DAMAGED ROADS.— Judge Mooo, at the Conway County C-ouit on Thursday, gave judg- ment in the ca-o of the Colwyn Bay Urban Dis- trict Council against Jcweph Gray, haulage (-on- tractor, in which the Co unci 1 claimed JB29 17s 2d in respect of damage alleged to have been caused on their ruuds in Upper Colwyn Bay by cxceesire weight and extraordinary traffic. His Honour said ho load no hesitation in saying that tho da.ma.g'e to the roads had been caused as stated by the plaintiffs-the result of extra- ordinary traffic within tha meaning of the Aot. The darn/ire was not really in dispute except j oItS to the item of £ 1 5. 6d, which had not been due to the extraordinary traffic by the defend- ant's alleged nogligenoe. The Judge, after re- viewing tllo evidence, gavo judgment in favour of the plaintiffs for £27 ós 2d and costs, disallow- ing the item of £ 1 53 for alleged damage to railings on the roadside. The Clerk (Mr Janies Amphlet-t) appeared for the plaintiffs, and Mr J. W. Hughes, Conwav, for the defendant. A DISPUTED GROCERY ACCOUNT.—The County Court action adjourned at the Llandudno court last month between Messrs Pryoe Wiliiajns and Co., grocers and provision merchants, Col- wyn Bay and Ivhos-on-Sea, and Mr Frank Booth, veterinary surgieon, Old Colwyn, was resumed at the Comvrvy court on Thursday. The plaintiffs' case was that the defendant owed £ 10, balance of aooount, for goods supplied- The defendant, it was alleged, had about fifteen months ago paid one cheque for £10 at the plaintiffs' shop, the C-eylon Stores, in Abergele- road. which had, in tho ordinary course of busi- ness. been sent down to their other shop, the West End Stores, in Conway-raad. A receipt had boon given the defendant when the cheque was handed over at the Ceylon Stores, and aii. other was sent by mistake from the West End Stores.—For the defence, Mr Booth, who plead- ed his own case, eaid that, though he did not remember the transaction two cheques of S10 each had been paid on the same day—one at the West End St.or, and the other at the Ceylon Stores, and he produced receipts for both pay- ments.—Tlie Judge adjourned the case in order that the bank pass book and potty cash book from the Ceylon Stores could bo produced.— These books were now produced, and after some further evidence had been given hit Honour, in giving judgment for the plaintiffs for the amount claimed, said Mr Booth had no doubt made a mistake. Plaintiffs were allowed oosts on the second day of the hearing only. Robert Roberta occupied tlie chair at the weekly meeting of the above on Tuesday eve- ning, when an illuminating lecture was delivered by Dr. Morris Jones, of Brantwood, on "A Voyage to South America." FIRE-— At about six o'clock on Friday eve- ning, (ire was discovered in a. motor shed be- longing to Mr Watson, of The Gables, Conway- -v Toad. Tho alarm was given, and ten minutes later the Fi;\> Brigade arrived in charge of Capt. Roberts. Afisislanoo was rendered by P.C. BILLIARD HANDICAP. — The Christmas billiard handicap, which has been proceeding at the Constitutional Club for several weeks past, was brought to a dose on Monday evening, when the final was played with the following result:—Mr C. H. Harding (100 behind), 150; Mr T. D. Roberts (50 behind), 115, Mr Harding thus becomes the holder for one year of the "Whitehead ChcHenge Cup." The final in the novice handicap was also played on Monday eve- ning, the final scores being :-Mr R. Foulkes, 100; Mr T. J). Roberts, 91. Addresses were delivered by the Chairman, Mr D- Parry and1 Mr Aldis.^ Other items included: Solo Misa Jones, Railway-terrace; duett, Misses Nancy and Edith Parry, Seven Cottage; duett. Miss Rosy Aldis, and Miss Dav.Vw, Cartref MeJus; recita- tions, Miss Morris, Radway-terrace, a.nd Master Aiken, of Bangor. Mr Bert Allen, of Wolver- hampton, made Iris second appearanco at these entertainments, and delighted the audience with lik piccolo solo and chniery. In a stump speech competition the prize was taken by Mr H. J Jones, booking clerk. Miss Nobie accompanied. At the dose of the meeting a vote of condol- ence was ptrotposed by the secretary (Mr J. O. Williams) with Mr and Mrs II. T. Williams, oi Grove-road, one of the members, on the death of their little child. ESCAPED AND CAPTURED.