COLWYN BAY ! PIER ENTERTAINMENTS.…
COLWYN BAY PIER ENTERTAINMENTS. A WEEK OF ATTRACTIONS. Th i, lias been one of the most succcssful weeks of the season at the Colwyn Bay Pier PavcJion. The ordinary concerts, have been well attended, and tliore have been at lc> two special enter- tainments of the very beet order in theix re- spective elates M'.fs Annie Nelson concludcit her week's en- ga^'oi.rient on Friday evevmng, when eliie gave, amongst other numbers, "The Jewel Song" from "Faust," one of her favourite selections. On the same occasion. Mr Arthur Hytch performed a very aooentable vioJn solo, a.nd Mr Joseph Lindsay again roused a hearty cheer for an ex- cellent euohoniuin selection. On Saturday eveniiig Mr Char lee Tree was the vccal'.sit, a.nd a.s. usual the acconipliwhed baritone proved exceedingly popular. Another feature 'of thi.-v oonocrt was a concerto for violins n'ayed with marked success by Messrs E. J. Ro- "bertp and Horace Teague. Atmongst the band's numbers wore selections from "Tannhauser" and "La. BoIiëme." With the "In MemoKam" over- tuiro, all three being very well played. O.n Mon- day evening Mwrs E. J. Robert^, and J. Soutlh- worth alave the "Wee Grandmother" duett for yioMns. wlhioh was wetll received. Of the or- chestral selections. King's fantasia, "A Shep- berti's life on thi- Alps," proved the most popu- lar. Mr Ti-ee -ng "Non P!u Andral" from Mozart's Lc Nozze di P'igaro" with great effect. Last (Wednesday) evening the pro- gramime was of a humorous character. A xylo- phone solo bv Herr Geaink was a feature. ROYAL WELSH LADIES' mIOIR. Tbei-e> are a pavUion'audience dis- played as much enthusiasm as on F it day after noon, when the Royal Welsh Ladies' Choir, un- der Madame Hughes Thomas, gave a matinee, and this, notwithstanding regular visits by famous organisation;?* of Welsh lady vocalists every sea- eon. Madame llughes-Thomas, who in passing is the wife of an ex-Mayor of Cardiff, and her party will shortly be leaving for a tour in Acnorica, and she has certainly been ,singularly fortunaf-o in the selection of her choir. Thougn smaJler in ,number than other well known choirn of Welsh ladies, she has raided round her tio compact, efficient and conscientious a band as cV<T faced an audience. Their chorus singing on Friday was practically perfect; in tone, tiime, colouring, blend and general effect .nothing was left to be desired. The large- audience ,vere obviously charmed with their wo'rk, for the en- eores were end'ess, and the chee^ng, as al- rea-dv indicak»4. such as has not-been heard in the great paviho.n for many day: Anart from the choral selections, however, the programme, contained a nuimber of individual items of outstanding merit, Included amongst the soorant^ was no less an artiisto than Madame S. J. Thomas, of Llanelly, who may well be titled the. Wesli nrima donna. iNla4laiiiie Thomas has for- niaiiv vears thrilled andiiances all over the kingdom, but she. has never sung' more de- lightfully than on Friday, and at no time throughout an exceptionaUy e.nt.hiifVastic concert was the enthusiasm so great. as when she ended her brilEra,nt rendering of Bishop's "Lo, hear the gent'lo lark. She responded to a rousing en- coco with "The Cuckoo," which she sang with suoh rtlre. effect that the audience very unfairly infl|sted upon yet a third song in suecesision. Thii) she gave iji "Gwlad y Gan." Possibly the eaives of applause which ntarlced the close of Mada.me Thomas-' effort recompensed her for the demands mcule upon her. Another exception a:! ly clever artiste was Miss Marianne Squire, a very powerful, melodious, and well gifted soprano, who has won chief hon- ours at the Nat onal Eisteddfod oil more than one occasion. The sang' "Msereri." from "Ji Trovatore," in company with Miss Nancy Lang- don. with uncommon effect, whilst tiie contralto solo numbers of Miss La.ngdon were by no means the least meritorious 'in a high-cla-.s I/;st Mffl Nolcini. Mtss Marion Lewis, A. Jones', Mss Mario Stephens and Miss Ethel Jakemp.n were also included in the choir. Tt heeds scarcely bo said that the conducting of Madame Hughes-Thomas was blameless. MARIE HALL'S VISIT. Mifis Mai-:o Hall, paid her third visit to the Pnvdion on Monday afternoon, when a fashion- ahlv-att-rod audience attended her matinee. Tho renowned volinist was as«»'site<l by Mifs P.a-sohe. a remairkably devr pianist, and Mr C. Stuart Edwards, a gifted bar'itone. Mfss IT •ii! numbers were Goldmar's