Men of all parties are the better by knowing one another. One reason why I admire the Eis.eddfcd platform is that we as a nation meet there as a nation. On this platform there is neither scet nor par- ty, neither bond nor free, but pori-eet equality and unanimity, and no other nation can boast • of anything comparable with it. Having dain each other all the year round, those of us who are alive at the end come here to shake hands (louid laughter). Long may the Eis eddxod hve! (applause). Now, there is no need for ma to introduce Mr Churchill (crks of "Go on.") No, no. I must keep my sermon till Thursday. I hav# been trying' to teach a little Welsh to Mr (Tiurehill (laughter). I don t know how he will come out, but by next y< ar I hope I shall have taught hiin enough to ooiri- P&te at the National Eisteddfod (laughter and oboars). MR CHURCHILL AND WELSH SONG. Mr Winston Churchill, who hkewise had a I lroat ovation, said: My Lord Bishop, ladica and gentlemen,—It is far from my intention to in- flict a speech upon you, and indeed, I do not think I should have been entioed to this de- lightful gathering had I foreseen more accu- rately the dewing stages of the ordeal to which I was to be subjected. I asked my friend, Mr Lloyd George, to say a few words first, b eac>-e I felt that in listening to his remarks 1 should father more' accurately what it would be wise fo say (loud laughter). But lie has eluded me in this respect, and therefore I will offer my most hearty congratulations upon the great and unqualified success of the days proceed- mgs. The festival which is now taking place — to attend which Welshmen have travelled not only from all parts of the Principality, but from all parts of the United Kingdom, and even from distant lands beyond the seas—is only the revival of one of your gTeat and enduring customa, which from the most remote and ro- mantic ages of our history has Been enshrined in the hearts of the people of Wales (loud oheers). WEDNESDAY. PROCEEDINGS AT THE PAVILION. LLANGOLLEN, Wednesday Night. The audience at the Pavilion, this (Wednesday) morning, was very sparse when the proceedings first opened. Some difficulty was experienced in finding anything to do on. the platform, the num- ber of competitors in the preliminary competi- tions being so great that hours were in some cases occupied in the task of weeding oub and select- ing the three or four best to appear on the plat- form. Col. Cornwallis West occupied the chair, but deferred his presidential address until a larger audience assembled. He was supported on the platform by the Hon. Mrs Bulkeley Owen. Mr David Evans gave an excellent rendering of the Eisteddfod Song, and was compelled to give an encore. Gwynedd, who acted as conductor, announced a number of awards in the arts section, and Bethel and Pedrog delivered a couple of im- promptu stanzas to the rain which was now fall- ing in sheets on the corrugated roof. The children's harp competition was one of those delightful little incidents which touch the Eisteddfodic heart. Three youngsters appeared in succession, and played their -little selections of Welsh airs on the small harp to the delight of the somewhat sparse audience. One of the com- petitors, a little girl from Birkenhead, looking exceedingly quaint, dressed in the old-fashioned Welsh costume, quite caught the heart of the audience, who cheered appreciatively when she was awarded a prize. The Hon. Mrs Bulkeley Owen drove home tde lesson of the incident by remarking that harp- playing was almost a lost art in North Wales. She did not want it taken up as a profession to make a living. Those days had gone, and the old race of harpists were dead and gone, and it was sad to think that many of them had died in want. Pepys, writing in his diary in 1666, said: "Evans, the Welsh harper, having hot his equal in the world, did the other day die for mere want." She knew lady and gentlemen harpers who were also in want. As Lady St. David's had said: There could not be too many lovers of music, but to live by music was only possible for the very few." She wound up by reciting in Welsh:- Hen delyn Gwlad y Bryniau! deffro'r gan Fu'n ysbrydoli'th dannau euraidd gynt, Gan droi calonau dewrion Gwalia'n dan Pan seiniai udgorn rhyfel yn y gwynt. O! deffro eto'r hen wladgarol dant Nes deffro ysbryd arwyr yn eu plant. The contralto solo competitions proved to be an unusually