NEW KBCTOB d? LLAN- DBG LA. | PREPEJRMENT OF THE REV. J. H. l-Jc, COl.VVyN BA Y. WELL-i^&aK^VKD ADVANCEMENT. As briefly announced in our later editions last week, the Her. J. H. flope, M.A,, itenior curate oi St. Cimreto, Colwyn Bay, hae been preferred to the rectorship of xaandegia a parjsn 8>ituate between rtutbm and Wrexham. The liviug is in the giit af the iisshop ct St. and is 01 ibe annual value of £240 net, together with the Rectory. '.I'll is is another instance of Bishop Ed- wards' discriminating power and serine of justice, for never has promotion been bet- ter won. Mr Hope's departure will prove a very decided to Colwyn 13av from more than the Churchman's point of view, for, apart from being a conscientious, practical, and highly industrious priest, he has been rendered invaluable servaccs on education and other public bodies in the town, while to the poor of all creeds he has proved a real friend in need. It would be dirneult to estimate the value of his church work in the parish, because his untiring industry has been manifested in so many and such varied directions. In the pulpit he is a distinctly strong nian,-bi-tyad in mind, courageous to a degree, convincing in manner, and lucid and thoroughly straightforward in expres- sion. Out of the. poipit he is perhaps a still greater force. He has been in Colwyn Bay for over eight years, hut during that time he has been very largely responsible for the liquidation of a debt of about £ 3,500 on the beautiful piece of ground in front of St. Paul's Church, while he and Lie wife wiped off another debt of 1;360 remaining lill the purchase of land on wJiich the mission church stands, besides collaborating with Mrs Brock, Mrs Crump, Mr W. Jones (N.P. Bank), and Mr W. Bernard Lucas in organi- ging a series of highly successful sales and bazaars, which have culminated in freeing the Church Room from debt. He ha." oc- REV. J. H. HOPE, M A. eupied the position of senior ciirst-e for some ttime, and in that capacity he has bad charge of the Mission Church, which has dur- ing his time been entirely self-supporting. i»g- A keen and accomplished musician, Mr Hope has devoted himself wholeheartedly to Hope has devoted himself wholeheartedly to the improvement of the musical part of the services at St. Paul's and the Mission Church. Thanks to his training, the choir at St. Paul's may well claim a very promi- nent place amongst Church choirs in North Wales. Though the choristers number only thirty youths, ranging from seven to four- teen years of age, their work is excellent. The choir have very successfully performed at various times such compositions as The Messiah. Holy City" (Gaul), and \;inning's "Passion Music," while they are now rchears- ing Staiiier s Crucifixion" for represen- tation on Good Friday. Not only has Mr Horn* been eminently successful as conductor, but he has proved himself a talented oi- ganiist, and the recitaLs given by him Uino after time have been exceedingly popular. Moreover, he is a preficient voealirit- As a member of the St. Asaph Diocesan Mimical Festival Committee, his serYieco have been very valuable. Mr Hope is an Englishman by name, hut a thorough-going Welshman in speech, and1 everything else. He is a native of Carnar- von, and for some years was engaged in the hchola^tie profession. As a lad he was a member of the choir at St Mary's Church I in that town, and it was in that capacity that he first became at^ooiated with Canon Roberts who was then a curate at Carnar- von So hn ago as 1882 he was presented with a testimonial bv the worshippers at St Mary's on his resignation of the kader- ship of the choir, which position he had at- tained in the course of time. Up fo his ordination in 1899 by the Bishop of Bangor (by letter s dimissory from the Bishop of St-. Asaph), he was headmaster of the Church schools at Holywell, acting at the same time M organist and conductor at the Pariish Church. On the occasion of his marriage he was presented with a marble timepiece by tho members of the choir, and when he sub- frequently left the town to talic up his duties at Colwyn Hay, he received a pur&¡ of gold and an illuminated address from tho pari- shioners and another present from his Masonic friend?. Mr Hope will probably take up his duties at Llandegla early in May.

