According to the quarterly return of the Kegistrav- General, the population of the United Kingdom in the middle of 1885 is estimated at 36,325,115 per- tone that of England and Wales at 27,499,041, of Scotland at 3,907,736, and of Ireland at 4,918,838. In the United Kingdom the births of 293,248childrea, and the deaths of 196,760 penons, were registered is the three months ending 31st March. The recorded natural increase of population was thus 96,488. The registered number of persons married in the quarter i ending 31st Deoember last waa 140,974. The birth, rate in the United Kingdom in the first quarter of 1885 was 32 "7, and the death-rate 22*0 per 1,000. The marriage rate in the fourth quarter of 1884 wa.IS.IS.. I 1,000.