Concerto in A minor. BacJi's Aria o.n the G string, F eco's ATTefrro, Paganini's Andante and Allegro Vivo, with Schubcrt'» Rondo BriKante <n o:».tion with M'as Basche. As hitherto, Misa Hall ca-DtTvated her aud'once with her bril.tant exooutiOT4 and it was at onoe seen that neither her power nor her disposition has been affected by the plaudits of her tliousa.nqs of admirers* She came o<n the stage with the same modesty and wan, withal pleasant, I-ttle smile, which marked her memorable debut at Coilwyn Bay three years ago,and her piaymg—particularly in point of tone —was characterised with that mellowness which only comes with experience and all the old bril- liance of technique. A wire snapped in tliet p ano while the duo was in progress, but though. Mits Basohe was naturally annoyed over the accident the two artistes got througli their worfij with distinct success. Miss Basche is one oi tll. most skilful Jady pianists ever heard in the Pavilion. Her interpretaUon of Chopin's ture in D flat, Two Studies and Study in A minor WQ6 excellent. In the Nocturne she dia- played rare restraint and distinct artistic feel. ing, while her touch was ait all times deli litful, '113 -9 Mr Edw&rde' songs included Ha,ndel "Wher. ere You Walk," which he sang with creditable tvurn THE FOLLIES. The well-known company of enierta'iera^ "The Foliiea," viaited the Pavilion on Tuesday; afternoon, and were patroffised by a. very largo crowd. The company, which ia headed by Mr: II.-G. Peliijisier, lb undoubtedly the finest of ita kind in the country, and gives a programme which i)leases even the most fastidious. Tue»% day's progra.mme included single turns, duets, (musical a.nd comedy sketches, etc.
BARBED-IRON AND THISTLES.…
BARBED-IRON AND THISTLES. (To tho Editor of the "Pioneer.") Sir,— Before writing to the London Press on the neglect or callousness of local authorities of certain popular watering places and residential resorts of North Wales, I wish you would allow me to condemn in the strongest terms the usei of barbed wire fencing alongside public and occupation roads, field footpaths, etc. People coino from the English towns in pursuit of en- joyment and health, but parents are kept in a,- constant state of anxiety for fear their children should bo in j u. rod by barbed wire fences "miles upon miles" of which are allowed by the publio authority to remain by the roadside, with their mjllions of rusty barbed spikes, each spiko be. ing liable to cause injury, laceration of the flesh, poisoning of the blood, and often 10. suiting in dùath! It is not only prejudicial to the towns and districts whore allowed to be placed, bur .-uch foiKang is illegal, and inhuman; a menace to man and beast. It is first referred to in the Biblo by Job in xli., verso 7, wnere the parient prophet a ska, "Canst thou fill his skin with barbed irons or his head with fish spears?" There is another "cursed pest allowed to exist;" and ftcuariah in out midst; along the road- side, in fields, gardens, rubbish heaps, mnni* cipa.1 middens, and on waste uncultivated lands. That M, the. common thistle. As early in the Book of Genesis as Chapter iii., verses 17 and 18, we read that the Great Architect of the. Universe is reported to have used these hard words to Adam, after the fall: "Cursed is the. ground for thy sake; in, sorrow shalt thou eat; of it all the days of thy life; thorns also and thistles shall it bring forth to thee." There are some people &iMo seem bent on fanning and spreading this curse of the agriculturist and the gardener, by allowing thistles to grow and ripen ariywiicro and everywhere, uncut and un checked, until tho thistle "seeds," and this seed on its downy-wings i wafted in the breeze by thousands of millions to sow itself wherever "WQ plough tho fields and scatter the good seed o'er the land," and then up comes tho thistle. "The Yorkshire Post," which is the leadings journal of England's largest county and greats est agricultural district, is giving expression to the opinion that tho rampant growth of the thistle ninst 00 dealt with. In tho Isle of Man there is a "Weetls Act," compelling, uneIer a. penalty not exooeding ten pounds, any farmer who does not out down by August 1st any thistles, common docks and cuskage, nettles. etc. English and Welsh farmors are sadly to blame- because thero are so many thistles, docks, anct nettles about. They should be truly, ELLIS LEVER. Colwyn Bay, Aagust 12th, 1908.