Uamiin, Rhyl, pr»s«cutea on beiialf Q1 the Company. The r-ane agamst the defendant was that he was Tva/teuect at Abergeje oy 'j\cKct in- spectors W wan and bomerton, and seen on the station eleven minutes before the tram started. Iletondant- was. seen to enter the 5 &5 train for Rhyl at Abergele. He alighted at ithyl. and remained on tne platform until tbo 4 7 for Chester was leaving, and he tra- velled by it. At Chester he was accosted by an inspector who had travelled with him from Abergele, and he then produced a tounst tic- ket Xrom Denbigh to Shrewsbury, which covered his journey from Rhyl to Chester. When asked for the ticket. from Abergele to Rhwl he said he bad not time to book. Defendant was lined £ 1 and £ 2 Is 6d costs. Frederick Gollifer, a commercial traveller, of Weisbpooi, was also eburged with travel- ling from Llanddular; to blitit on February 17th, without paying Iiis fare, and with in- tent to defraud the company, Mr F. J. Cam- tin prosecuted, and Mr Orifttth JÆW de- fended. It appeared from Mr Gamlin's statement and the evidence given by Kxaminers Swan and Somertou that the defendant obtained at Cliester on February 11 from an exa- miner on the platform, an excess fare re- ceipt made cut in the form of a tourist ticket from Chester to Holyhead. This wouki give him the right to breTik bis jour- ney at any fetation on the route. On that day he travelled as far as Llandudno Junc- tion. and later on returned to Chester. On February 17 ho was seeit in a Chester train at Hhyl; and was watched until he alighted at Llanddulas, whero he exhibited to the fctationmastcr on leaving the station the excess faro receipt issued to liim on the Ilth, which ho therefore, had used twice over. When questioned at Bangor the next day by Examiner Swan he admitted that a09 between Flint and Llanddulas he had travelled with this ticket twice, but he stated that he bad booked to Flint, whero he had thought at first of getting out. Tho ticket to Flint he had destroyed as useless. On defendant's behalf Mr Lewis urged that he had been in the service of one firm for 28 yearn, and was held in the highest respect. He had been travelling for many years, and had never been suspected of anything wrong, and he urged the bench to accept tho explanation which defendant had to give, and to give him the benefit of the doubt in the matter of the intention to defraud. Defendant stated that when he booked to Flint he intended to call on a customer. On the way to the train he met another tra- veller, a Mr Roberta, of nhyJ, who told him he had an appointment with thoxanie man at Flint. Knowing it was useless for him to then go to Flint, defendant re- mained in the train, and showed the tourist ticket at Llanddulas without thinking. When he was questioned by the inspector later en it dawned on him all at once that he had made a mistake, and he at once explained and offered tho fare. Afcked by his solicitor whether he had fol- 11 lowed some advice given him in a letter hy a gentleman who was now a director of the firm he worked for when he was start- ing on the road, defendant said he had. Ho neither (hank nor smoked- Mr CJamlin (cross examining): I put it to you that the reason you bought a ticket for Flint was because you knew yon would not have been allowed to leave Chester by that train without one, and that Flint. was the nearest place you could book to ;-OJ!, no; that is not so. Mr Camlin further questioned the defen- dant as to whether lie had Mr Roberts .a court to bear out his statement. He replied that he was not there, and that he had missed him on the platform at Rhvl. „ The Chairman intimated that Mr Gamlm need not eross-c-xamine any further. A line of aud costs, including advocate s fee and witness's- expenses, was imposed. THE BEE HOTEL -^TIONS. Mr Morgan applied lor the justices permission to the carrying out oi altera- tions of tho Bee Hotel premises. He ex- plained that. the JlOtel had at present only one out ranee, and that visitors and ordi- nary customers could not he kept a?>art. \plw1:.dI;y on fair days, when the house was very busy. The hotel had twenty bedrooms, and it was proposed to eater for the visit- ing public and motor-car parties. A new door w as proposed to be opened at the end of t-he building leading iJlt-o the lunch-bar, and tlienco int/5 the smoke-room and the billiard-room, which would be better lighted Replying to quest ions. Inspector T Hp- pott said the police had duly received notice of the alterations, and they con- sidered that tLcy would be an improve- ment. The application was then granted. A WARNING. Charles Davies and Joseph ])avkvs, two young Abergele men, were charged with trespassing in pursuit of conic* at Foxhall Farm on Sunday, March 1st. Edward Roberts, gamekeeper, said he saw tho defendants with a d jg. They raised a rabbit, which ran on tho land, aud they went after it. He followed and caught one defendant, and afterwards pursued the other on his bicycle. The Chairman warned both defendants, and said that if they pfamied such a course in the future they would inevitably bring ■trouble on themselves. They were each lined 2s 6d and 7s Od costs. BAD ROADS NO EXCUSE. Frank Jones, Jenkin Street, Abergele, was lined 2is öd and eofits for riding a bicycle on the footpath between Lfanddn-' las and Abergele. The defendant's pica was that the road was in a dirty state, and that there were a number of carriages about. NO LIGHT ON A CART. For liding on a cart after dark without having a light Edward Ilui-ii,, of RhJI, was fined os and <3t> 6d costs. It was stated lhafc tho defendant- had been previously convicted for a like offence. A SUCCESSFUL SPEECH. Police Constable Manuel Davies charged T. F- Hopkins, proprietor of the Ilesketh 14 11witii allowing two dogs to be at large without collars hearing the name and address of their owner. The officer Mated that the animals were suffering from mange. Inspector Tippett corroborated. Mr John Lloyd, solicitor, raised an in- teresting point. He contended that as the Order of the Board of Agriculture, under whieh tbo'proceedings were taken, bad not been proved m court, the bench ceruld not eonvict. He also contended that i-he dogli., two retrievers, were sporting dogs, and that, therefore, the defendant was exempt from the by-law. Mr Lloyd also suggested that as the County Council by-laws had only re- cently come litto.ft)t-ee the defendant ought to have the benefit, of the doubt., The Chairman said that thpy" had been a. breach of the Jaw, but in view of Mr J..lovd's speech the defendant would be only fined the nominal amount of a shilling and costs. Hopkins was then charged wiUi keeping a dog without a licence. He stat-ed that, the animal belongs! to a nephew, and WM left in his charge. He was fined 2s 0d and cost*.