—Yesterday (Tuesday) evening considerable excitement was caused at the railway station by the escape of a hcifer, which had arrived by train. The beast in some way or other got lose, and was running wildly about the station yard, the gates having, in the nHian. time, been closed, whilst several men were engaged in trying to recapture tho animal. This was at length accomplished without in- jury to anyone. CHRISTMAS ATTRACTIONS AT THE PUBLIC HALL.—Mr Harry Reynolds has ar- ranged a very strong programme for the holi- days, commencing on Boxing Day. There will be a particularly interesting exhibition of II arry Reynolde' Animated Pictures, wh-ch will inciude the new grand spectacular pantomime, "Ali nabt and tho Forty Thieves;" aLso exciting dra- matio pieces, including "A Drama of the Far West," "The Curse of Money," and "Inoon- ftone," and the marvellously realistic and thrill- ing nautical drama, "The man without a coun- try," which was exhibited for two special nights recently, and will be repeated by special request. The battie scene on board the Amrican man-o'- war in this piece is alone worth a visit. The pro- gramme will also include two interesting travel scenes—"A visit to Conway" and "Shanghai." Many screamingly funny comic pictures will also be shown at each performance. In addition to the above, Mr Reynolde has engaged, at con- siderable expense, tlie world-renowned entertain- er, Mr Harry Liston, who, in conjunction with) Misa Lord Lumley, will give different sokctiona from their famous entertainment, "Mea-r^ moments," as given by the before the Royall Family. MR W. CLOUGH, M.T., ADDRESSES LIBERAL WORKERS. A meeting of Lit>cra] workers was held at the Lec- ture liall, S'oa View-tcrraee, Colwyn Bay, on Friday, wheu Mr W Clough, the member for the Skipton Division of Yorkshire, addressed a crowded audience on the subject of the Budget and the House of Lords. The meeting was presided over by Mr John Crompton, of Victoria Park. Ml Clough said he rejoiced that the Lords had forced a dissolution at such all oppcr tune time, and UpOD such an opportune question Were or were not the Lords and Dukes to bear their proper share of taxation? This Budget was the most just and equitable he had ever known. Mr Lloyd George had left untouched the necessaries of life, and bad taxed only the luxuries of existence (cheers), it was a luxury to smoke, and he supposed it was a luxury to drink it was a luxury to drive a motor car it was a luxury to have an unearned income; and it was a big luxury to have an income of over £ 500 a year. For these luxuries they had to pay (cheers) The House of Lords had failed in their duty as a second chamber, and so had no justification for the;¡ existence. existence. It was the duty of a sccond chamber to revise and olieck hasty and ill-considcred legislation.The House of Lords had done neither. They were also to apply the brake on the political coach, a thing they neve; did In the case of a Tory Government, but. when r. Mr Eettlewell moved a vote of thanks to Mf Clough, wliich was seconded by Mr McKie, who referred to the disturbance at the Unionist meatiag.beid on the previous evening,and said that if any of the youn^eT portion of the audience had contributed to the uproar he hoped it wouid not hap pen again. They should allow the other side to have a fair hearing (hear, hear). Mr F. Grubb, Liberal agent, endorsed the remarks made by the last, speaker, and on behalf of Sir Her- bert Roberta, said he would be Lhc last to encouraa'F anything like sustained interruption at a public meet- ing. He was also certain that the responsible leaders* of Liberal opinion in Colwyn Bay would do their ut- most t.o check such practices (hear, hear).