excellent one, 48 competitors having entered, and Mr J. 0. Rees, in making the award, said he would have gladly given the prize to at least a dozen of them. The one to whom the prize was actually awarded, however, was far superior to her com- petitors, and he hoped she would now quit the competitive platform. The winner, Miss Win- fred Lewis, Senghenydd, South Wales, was loud- ly applauded. In the adjudication on the piano and string quartette, prize £ 10, the adjudicators said that three of the four compositions sent in were out ef the competition, but the fourth was undoubted- ly one of the best musical compoeitions ever sent Tnto a National Eisteddfod. The winner proved to be a foreigner, Herr Heinrich Schalet, Munich, who was represented by his brother. Col. Cornwallis West-, in his presidential ad- S8, said the Eisteddfod dated back to at least the 4th century. A still greater antiquity was claimed fot the Welsh language. A Breton pro- fessor had assured him that Welsh was spoken I by the ancient gods, Jupiter and Saturn— (laughter) -while a British professor held it was the laii-ua,e of Adam and Eye. In any case "v the nat!'e tongue was deeply buried in the heart of the Welsh people. The Eisteddfod deserved all their support for its influence for good on the Welsh people. He would wish, however, to re- mind them that it was their duty to set aside their feelings of sentiment, and realise that Eng- lish was after all the official language of the British Isles, and spoken by more people in the civilised world than any other tongue. It was thus the duty of every citizen to see that the children should be taught English as otherwise they would be handicapped all their lives. He solicited their assistance in completing the pro- posed Memorial Hall to Ceiriog, the Burns of Wales. He concluded by expressing a hope that some scheme might be devised whereby the Uni- versity of Wales and the Intermediate Schools could co-operate to ensure the encouragement of promising talent among school children. There was always the possibility that in their schools might be a Gibson or a Burne Jones only waiting encouragement to be developed into a genius. CROWNING THE SUCCESSFUL BARD. At noon was witnessed the picturesque cere- monial of crowding the author of the best poem oh Owen ClyrijjJ.wr,the prize being £ 20 and a silver crownf* At this time the pavilion was scarcely more than half full. The trumpets were sounded, and the Druids, bards and ovates robed in white, blue and green respectively, ascended the platform, where, with Dyfed, the Archdruid, in the centre, they formed in semi- circle. The adjudicators were Iolo Caernarfon, Gwynedd and Elfed, and in the absence of the first-named the award was read by Gwynedd. Seven poems, it transpired, had been received, and of these two were superior. These were those signed by "Gwerinwr" and "Aelwyn." Both, while differing in characteristics, were somewhat equal in merit, but Aelwyn presented a clearer and more vivd picture of Glyndwr, and some portions of the poem are likely to live long in popular memory. It was the unanimous decision of the adjudicators that the crown be awarded to "Aelwyn." The Archdruid, who was supported by Eifionydd, Pedr Hir, Pedrog, Bethel, Machreth, Brynfab, Gwili, Madryn, and other gorsedd leaders then challenged Aelwyn to reveal himself. In response a young man dressed in ministerial garb stood up in the body of the hall. The audience cheered enthusiastically, and the band played "See the conquering hero comes." He was escorted by Pedr Hir and Gwynedd to the platform, where he was crowned with all the customary pomp and ceremonial. The successful bard was announced as the Rev. Hugh Emyr Davies, of Gcllidara, Pwllheli, a Calvinistio Methodist preacher. This is the second time for Emyr thus to distinguish him- self, for at the Carnarvon National Eisteddfod of 1906 he was similarly crowned for his poem on" Branwen, Ferch Llyr." At the close of the crowning ceremony Emyr was congratulated in appropriate englynion by his fellow bards. Miss Gwladys Roberts, of Llanelly, sang the Song of the Crowning in a very fine effort, for which she was recalled. The ceremonial closed with the rendering by the audience of Hen wlad fy nhadau." BOYS' CHOIRS. Very disappointing waa the class for boys' choirs. Usually the competition for juvenile choristers is one of the best items in the day's