went upstairs and threw the glass bottle, but she had no iutention of hitting the baby. The Deputy Clerk The bottle was in- tended for Mrs Lee ? We!l, yes. (Laughter). Janet James, residing with defendant, gave evidence in support of her story The Nial u, :id ef ii -.n' would be fined in the costs, 6s. Both the parties' husbands were away fighting and they scarcely had a sitting except they h:d either Mrs Loe or someone from the district there. Their husbaEds being away, the Bench appealed to them to try to live in peace. They should settle their differences in a more amicable way and try to kct-p their temper for the o. good of everybody. AND ALSO FROM SILVER STREET. Sylvian Sandford, Prospect row, sum- moned Emily Parry, Silver St., for assault. Complainant, whose husband is serving with the colours, said she was looking in a shoe shop when defendant "walked on to her" and asked what she had to say, and before she had time to reply struck her across the face and the baby across the head. Defen- dant ran at her again, but her sister stopped her In Harriet Holland gave corroborative evidence. Defendant, who said her husband was also in the army, admitted that she pushed com- plainant because she called witness's mother names. Evidence wasalso given hy Harriet M Hammond and Margaret Morris. Defendant W88 fined 5s, and the costs, and the Mayor said the Bench would have to take stronger measures to stop these petty quarrels. The parties' husbands were away and the responsibility rested on them to live a decent and quiet life and let their husbands come back to tidy houses. Scarcely a court passed but what they had those cases before them, NO LIGHTS. John Pugh, Closcedi, Pontfaen, was sum- moned for driving a horse and trap without a light. P.C. Hibbert gave evidence and defendant was fined 10s Ivor Jones, Alltcerrig, was summoned for riding a bicycle without a rear light and was fined 10s including costs. Andrew White, Ynysmynach, was also fined 10s including costs for a similar offence.