Archdeacon Wynne Jones delivered an address at a service for men held at St.. Michael's Church on Sunday afternoon. The attendance, owing to the very inclement weather, was rather small, but those who braved the blizzard were well repaid for doing so by hearing a very excellent address. LLANFAIRT ALHAIARN. OBITUARY.—The death has taken placa ill Liverpool of Mr David Roberts, the son of the late Rev. Robert Roberts, Tanyfron. The deceased was 77 years of age, and left this district in 1853 for Liverpool lie was in the employ of the Dock Board for over 40 years, and retired upeu a pension ten years ago. He had been a member of the Lodge of Oddfellows for <16 years, and caretaker of the Liscard Road C.M. Chapel for over 48 yea! s.

"LLYSFAEN. LIBERAL MEETINC,To-day (Thursday) week, a Libera) meeting was held at the Welsh Wesleyan Church Schoolroom, when Mr William .Tone?, M.P., an J Sir J. Herbert Roberts, M.P., delivered addresses upon ttu Budget and the present political situation in general. Mr R. Evans, Old Colwyn, presided. PREACHING MEETINGS have been ar- ranged for Christmas Day a,t the C.M. Church, when the Rev. D. Hoskins, Carnarvon', and the Rev. Jonathan Jones, of St. Asaph, will be the officiating ministers. PARISH COUNCIL. A meeting of the Llysfaen Parish Council was held on Monday evening, for the purpose of considering tho advisability of applying for urban powers for the parish. Mr David Evans, Groesffordd, presided. Mr Robert Evans, C.C., Mohrcroft, Colwyn, who was the convenor of the meeting, was unable to be present. Several members of the Council spolte on the subject, but in the absence of any statistics dealing with the matter, it was decided that no decision be arrived a.t, and the meeting was adjourned.

LIBERAL MEETING.-—A Liberal meeting has been arranged at Mr Frost's Cafe on the 4tih January, but the naaies of the speakers who are to take part are not yet known. PERSONAL. The Rev. G. T. Hughee, pastor of the Irving-street Congregational Church, Dumfries, prcached the annual sermon in connection with the Dumfries and Maxcoilstown Auxiliary of the National Bible Society of Scotland at Dumfries on Sunday to large oongrega.ticn3. Mr Hughee was fomwrly pastor of the English Congregational Church at Rhos. SUCCESS.—Amongst the rotunea of the suc- cessful candidates in tlio recent Inuar. BETTWSYCOED. FOOTBALL.—The Swallows entertained Llanrwst Albions on Saturday, an interest- ing game resulting in a draw of two goals each. The Swallows intend to take part in the football competition, at Bethesda, on Monday. TEMPERANCE.—On Sunday evening, at the Brynmawr C.M. Chapel, Mr Wm. Jones, M.P., gave an address on temperance work. MOELWYN CHOIR.—This wen-known choir gave an entertainment at the girls' school, on Thursday evening, Mr Davey in the chair. The programme waa well sus- tained, and was much appreciated by the PERSONAL.—Mr Alun Rawson Williams, son of the Rev. H. Rawson Williams, is in- disposed.-Mr Idwai Parry, son of Mr Robt. Parry, is home for the Christmas vaca- tion.

In his report, the Inspector characterises the work done ItS very good, and the discipline and tone of the school excellent. The following scholars gained certific-ates:- Honours: Sally Davie?, Myfww, Davies, and Willie Roberts. There was a large attendance, and the proceeds were devoted to the new C.M. chapel funds. OBil L ARY.—The d-eath occurred, last week, of Catherine Anne Jones, Bodunig, at the age of 16 years. The deceased was blind from infancy. The funeral took place on Saturday afternoon, at Pandy Tudur C.M. Cemetery.