programme, but on this occasion there were only three entrants, all from North Wales, and two of these withdrew. The Llangollen Boys' Choir, conducted by Mr D. Rhys Thomas, was the only competitor, and they were adjudged worthy of the prize. AFTERNOON PRESIDENT'S ADDRESS. Sir J. Herbert Roberts, M.P., was the after- noon president. In the course of his address he spoke eulogistically of the splendid effort made by the town of Llangollen to give the Eisteddfod a reception worthy of its proud tradition (hear, hear). The Eisteddfod was not only a fact in the 20th century, it was a great factor in the life of the people of Wales. It followed that it was an organisation which was capable of in- finite growth in power and in blessing for the people (applause). He did not think their duty was fulfilled by their coming to the annual gathering once a year. It meant a sense of constant responsibility and obligation to work. The real valuable part of all that day's proceed- ings waa not what they were experiencing there that day, but all the good work, the patient toil, the days and nights that had been spent during the past year in preparing for those fruits which they heard and saw that day (applause). He was proud of the past achievement of the Welsh National Eisteddfod, but mere sentiment, mere admiration for the past would never bring the life of Wales to the gateway of her goal, which was that they should realise their responsibility to works, and make the Eisteddfod in the future a still more beneficent instrument for the up- lifting of the life of the people (cheers). He hoped that this great national organisation might in the future not only be a force, an inspiring effort in the sphere of music, of art, and of litera- ture, but become a machinery for directing wise- ly and well that effort into channels which would produce the best and most permanent results (cheers). THE SECOND CHORAL COMPETITION. The second choral competition was reached at three o'clock, and at this time an audience of some seven or eight thousand people had assembled. This contest was for choirs of from 65 to 80 voices. The prize was JE50, and there were two test pieces, (a) "Y lefndeg afon lithra'n mlaen" (J. Price, Beulah) and "Cydgan yr An- gylion" (Miss A. J. Williams, Eurgain). Thirteen choirs had originally entered, but seven of these, it transpired, had withdrawn, viz., Penygraig Philharmonic Society, "Ystwythians," Talke and District, itlaenau Festiniog Philharmonic, Llanrwst Choral Union, United Lancastrian, and Brymbo and Broughton Excelsiors. The re- maining six choirs sang in the following order: Cor Undebol Dyffryn NantHe (Mr T. Powell), Cor Cymry Gwrecsam (Mr E. Rogers), The Mielor Choir (Mr John Wright), Holyhead Choral Union (Mr Hugh Williams), Coleford Philharmonic Society (Mr J. H. Evans), Tre- cynon United Choir (Mr W. Gwynne). The ad- judicators were Messrs S. Coleridge Taylor, D. Emlyn Evans, D. Jenkins, J. T. Rees, and Harry Evans. Mr J. T. Rees delivered the award in Welsh. It had been an interesting contest, he said, though not by any means the beat heard. Two of the choirs had excelled the others, and the prize had been won (cheers). He was pleased to learn that Miss A. J. Williams, the composer of one of the test pieces had heard the beautiful performance given of her "Angel's Chorus." Proceeding to detailed criticism the speaker said the Nantlle Choir had given an excellent rendering of both pieces. The recit. in the "Angels' Chorus" was better rendered by the tenor soloist of the Trecynon Choir than by any of the others. Trecynon had very excellent voices, but the intonation was defective. Cole- ford had pure intonation, but sopranos were too conspicious and cold. The first prize was awarded to NantHe Vale Choir, Holyhead being adjudged second.

LAST NIGHT'S CONCERT. TWO NEW CANTATAS. Wednesday night's concert was also unusually interesting, inasmuch as two new works were introduced to tho public. The first was a dramatic cantata by Mr David Jenkins, entitled "Llyn y Moorwynion" ("The Maidens' Lake"): and the second a romantic cantata from the pen of Mr Harry Evans, entitled "Dafydd ap Gwilym." The composers conducted their own works, which were favourably and enthusiasti- cally received.

TO-DAYS PROCEEDINGS. Sir Watkin Williams Wynn presided over this morning's meeting, and this afternoon the Chancellor of the Exchequer will be present.

