IRON.
IRON. BARCOW-CN-FURN^R, Monday.—The attendance on 'Charge this mi), was and little new busine was t ans.-o,ed. Daring the week, however, a few orders for Nc. 1 Bremer iron have been booked .t £ 4 59 a too at the wo-k*. In to go iron little business is being uexoriated. and the sales which are being made are all on account of the present l"ililed requirements of co&> ci'TR-rs. Stocks of on are not large, but the output of iron rema'os g eaily restricted. Sanguine hopes are ex- pressed, with Lo neÜ year's trade, and should an improved demaiid spring up, makers will be in a position to compete mora fullv with the demand than thiv hitnerto have been. Steelmakers, iron shipbuilders, and raflway rolling stock companies have large orders in hmi .i. anu will be well Pm I .d during next year. The finished iron trade remains (itoll, and many works sis closed. Iron ore sells slowly. The demand for manu- factunog coal remains restricted, but house coals are in good request. The shipping trade is dull. MIDD'^ESBRIUGH, Tuesday.—There was a smaller attendance on'Change his afternoon than for some time past, The periou of I h year being the oause. There was but lille inquiry for iron, as bu>m<^s is now largvlv at a standstill, there is, however, a declining ten lency with both pig and finished iron, and rates in both iiis, avim were lower than last week. The general price for No. 3 was 60s., and No. 4 forge 56s. 6d. net cash, though price step largely unsettled, ana it I" difficult to fix upon, a reyulir.qu,,tatiot). In finished iron there is no quotable altera; IW from last rates. The slight improvement noticed in the rail trade is coufirnied. The other branches are mostly in fair condition. Many of the rnauuJac urers do not care to take more work till they know th wiges rate for the coming quarter. WOLVEKKAMPTON, Wednesday.—The ironworkers are blockaded by the frozen canals; operations at the bl, st furnaces are impeded, and mills and forges can do but little, wanting coal, which they usn get by boat. The present arrangment regaiaiing finished ironworke.j' wnges is likely to termioate at midsummer. BIRMINGHAM, Thursday.—The iron trade is still stagnant, and for the present the majority of the mil's and forces remain idle. Orders for manu- factured iron have bee§ very scarce for some time, aod^V^ prospects for the new year are anthing but ti satisfactory. Comnaau, iisarked bars are uominiy.j! £¡1 per oti, the races declared at last quarter-day, with the usual e,ra for the Earl of Dud ey's aad B. H. Merchants are withhold- ing their pu ceases, in view of the impending change which is probable in the proposedreductioa of 10 per ceot. in the ironworkers' wages. The is increased weakness in the market for pig iron, though coai, owing to the frost aud the demand for domestic consumption, is very firm in price. At a special delegate meeting of the men 0'1 strike in the Forest of Dean, on Wednesday, a resolution was adopted pledging the men not to resume work upon any condition except at the old rate of wages.

COAL. NEW COLLIERIES IN SOUTH WALES.—Over 50 new v collieries are being sunk in Glamorganshire at present. « In sever >1 instances, nearly £ 100,000 has been spejjt, andST four orfive years already occupied. One of thel.,Vcii important of these sinkings was proved a su. ce9^*>on Monday. Nixon, Taylor, aqd Co. having won the cète. brated 4-foot vein of steam coal. At Merthyr Vale the pit has been upwards of six years sinking, and co >1 was won at the depth of 480 yards. SOUTH WALES COAL TRADE.—A large meeting 0: delegates representing part of the collieries throughou South Yvales and Montgomeryshire was held at th British Workman Assembly Room, Merthyr, on Mondaj The results of the votes recorded were-For arbitratior 11,704; neutrals, 455 willing to submit to the reduc tion of 10 per cent., as offered by the masters, 3,550 and against accepting the reduc iot, 27,611: 8,7f were reported as uot having meived any notice reduction. AGRICULTURE.
AGRICULTURE. The Mark-lane Express says- The short frost wi have done immense good. Carting mauure was carric t oniapidly; threshing was done well enough to makl wheat worth another shilling per quarter the forwar plant had a salutary check; and every furrow got pulverisation beyond the art of man, while slugs a other vermin were effectually routed. The markets URual have been quiet, but rates have remained prel firm, and they have now come to a range beyond pub comphint. As to the croppf wheat, the preponderat is on the side of p'enty. Aboye an average has become the general report. Growers this year have mi tlj reaped four quarters, where for several years past they have only gathered three. Thus the public gains lM per acre without damage to the farmer, who now has the option to hold for higher rates. The barley crop stands second, and this pays by its price; and though beana, peasjand oats have more or less gone short, they alao bring more money. We have also started well for the next crop. It has been a splendid seed time, and there is already a fair prospect for spring corn." THE HOME LABOUR MARKET still shows considerable depression, and reduced wages are being reluctantly ac- cepted in several important branches of industry. In the North iron-workers are still suffering much from want of employment, and no immediate revival of trade is expected. At Sheffield most of the heavy industries are working at lower wages and longer hours; the building trades have, however, given notice of an advance. 111 Scotland the malleable ironworks are dull. At Glasgow the stnke in the shipbuilding yards has been brought to a termination, the men agreeing to accept a reduction. In the textile districts hands are fairly employed, anA the building trades generally throughout th country art well engaged. Shipwrights have been advertised for at the Government dock-yards. Under the head of Emi- gration, the requirements of the Cape of Good HOI" Government may again be noted. An extension of rail- ways in South Australia will also mvolve additione. labour. Reports from the United Stat- s, and specially the iron districts, continue discouraging.-The Labovt News.
