VALE OF CLWYD SHOW.
VALE OF CLWYD SHOW. ANOTHER HIGHLY SUCCESSFUL EXHIBITION AT DENBIGH. LAST YEAR'S STANDARD FULLY MAIN- TAINED. COMPLETE LIST OF AWARDS. It was generally admitted that last year's how, under the auspices of the Vale of Clwyd Agri- cultural Society, was phenomenally successful in more than one respect, and few if any anticipated that this year's exhibition, which was held at Denbigh, on Thursday, would reach the same high level. Nevertheless such was the fact for, while the entries were only 30 less than last year, all in a position to judge fairly, were un- animously of opinion that in point of quality a very distinct improvement marked most of if not all the exhibits this year. This was parti- cularly gratifying, for after all the numerical strength of the entries is of less importance than their quality, and having regard for the high level attained twelve months ago it must have given- the committee no little pleasure to observe that in this important direction the show still tends upward. GENERAL BADEN-POWELL WELCOMED. As hitherto the exhibition was attended by a large number of the leading residents in the three counties. Chief amongst the visitors was Major-General Baden-Powell, the hero of Mafe- king, who is the guest of the Hon. Laurence A. Brodrick, at Coed Coch, Colwyn Bay. "B.-P." was naturally a figure full of interest to the hundreds present, who had not seen him before. At the show luncheon he occupied the seat of honour beside Colonel Howard, C.B., the popular and active president of the show. There were also present: Mr Sidney Muspratt (High Sheriff of Flintshire), Mr P. P. Pennant, Major Salusburv, Mr Douglas Mac. Nicoll, Mr Aneurin O. Evans (chairman of the Denbighshire County Council). Mr Guy Conran (county trea- surer), Mr J. Parry Jones (town clerk of Den- igh), and others. Thanks to the propitious weather a large num- ber of fashionably dressed ladies were also in attendance, and the beautifully-situated Howells' Park, where the proceeding were held. presented a picturesque and animated appearance. PRIZE LIST CHANGES. Certain unimportant changes had been made in connection with the prize list, but one of them —that of charging entrance fees in the children's competitions-apparently accounted to some ex- tent for the reduced number of entries. Three classt's for cage birds had been abandoned. In the principal agricultural sections, however, things were as hitherto except that the competi- tions, particularly in the heavy and light horse events, were keener than ever. A large increase in the entries in the dog classes indicated the increasing popularity of that side of the show, but the horticultural section was somewhat disappointingly patronised. THE OFFICIALS. The following were the officiab: Colonel Howard, C.B., president; Alderman Boaz Jones iMayor of Denbigh), and Mr Enos Jones, Nant- gwilym, St. Asaph, vice-presidents; chairman of committee, Major Salusbury, Bachygraig; deputy chairman, Mr W. - ----------DEEPENING THE…
DEEPENING THE DEE. IMPORTANT NAVIGATION SCHEME. The Dee Navigation Conference met at Ches- ter on Friday, and considered proposals to ap- ply to Parliament during the next session for powers (among others) to raise money for deep- ening the river Doe. Mr P. P. 1ennant (St. Asaph) presided. The Executive Committee reported that they considered it was not advis- able to wait for the report of the Royal Com- mission on Canals and Waterways, as there seemed no reasonable probability of the report being of material assistance. The following had signified their willingness to provide cer- tain sums: Messrs John Summers and Sons, Limited, one-fifth, not exoeeding :ciooo; Mr Alfred Mond, M.P., one-fifth, not exceeding £ 1000; Mr H. F. Brown, one-twentieth, not ex- ceeding £ 250;, towards the expenses of an ap- plication to Parliament by the Dee Conservancy Board to amend the Dee conservancy Act, 1889. The Committee recommended tiho Con- ference to urge the Dee Conservancy Board to proceed with the promotion of a bill for the following purposes so soon as they should con- sider that a sufficient guarantee fund had been formed: — (1) To extend the borrowing powers of that Board to 1;400,000, or such larger sum as they might be advised would bo necussary to secure a depth of 20 feet of water up to Chester; but the recommendation of the committee would be not to raise the whole B400,000 at once, but to proceed piecemeal, and allow the beneficial re- suit of the money expended in the first instance (which would not exceed L50,000 to £ 70,000) to be felt. (2) Iro revise the ratee of ship dues on an equitable basis foir all parties concerned. (3) To provide that on the request of the Dee Conservancy Board the Denbighshire County Council, the Flintshire County Council, and the Chester Corporation shall levy such an annual raw on the areas under their control, not ex- ceeding under any circumstances one penny in the pound, as shall be sufficient to meet the de- ficiency of interest hereinafter mentioned (on the present rateable values a penny rate would bring in about 25600); the proceeds of the before-niiantionod rate to be handed to the Dee Conservancy Board and to be used by them to pay any deficiency in interest on the money for the time being borrowed, which the ordinary revenue of the Board (after payment of main- tenance and otlter iiMial and proper charges and expends) is unable to meet. (4) To give the Denbighshire and Flintshire County Councils better representation on the Dee Conservancy Board. Suoh bill to contain such other provisions as may be considered necessary and advisable. The Committee added that the members of the Conference should individually pledge them- selves to do their utmost to obtain the acquies- cence, support, and approval of their various bodice to the scheme. The report was adopted, and a small com- mittee was appointed to confor with and assist the Deo Conservancy Board in the drafting and settling of the terms and provisions of the amending bill. DETAILS OF THE SCHEME. It is understood that, as the result of tho re- commendations made at the conference at Ches- ter on Friday, the Dee Joint Navigation Com- mittee intend to make a.n eff-ort towards carry- ing out the scheme for the improvement of the navigation of the river prepared some time ago by a well-known firm of Edinburgh engineers, and which provides for a total expenditure of about E400,000, spread over a number cf years. The scheme providcu for securing a 20 foet channel right up the river to Saltney and Ches- ter. At present the greatest impediment to the doepening pf the channel is the "Rock Bar" at Conna-h's Quay, which has only about three feet of water over it at low water, and W' 1( which holds back the river above it. The scheme provides for the remeval of the bar and the extension of the existing training walls. The channel from Chester to Connah's Quay would be dredged to the necessary depth. Lower down t.hc river the llagllt Bank would be cut through in order to get a direct course to Mostyn. Leeo (one of the first anchorages on the coa-st), and prevent the river straying in the di- rection of Dawpool. Efficient lighting and buoy- ing are also included in the scheme. It is believed that the carrying' out of the scheme would lead to a great increase in the trade of the ri:vcr, and devel-cup industries right along the :1¡;J{hcr baink from Mostyn to Chester.
SUMMER SKIN TROUBLES,
SUMMER SKIN TROUBLES, You may go where you like for your holidays at this time of the year, but you will too often find that the change of air and the different waters you have to drink or wash in will exer- cise an unpleasant influence on your skin, caus- ing unsightly rashes and eruptions to appear.. Some skins are more sensitive than others, and certain waters will at once produce a rough and unoleasant feeling' on the face and hands. If, however, Zam-Buk Medicinal and Toilet Soap is used, or the skin anointed with the famous Zam- Buk balm, it will always feel soft and velvety, even after washing in the hardest of waters. The reason for this is that Zam-Buk is prepared from pure herbal essences for which the skin has a natural affinity. Zam-Buk is the skin's greatest protector whenever its health is threatened.