THE 1858 EISTEDDFOD A perusal of the report of the last Llangollen National Eisteddfod or the "Crand National Eisteddfod," as it is termed, contained in the "North Wales Chronicle" for September 25th, 1858, reveals tho many striking changes which have taken place in the festival during half a century. In contradistinction to the present day Eisteddfodau, literature was then para mount, and music held a comparatively insigni- ficant position in the programme. The amount of prizes competed for amounted to £ 500, and tho Eisteddfod was held in a pavilion on the banks of the River Dee, capable of holding from six to seven thousand people. Of the Gorsedd the following is w.-it eil:- "Some of the bards were in full costuni?, as Dr. Price, South Wales, who wears a true patria-rchial beard—attired in a green jacKet suit, trimmed with scarlet ana a, primitive fox skin cap. Miss Price, daughter of Dr. Price (who is known throughout Wales as the "Countess oi Glamorgan "J was mounted upon a charger, wearing a fox skin head-dress and a scarlet riding habit. Some of the prizes given then will bca.r com- parison with prizes offered nowadays. At one of the mietings a remarkable scene of uproar 'surpassing those which usually take place at general elections" occurred, Th; troublel aroS) over the adjudication of an essay on the advantages accruing to Englishmen from a knowledge of the Welsh language, and whilst Mr G?corge Ifamiiy)nd Whallev, of Pla.,?rnadoe.. After loud cries of "Platform," he came forward, and said that if political and religious matters were to bo discussed there he was suro it would be the last meeting of the kind that would ever take place (loud cheers and cries of "Tottenham for evar" by the English, and "Whalley for ever" by the Welsh). When Mr Whalley was again beginning to speak, Mr Evans, of Trevor Hall, Ruabon. oame forward to second Col. Tottenham, but the audience cried out loudly and frequently "Turn him out," "Send him down," *tc. A gold torque of valour valued at 30 guineas was awarded to Major Shields for bravery at Redan, wherp he fought with the 23rd Royal Welsh Fusiliers. The reoeipts at the door on the first day amounted to £200,- and they were proportio- nately large on the following days. Last Tuesday, it might be mentioned, the re- ceipts were £ 580.

VALE OF CONWAY HORTICULTURAL SOCIETY. ANOTHER SUCCESSFUL SHOW AT LLANBEDR A BOISTEROUS DAY. The eleventh annual show in connection with the above Society was held in a field noear Llan- bedr, Tal-y-Cafn, on Saturday. The weather was go boisterous that it was necessary to pull down ilhe roof of the marquee, leaving the sides only standing. Naturally, the exposure resul- ted in damage to 8Ü' of the exhibits. About 4 o'clock a fieavy shower of rain drove a large number of the spectators to seek shelter under the exhibit stands, otherwise the day was fine and bracing. The number of exhibits showed an increase on the previous year, the quality being also well maintained. The judges spoke highly of the sheep classes, while some of the poultry were of excellent quality. The leghorn owned by Mr J. O. Jones, of Llanrwst, which won the championship prize, waa a rcry fine bred bird. In the pigeon class the male turbits shown by Mr E. Thomas, of Llanrwst, was an- other exceptionally fine specimen, but the hen was not up to show form, and this fact pro- bably robbed the exhibitor of premier honours. The vegetables werci of a high standard of ex- cellence. It is a matter for congratulation that the farmers and cottagers of the Vale of Con- way are taking advantage of their favourable surroundings to adapt themselves to gardening —for market gardening when properly carried out is a source of considerable profit to both the farmer and the cottager when situated so favourably in point of markets. The secretary, Mr Isaac Jones, Tuhwnti'r- gors, went to considerable pains to ensure the success of the show, which, judging by the large number of spectators who patronised the event, must have resulted in a considerable financial gain to the Society. At Dowlais Steelworks on Tuesday a long gas tube fell at the blast furnaces, killing one man and injuring two others. The death from appendicitis is announced of Mr F. L. Lambert, of the solicitor's depart- ment oi the London and North Western Rail- way Company. A conductor of a Scarborough tramway-oar, who found a purse in the car containing £ 8 17s was offered ft reward of twopence, which he declined.
